About this property

3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with great art and craftsman architecture.

Super close to everything, this charming, nicely furnished Craftsman house is just a 5 minute drive from exceptional restaurants and nightlife, just 5 minutes from beautiful Lake Merritt, and just 10-15 minutes from gorgeous hiking with amazing views.

The house has 3 bedrooms, each with a queen bed. It also has two bathrooms, each with a shower over a bathtub.

Lots of original art, ranging from contemporary abstract, to unusual works from Africa.

Large high definition flat panel tv.

Parking for at least two cars, one in a garage and one across the several driveways. If it's important to you to have another garage, please inquire, as this may be possible. The garage is big enough for a large car. It is not big enough for an oversized SUV, such as an Escalade. If you have such a vehicle, it will fit parked across the three driveways, parallel to the street.

One reason the house is so private is that it is set atop a hill. This means that 50 stairs are required to reach the house. I go up and down these stairs without any trouble, sometimes with heavy furniture, but those who have problems with stairs should seek another option.

Please note that there is a downstairs 1 bedroom unit that is sometimes rented out. This unit has a completely separate entrance, far from the main house's front door.

If you have pets, please let me know their weights. Charges range from $150 (under 15 pounds) to $300 per pet per month. All fur, odor and any other signs of pets must be removed by guests. Not knowing your pets, I cannot promise my vacuum etc will suffice. It is 100% guests' responsibility. Also, please note that I cannot promise that your pets can't escape the outdoor fences. Some pets are great diggers, jumpers, etc.

Great stay in Oaklan

This was a great house for us and our two boys, with everyone having their own bedroom. Very clean and well located to get to San Francisco. Garage parking is a plus. The owner was easy to communicate with and responsive.

Craftsman on the Hill

We enjoyed staying in this charming, clean, spacious house. There are big windows providing lots of natural light and the layout worked well for our family. The kitchen/eating area is large and it was convenient to have the laundry at the back of the house. The host was attentive & responded quickly to any questions we had. Garage/street parking in front of the garage is a bonus as parking can be challenging in Oakland. The house is fairly close to a freeway so it’s easy to get to Berkeley, San Francisco, Muir Woods, etc. We also enjoyed meeting the charming man who lives on the property and is transforming the hillside into a lovely, eco-friendly garden.. We hope to stay there again.

Dangerous property conditions, house is not as presented online

Large crack on front steps that increased in size during our 5 night stay. Steps appear to be separating from the house. Owner asked us to delay arrival due to flooding on the property which we did - unfortunately. Property interior as shown on website does not resemble actual furniture, which was minimal. House poorly cleaned at check in. Hair clumps in bathtub, black mold on bath mats. No extra garbage bags, no dishwasher detergent, highly diluted dish soap, difficult to find unstained pillow. Large bedroom off LR had a moldy odor. Wet items in clothes washer upon arrival, and dryer full of clothing. Inadequate towels, three wash cloths. Bedsheets smelled musty. Went to Target and bought linens for use during stay. Dried blood stain found on mattress cover. One ice cube tray, no pepper or other condiments, but did have one container of table salt with label ripped off. Police in front of house for several hours on first night there as a stolen car had been dropped off at the corner in front of house. Garage is essential, but just fit our Subaru outback. In years of using HomeAway and VRBO never had an experience to match this one.

Comfortable and beautiful!

We had a great time staying here! The rooms were all very comfortable. Two bathrooms made it easy for my friends and I to share. The living room was very spacious, we brought in an extra air mattress and it fit perfectly in the living room. Also very grateful there was extra bedding and blankets provided. The kitchen had mostly everything we needed. All the appliances worked great. There is a market store a block away, so we shopped for anything else we needed. Also a 5-10 minute drive to grocery stores like Trader Joes and Safeway. The flight of stairs did not bother us since we were all capable of handling it. It was very easy to find the house because of these stairs! The garage is definitely for a smaller car. We had a large SUV so we parked on the street. There was always parking on the street but of course late at night, you might need to park a little bit farther but not too much! Lastly, the downstairs neighbor is very friendly. He was respectful as in distance and just gave friendly waves. Thank you to EJ for being a great host. Communication was great and all the information was very helpful. Would definitely book this home again!

A wonderful stay

We couldn’t have been happier! It was the perfect space for our family of 7 to enjoy some family time before dropping off my oldest at college. Great location with easy access to the interstate. Clean property and friendly neighbors. We especially enjoyed the corner market where we could pick up some food and essentials just a block away. I would absolutely book this rental again!

