I travel extensively and rarely leave reviews for properties, let alone negative ones. In this case, I’m making a rare exception. I booked this property because it offered flexible cancellation and required full upfront payment, which is essential for my business travel. No additional taxes or charges were mentioned at booking, in the host’s confirmation, or at check‑in.
Two days into my stay—during the busiest part of my conference—the host began texting me saying he had “forgotten” to collect Milano taxes. This was never disclosed beforehand. In all my years using Expedia/Vrbo, I’ve never had a host attempt to retroactively add taxes or fees mid‑stay. It was disruptive and created unnecessary stress during an important business trip.
I ultimately agreed to split the unexpected charges simply to resolve the issue, but the host later escalated the matter and attempted to collect the full amount, making the situation even more frustrating. If fees or taxes apply, they should be disclosed at booking, upon confirmation, or at least prior to arrival—not days into a stay. The host had ample opportunity to communicate this and did not.
The property itself was fine, but the lack of upfront communication and the mid‑stay pursuit of additional taxes made this experience disappointing. I hope future guests receive clearer, timely communication.
