About this property
Glen Bank | Ridgestone
Summary:
Hosted by Ridgestone, Glen Bank is a beautifully restored Cumbrian longhouse blending rich history and modern luxury. Dating back to 1755, this family‑friendly retreat offers striking views of the Pennines and sits just a stone’s throw from a village pub once frequented by Oliver Cromwell. With versatile spaces, rustic charm, and upscale amenities throughout, Glen Bank is ideal for groups of friends or families seeking comfort, character, and countryside calm in equal measure.
The Space:
Ridgestone is proud to host you at Glen Bank, a beautifully restored Cumbrian longhouse dating back to 1755, carefully blending historic character with modern comfort. The ground floor is designed to welcome groups in every season, with underfloor heating, two wood-burning stoves, and a light-filled orangery featuring a large mahogany table that seats twelve. The 28-foot reception room showcases original beams, a sandstone mantel, and an old range, balanced with three comfy sofas, a smart TV, and a games cupboard, making it ideal for socialising. The farmhouse kitchen is fully equipped with an induction hob, convection double oven, microwave, Sage coffee machine, dishwasher, American-style fridge freezers, and seating for ten people overlooking the courtyard. For quieter moments, the Library is filled with books and maps, with comfortable seating, a chessboard, and access to a private courtyard.
Upstairs, five individually styled bedrooms are named after Pennine landmarks and combine elegance with flexibility. Three have en suite bathrooms, while the other two share a stylish family bathroom. The master bedroom, High Cup Nick, features double-height ceilings with exposed beams and a luxurious en suite with a bath and walk-in rain shower. On the ground floor, Great Dun offers easy access for guests with mobility needs, with glazed doors opening onto a private terrace and a generous en suite bathroom.
The gardens extend the living space outdoors with a bright central courtyard, a raised garden offering 360-degree countryside views, mature planting, and multiple dining terraces, including a Weber charcoal BBQ. For active guests, there is secure storage for up to ten bikes, while a quirky covered dog shower makes Glen Bank as practical as it is stylish. The gated drive accommodates up to five cars and includes a convenient EV charger available at cost.
Guest Access:
The property is equipped with oil-fired central heating, underfloor heating on the ground floor, two wood-burning stoves, a smart living room and sound system, a washer, a tumble dryer, and full kitchen appliances.
Ridgestone's guests have full private use of the house, landscaped gardens, terraces, and courtyards. Parking is provided for up to five cars in the gated drive, and a newly installed ultra-fast electric car charging unit is available for use, charged at cost. A BBQ is available, and we kindly ask that it is cleaned after use.
Pets are very welcome, with up to two dogs permitted. Children of all ages are also welcome. A travel cot can be provided if requested before arrival, so that it is ready for your stay.
Further features include secure bike storage for up to ten bikes, a beautifully landscaped garden with two separate outdoor dining areas, and reliable WIFI throughout the house.
WIFI is provided, but please note that internet access is offered for recreational purposes only. There are boosters in place, but speed and service may vary.
The Neighborhood:
Glen Bank is nestled in the rolling Cumbrian countryside yet remains close to Appleby‑in‑Westmorland, where you’ll find shops, eateries, and amenities. Walkers and cyclists will appreciate direct access to Pennine routes, while the village pub next door adds local charm. Browse local galleries or quiet riverside strolls or, curl up by the fire in the longhouse with room for everyone indoors and out.
Getting Around:
While the property enjoys a tranquil countryside setting, it’s well positioned for exploring the Eden Valley, Lake District, and Yorkshire Dales. For drivers, Glen Bank is easily reached from the A66 and M6.
Appleby-in-Westmorland railway station is just over 3 miles away and is served by the scenic Settle to Carlisle line, offering connections to Leeds and Carlisle. Taxis are available locally but should be booked in advance, especially during weekends and busy seasons.
If you're travelling by bus, irregular services to Appleby, Kirkby Stephen, Penrith, and surrounding villages run during the day, though services are limited - as always in rural Cumbria, we recommend checking local travel timetables in advance and pre-booking taxis where needed!
Other Things to Note:
Check-in is self-check-in with the lockbox code issued on the day of arrival.
