About this property
Beautiful Cottage in Rio Dulce Forest Farm
A rustic Rock and Wood Cottage built as a Guest House for family and friends, located on top of a hill with a view on the surrounding plantations and forest a refreshing breeze in the afternoons. The Cottage was built with ecological criteria and is powered by solar panels, the water provided comes from a spring in the higher part of the forest. The house is well appointed and kept very clean usually prepped for guests a day in advance we provide enough food for several breakfasts including coffe or tea, yogurt, fruits, toast and butter, orange juice, bottled drinking water and more.
Both upstairs bedrooms are equipped with matrimonial beds with their respective mosquito nets, old farm style furniture and plenty books to read. A shared bathroom with shower separates the bedrooms, each has a veranda with french windows and a view.
Downstairs large open spaces hold a kitchen with gas stove, fridge, breakfast table for four and all usual kitchen utensils, blender, french press, etc. A large set of comfy sofas surround a coffee table in the other part of the downstairs and both areas open through french doors to a corridor for hammocks with another small table and chairs to enjoy the birds in the mornings and afternoon.
A second bathroom with a shower is located below the steps in a central rock and wood structure which also forms the steps out of log wood for the second storie.
The Cottage is located on the Hacienda Tijax Farm which is only a mile away from the Rio Dulce Bridge and road to Tikal. Guests also have access to the Hacienda Tijax Hotel and Marina which has a bar, restaurant, swimming pool and all the usual amenities of a small hotel. Boat trips and information are available there for many activities available to our guests like kayak and horse tours as well as nature hikes.
A natural spring pool is only a hundred yards away to cool off on hot days and for those who enjoy hiking and bird watching the lookout tower is only a 10 minute hike from the house.
Please note that this cottage is located on the edges of a plantation and a forest reserve, it for those who love nature but are also not afraid of other creatures. It is ideal for a retreat, quiet relaxation and observation of nature. Here it the tropical jungle it often rains and there are bugs. If you are just interested in passing through and avoiding discomforts perhaps you should stay in a hotel. For those rainy days we have a back up generator and books!
There is all weather road acces up to the cottage and a place for parking, this is convenient as many of the local attractions and local stores and the market are accesible by road. You will only need to rent a boat if you go to Livingston town.

About the host
Hosted by Eugenio Gobbato

The son of Italian immigrants, born in Guatemala city and moved to the Rio Dulce over 30 years ago during midlife crisis.. have survied and flourished here in the very humid tropical forest since then. I own a small eco hotel on the shore of the Rio Dulce and also a small rubber plantation on the hills behind. Spend my days lookig after the forest, the rubber trees and of late some cows and a cacao platation on another property.
Enjoy very much what I do and staying in touch with nature and the elements.

Why they chose this property
Well it´s a long and convoluted story.. but as a young boy I always enjoyed trees and my friends farms with their horses and cows and so on.. however my family was mostly dedicated to commerce and light industry.. however I did not wanto to do that.. At age 39 I was able to sell my assets in the city. While vacationiing here I ran into an old friend that had property here on the Rio and chatting one thing led to another, I told him I was on an extended vacation but looking for some land to settle in he said he would sell me of his property.. the next day we walked to the top of the hill and when I saw the view I thought this is it. So I´ve been here since.. more property has been added, hotels and homes built, walkways and hanging bridges, and a few years ago this cottage. My daughters grandkinds and son stay there when they visit. Why? well I have nothing else to do.
However I must say that the main reason for me being here is that I still enjoy enormously the forest and trees, the chatter of the parrots in the late afternoon the moonrises and sunsets over the jusgle and that is why I kept a good size chunk of forest as a natures reserve with trails and everything.. the Hotel is an excuse for a good cup of coffee and some social life if ever I feel the need.. Often we are visited from friends and relatives and the palce has become iconic of the Rio Dulce area as the first real ecolodge..