Nice roomy house in a good location.

We traveled to the Bay Area to take our son back to UC Berkeley and stayed here thanksgiving week. It is a nice home with comfortable beds and an eat in kitchen that worked well for our thanksgiving meal. Because of Covid, we didn’t go out but it is close to shops and restaurants near Lake Merritt and about 10 minutes to Berkeley. There is also a Safeway and a Trader Joe’s nearby. Owner was very responsive and helpful. This is a very good deal for this area and a nice place to stay.

Very nice rental for families or small group

We enjoyed our family stay in this lovely home. with plenty of room for a family of 7 (3 generations/4 adults/3 children). This home is well laid out with a nice separation of sleeping and living/dining/kitchen areas, and a sufficiently equipped kitchen for short stays. It is easy to find, has good freeway access, and conveniently located for jaunts into San Francisco via ferry, BART, or the Bay bridge. Merritt Lake is close by where one can rent kayaks, paddle boats, row boats, or small sail boats. The home has an electronic lock system for easy access and security. Yes, as noted elsewhere, there is a bit of a climb up the stairs, but if you can handle the equivalent of 3-4 flights of stairs you will be fine. There is a major street very close by and with the windows open traffic noise may bother you if you are not use to it. We definitely would recommend this place for those who have daily outings planned, then come back to relax and enjoy quiet time in a comfortable setting. It was most convenient for us as our daughter lives 3 blocks away. Thank you, EJ.

The house was very nice. Easy to find and the lay out was great for families. The mattresses were so unbelievable comfortable!! I wanted to take one home. Only things I would suggest is towel bars in the bathrooms would have been nice.

Perfect location for family vacation

This house is perfectly located for a family get away. We sent our younger ones to zoo camp and our teenager to camp at the Cruicible for the week. My husband and I enjoyed some adult time eating at good restaurants, walking at Lake Merritt, going to the museum, doing some shopping on Piedmont street and just hanging out. There was easy access to the highway, a bus stop in the same block for days we didn’t want to drive, and quick access to e-scooters (which our teenager took advantage of) The house had plenty of room for our family of 5 and having the garage for parking was helpful. EJ is great. He even stopped by to deliver some things and make sure everything was going ok. I would recommend this property to friends.

COMFORTABLE, CLEAN, AND EASY TO GET TO. BIGGER THAN I THOUGHT FROM THE PICTURES. WELL FURNISHED, WE HAD ALL THE SUPPLIES WE NEEDED. Well deserved five-star rated charming home in convenient Oakland location

This turned out to be as described - charming home in Oakland, very conveniently located to get across the Bay to SF or up to Berkeley, over to Marin and Muir Woods, etc. Also, only 5-10 minute drive to downtown Oakland and 15-20 minute drive up to Redwood Regional park in Oakland. House is very clean. We were 3 people over six feet tall, so we appreciated the 3 queen beds (hard to find this many big beds in a vacation rental). All 3 beds were comfortable. Dog friendly (we brought our Lab). There is a little street noise at the front of the house from Park street but its a city location so to be expected. Plus, the house is set far up from the street so that helps. The stairs are not a problem if you are in reasonable shape. There is a mini market/liquor store within a 3 minute walk which was very convenient (open to 11 weeknights and midnight weekends). Great to have washer and dryer on premises in the back room as we had laundry from previous stops on our CA coast tour. If the tenant below was there, we never saw or heard him. The property manager (EJ) was very responsive and flexible. I highly recommend this property. We will book again if we head to Oakland in the future.

Great cozy place well located close to Lake Merrit

Very nice stay. Easy to find. The frontal stair/walkway is not for those out of shape, but fine for us. About 50-60 inclined combined steps and walkway. Fortunately, at night it is brilliantly illuminated. Inside, everything was comfortable, spacious and easy to negotiate. Considering its location and price, we will return especially since its less than a half mile from where our daughter lives.

Pros: House has comfortable beds and nice living room. Great freeway access and is not far from Lake Merritt Cons: There is downstairs tenant so we had to be vigilant about not making noise. Owner has expensive policies on visitors—we had wanted to have our local relatives over for lunch or dinner, but that would have triggered a $90 per day up charge. Overall, would recommend the place for a family or group that mostly plans to be off-site
