About this property

Cozy cabin near lakes, streams, rivers, hiking trails and shops/restaurants

Located just three miles from the Big Trees State Park, our cozy family cabin offers internet and wi-fi as well as cable access for a 50" HD TV in the living room. With two bedrooms featuring queen beds, closets and storage space as well as a loft with two single beds, 1.5 baths and a fully furnished kitchen and eating area, the Ward cabin can comfortably sleep up to 6. The area around the cabin features crystal clear lakes, rivers and streams for fishing and swimming.

The internet tests at 200 mbps. There is battery back-up provides safety for power outages. I use the kitchen table for remote work.

We often stop for dinner at the Lube Room, just .9 miles from the cabin. This local favorite pub/restaurant, features draft beer, live folk music and a variety of games.

The Calaveras Big Trees State Park is three mile from the cabin in the other direction towards Arnold, CA. In the summer, the area parks offer swimming and trout fishing in the majestic streams and rivers that curve through the forests of tremendous great Pines, Sequoias and Redwoods that have made the area famous.

If catching a blue gill off the dock with your youngest is what you are looking for, there is the White Pines Lake near the center of Arnold, as well as small ponds throughout the area.

Great weekend stay in a very nice, clean, cabin

We had a great 3-day weekend vacation at this cabin. It’s located nicely between Arnold and Bear Valley making going to eat in Arnold, and play at Bear Valley Adventure park a breeze. The cabin was clean and had everything you’d want in a vacation rental. From a hair dryer to heated blankets the owners, who were seemed very nice from their communication with us, have thiught of everything. We WILL be staying here again next year for sure!

Sam’s cabin

Recently, we stayed at Sam’s cabin for the second time. We got there before the storm hit the area so having a fire place inside was a plus and made our stay very pleasant. It was a great experience not only because the cabin was cozy and welcoming but also it snowed a lot and the entire family had a opportunity to be creative outside whether to build a snowman or have a snowball fight as well as walking around the quiet neighborhood. We’ll recommend the cabin,it is equipped with the necessities, easy to access also communication with the owner is smooth and easy,so we’ll plan to come back.

Awesome Place and Host

Sam is an awesome host. He responds pretty quick and accommodating. For a first timer vacationing in a cabin, we had very good experience. The location is convenient and near hiking areas etc. When we got to the place, we thought that the previous renters left their food, realizing later they are food stocked for guests like us. That’s a plus! We had all we need. My family wanted to stay more days unfortunately it’s already booked for the next days but we will definitely go back. The house is warm and cozy. Thanks again Sam!

First Cabin Rental Ever!!!!

I booked 3 nights at Sam's cabin with my wife and 3 kids for our summer vacation. Before we went I texted Sam to see if the property had AC or a Bbq grill outside as the listing does not state if it has either. Unfortunately, Sam never replied my text so I ended up taking a fan an my own bbq grill which I did not end up using since there was a Bbq grill outside and the cabin has plenty of portable fans including one main one on the top floor. I did notice Sam is trying to control rotten by placing poison outside the cabin. Out of the three nights I only heard a rotten once at night on the bottom bedroom and it also seemed like one died inside the sink because every time we would run water we could smell the stench. Overall our experience was okay in my books since I cant compare with other cabins due to been our first time renting one.

Get what you pay for.

This is a cozy little cabin that needs some new amenities and furniture. The furniture is broken down and very uncomfortable. Light bulbs in the living room are burned out, bed sheets have holes in them. All the utensils in the kitchen are very old as well as pots and pans. The owner really needs to spend a little money on the place to make it worth the stay. Unless some upgrades are made will will not be returning.

We had a wonderful experience. Sam made sure every need was met. We definitely plan to return

We enjoyed a much needed respite from our day to day lives. The ability to make day trips to the local fishing holes, hiking spots, and Big Trees was an added bonus for us. Our teenage boys had so much fun and the cabin was just what our family of four needed for our trip. The grocery store was close enough for us if we needed something for our meals. We highly recommend this property if you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area.

Cozy cabin in the woods

Our family (2 adults and 2 kids) loved staying here. Perfect size for a family of 4-6. Clean and full kitchen. Lovely forested area in Dorrington. We mostly ate in and then skied at Bear Valley. About a 30 min drive to the slopes.

Cabin is cozy, warm & welcoming. Awesome location!

The Ward cabin was cozy and welcoming. My family and I had a very relaxing stay amongst the beautiful trees and snow. We had trouble with the coffee maker. It was covered in old coffee grinds. We lost power due to the storm so we could not cook on the electric stove top but we made the best of it and warmed up with the wood stove.

Snow vacation

It was nice, beautiful view of the outdoors. Didn’t need to drive to far up for snow. Only the downstairs tv worked. And some lights weren’t working. Other than those minor things everything was great. Looking forward to our next trip

About the host

Host profile image
I was introduced to Calaveras County by my wife. We met in Tokyo, but she was raised in Modesto. As a girl she had enjoyed swimming and hiking in the area during summers with her family and skiing at nearby Bear Valley in the winter.

Why they chose this property

My wife's father bought the cabin a few decades ago. He was the ultimate ourdoorsman and the cabin was a favorite place for him and the family to get away and relax. Close to magnificent rivers, streams and lakes, as well as blue gill ponds, there were always things to do. Murphy's always provided a convenient stop on the way to and from the family home in Modesto. And Bear Valley offered great skiing at a very reasonable price. As the kids got older, the Lube Room became a regular stop during every vacation. The burgers and sandwiches were(are) well priced. The draft beer, cold and the unique atmosphere always added a special flair to the night. The cabin became the backdrop for years of memories. Now, our children drive out from San Francisco to use the cabin 4-5 times a year for all for the same reasons-- and an occasional mountain bike trip. It is a pleasure to share the site of so many of memories with our guests. We hope you enjoy your time at our cabin. Thank you for being our guests.

What makes this property unique

It is cozy and convenient. Located close enough to Arnold to easily get provisions, it is also just 25 miles of open highway up to the Bear Valley Ski Resort.
The main entrance to the Big Trees State Park is just three miles towards Arnold. The park ranger at the entrance can help you find a variety of trails for hiking and snow shoeing, or give you a map to the park's crystal clear rivers and streams.
If it is not your day to hit the outdoors, you can stoke up the wood stove for a relaxing day in the cabin. The cut wood for the stove is conveniently nearby. You can spend your day enjoying your favorite programs on the 50" flat screen tv: accessing the internet via WiFi: or just reading the afternoon away.

During the summer, spring and fall, the deck (with table and chairs) provides a great place to read and relax or enjoy a meal. Semi-shaded, there is usually enough breeze to make it always comfortable. There is a small grill locked away that we can bring out if our guests want to barbeque on the property. But, many seem to prefer to use the built in grills nestled among the big pines located near Beaver Creek.
