The perfect family get away! Short drive to Ely, and other small towns. We had a wonderful time swimming in the lake and using the kayaks, canoes, and paddle board. We did not want to leave! Definitely would come back!
What a great location! Located on the east end of the lake with a beautiful sunset view and the winds blowing in our screened in windows we got plenty of fresh air and lake views. The hospitality was top notch and the cabin was everything it needed to be. Simple accommodations but comfortable and clean. Jay and Lulu were the best hosts and daily made sure we had everything we needed!
If you are looking for a great place to unplug, relax with the sounds of the loons, this is the place for you. Our second time there and won’t be the last.
Give stats! Awesome little cabin. Great amenities. You can not beat free firewood and canoes/kayaks for guests use! Our host was kind and very welcoming. The views are idealistic and the loons were an incredible bonus! We had a chance to meet other guests and even made new friends. We'll be back next year!

The minimal accommodation conveniences of this four cabin resort encouraged me to keep it simple; savor the Northwoods, sunshine, wind, water, kayak, canoe, swim beach and awesome lake view. The Ely Blueberry Art Festival and local fish meals were a perk. Manager Jay assisted me with my kayak and was around daily checking to see that all was well. Great stay. Coming back another time.
Wonderful, peaceful location. Jay was very friendly and helpful, and the facilities were just as described on the web page. My stay was all I’d hoped for and more. I’ll be back.
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Loon Cabin. It was perfect for what we needed. The area is close to the cute town of Ely. We love that it was right on the water. The beds were very comforable and we slept very well. The communication with the property manager was great. I would highly recommend and we hope to stay there again.
My husband and I celebrated our 47 wedding anniversary on the dock of Wilderness Wind. It was a beautiful spot to have a getaway with close family. We enjoyed fishing, kayaking, seeing the loons and much more! We toured the mine in Soudan as well, and that was very fun! Would highly recommend this location to anyone looking for a cabin/woodsy/up north getaway.
We found bed bugs and if can wash the bed spread that will be great

Thank you for letting us know about your concern about bugs. We're sorry you had an issue! In the future please let us know of any concerns you find during your stay so we can address them right away. We have carefully inspected the entire cabin and found no bed bugs but nonetheless have changed the bedding to be certain of no further issues. We look forward to your next visit.
The rustic Loon Cabin was perfect for the three of us. It was easy to find. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was cute and functional. Being close to the water was extra nice to view sunsets and enjoyed the breeze. We were pleasantly surprised by the cuteness of the cabin. The bath house was very clean and well kept. The location of the cabin was about 10 miles to Ely, and about 5-10 miles to two MN State Parks. We look forward to staying here again.
We had a great time staying at Loon Cabin on Armstrong Lake. The lake is quite shallow for a long way out on the shore, which was great for swimming. Jay was a welcoming host, and the property was well maintained with lots of thoughtful amenities. Be sure to take a look around and make yourself at home. The community pavilion has all sorts of useful supplies to make your stay even more enjoyable. We'll be back!
We loved our stay in The Loon at Wilderness Wind. We were able to enjoy quiet and beautiful surroundings looking out at Lake Armstrong even on our rain day. The night sky was spectacular. There are many amenities including grill, fire ring, canoes, kayaks and paddleboat. Communication with Jay, host, was excellent and he is such a welcoming person. The cabins are rustic with no bath but bathhouse with toilet and shower were nearby. We will be back for a longer time next time.
It was absolutely amazing from the second we pulled up. Everyone was so friendly and the pictures do not do the place justice. Even with breaking my wrist, I still had an amazing time! Big perk is use of equipment is included! They provided wood, kayak, paddle boat, life jackets! Oh and we also over packed! Kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, towels, cleanings supplies.... everything! Beds have pillows and blankets, just bring sheets and cases and maybe a couple extra blankets. Again, pictures do not do this place justice. The lake is 20 feet from your front door!
Very well run. The cabin was adequate. The beds were clean and very comfortable. We used the water pump outside as the running water inside had no pressure. The bath house was a bit run down but worked fine for our purposes. The dock was in pretty good repair but could use some maintenance. We loved the fire pit by the lake and the well maintained one right by the cabin. The kitchen had everything we needed. The stove/oven worked great. There was lots of places to sit and places to hang jackets, etc. Jay came by a few times to check how things were and brought a puppy for us to play with :) It was the ideal place to spend outdoors as the weather is getting cooler esp. since we brought our 82 y.o. mom for her birthday. We'll be back.
No better place for our honeymoon!! We truly enjoyed our stay. This was our second time at Wilderness Wind and the Loon Cabin. We are planning to make WW/Loon an annual tradition!

About the host
Hosted by Owner / Property Manager
Wilderness Wind is owned and operated by Chicago Voyagers, a nonprofit that provides outdoor active experiences to urban youth that would not otherwise have access to such opportunities. Youth participate in biking, hiking, rock climbing, camping, and river and lake canoe paddling trips. Included are trips into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness that include wilderness canoeing, portaging, outdoor meal preparation, camping, navigation, and appreciation of the unique habitats of the BWCAW. Kids develop self confidence and are specifically taught leadership and teamwork skills. Your stay at our beautiful cabin helps support these programs for Chicago Voyagers kids! Thanks!
Why they chose this property
Staying at our rustic cabins offers guests a chance to experience the same flora and fauna of the Boundary Waters that the youth participants experience but with the comfort of comfortable beds, kitchens, and nearby hot showers and toilets in the bath house. Guests can paddle canoes on the lake and enjoy a campfire, hear the call of loons, enjoy sunsets over the water, and in doing so, feel a little closer to our natural world.
What makes this property unique
One of the greatest things about Wilderness Wind is the peace and quiet of the local environment. People come to Wilderness Wind to get away from the noise of the city and to be close to nature.
Rustic log cabins, secluded site, proximity to Lake Armstrong shoreline, lake access for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, proximity to BWCAW and Mesabi Trail, sunset views, naturalistic landscaping, quiet respite to connect with nature.
From a recently published book by our neighbor to the north of us, David Okerlund:
“What makes our refuge so special is its solitude. At night the sky is crystal clear, and the only sounds you may hear is the crackle of your fire, an occasional forlorn call from a loon to its mate, and an even more entrancing high pitched wail of a grey wolf. Each sound we consider to be a priceless experience”.
We agree completely with David and others who have worked hard to build a quiet community here on Lake Armstrong. We would like everyone who visits us to experience this slice of solitude too.
Therefore, we ask that you do your part to keep Wilderness Wind quiet. Don’t bring your jetski or your bass boat with 300 hp engine. A small engine on your fishing boat is of course fine. Kids should make noise (or they wouldn’t be kids!) so we’re not trying to stifle fun but we do want everyone to respect the quiet that emerges at the end of every day for all to enjoy.
