About this property
2 Bedrooms / 2 Bath Oceanfront Cliff House On Hamakua Coast
The unique and extraordinary Cliff House of Laupahohoe is a perfect retreat for someone who wants the 'real Hawaii' experience and to get away from it all. The Pacific Ocean is your constant companion from almost every room in the house. The property excels in location and views!
We are located along the Hamakua coast at Laupahoehoe point, where 300 foot sea cliffs surround a peninsula on both sides. Here, the crashing windward waves of the Pacific Ocean carve rugged pinnacles into the coastline, greatly displaying the never-ending conflict between the land and the sea.
From the heights of the home you'll see whales in the winter months. Entertain from the kitchen with a span of windows that gives you the feeling of being at the prow of a ship. The sea breeze and sun shades keep the suite cool on days with miles of ocean surrounding you
The Hamakua Coast is one of the Hawaiian Islands most scenic and unpopulated coastlines. It stretches for 80 miles of exceptional agricultural lands with gulches, waterfalls and abundant flora. A Pacific island paradise awaits you.

We were there Jan14-17 2026. It’s an older home tucked into a quiet neighborhood about 25 miles north of Hilo—so it’s a bit remote if that matters to you. We loved the location and neighborhood. As someone else mentioned, the interior has a cozy “Maine cabin” feel, but it’s nice and clean, with amenities as advertised. The deck is huge and very comfortable, with an amazing view over the North Pacific! The owners are great—very communicative and helpful. We left the doors open and screens closed all the time; it does not have AC, but it’s not needed, as the ocean breezes keep it cool day and night. We had no bugs. Enjoyed oranges from the tree on the grounds and had a nice visit with the neighbor/caretaker Lin when she stopped by with just-picked fresh fruit.
This is our second time staying at this property. It’s comfortable with a fabulous view. It’s the perfect spot for exploring this side of the island. It’s in a very central location in a quiet neighborhood. Owners are communicative Highly recommend this property!

The property was not only gorgeous but was filled with all the amenities you want for a restful vacation.
The property caretaker lives across the street - she is a definite asset being very friendly and helpful.

Liked: Cleanliness, location, listing accuracy
This rustic house feels kind of like a Maine cabin, but with a much more dramatic view. It sits up high on a sloping cliff above a surf-pounded little paint of volcanic point way down below. That point of land is a little park, much more suitable for appreciating the forces of nature than beach relaxation. The muffled roar of the ocean way down below was quite relaxing, and we were visited by colorful little geckos and even what I believe may have been a pair of Hawai'ian hawks. We used the house as a base for visiting Hilo, Akaka Falls and Rainbow falls. We also launched from here to visit Hawi and Kohala. The big selling point of this house is the lanai overlooking the vast ocean. Just sorry we did not get to enjoy it much. Thank you to our hosts for sharing their vacation home with us. It was a memorable part of our 10-night trip to the Big Island.
The property was exactly as advertised. The wrap around deck (perfect for dining or just relaxing) and view were our favorites. This property makes a good base to explore the rest of the island. The nights bring a beautiful ocean breeze. The house is situated so that there is plenty of privacy and the surrounding gardens are beautiful. The host accommodated our late arrival with food and drinks to get us through to the next morning. This was a pleasant experience and I would recommend this property.
Chow and Tom's place is truly incredible. When we arrived their neighbor was there to greet us with fresh fruit and vegetables from the property. They truly make everything feel like your home. The pictures of the Lanai don't fully capture the beauty and ambiance. Watching and hearing the sounds of waves crashing on Laupāhoehoe Point, viewing the whale migration and relaxing in the morning and evening here really made our visit! Thanks, Chow and Tom!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is a beautiful home in a local area and you really feel the history around you. The fresh fruit from the yard was a beautiful surprise and we incorporated pieces in every meal we cooked. Now, for my favorite part- my husband and I frequent new places and never stay in hotels, we like to blend in, cook new foods from local farmers everywhere we go. Tom and Chow have a fully functioning kitchen! My husband and I have had to get very creative in some rentals because there just was not enough pots, pans, utensils, etc to make a gourmet meal. They even had some kitchen convenience items that surprised me to find. I understand but everyone who vacations wants to cook, but it's worth mentioning how pleasant it was to have everything we could have wanted. Feedback on the rest of the home: yard - beautiful, fragrant, and beautifully landscape but natural looking very balanced; Beds- comfortable and the ocean breeze flowing through the airy curtains was superb; Cleanliness- very clean and tidy; Communication- very responsive to questions concerns or just curiosity. All over a magical stay!

unexpected
We only stayed one night out of the two nights we reserved. Although the view from the back deck was beautiful since the front door could not be locked we didn't comfortable staying. Only one bedroom could be used due to the light mechanism not function in ceiling fan. Pool was listed as an amenity but no pool existed. I brought this up to the owners and they have since had this removed from their listing. The owners were very helpful while we were in contact and gave us a lot of information about the surrounding area.
It was so great to stay in my old home again. I was born and raised there so it was lovely to see that amazing view again. The work Chow and Tom have done on it is exceptional - that deck! Wow! The beds are super comfy and the kitchen is stocked with just enough things for a family of 4 to be comfortable. The property is stunning - Lynn, the caretaker, has done an incredible job with all the plants, it's like a botanical garden! She stopped by a few times and it was nice to chat with her.Sitting on the deck to watch the rains come and go is so soothing. Even if the weather is not ideal it is still glorious to sit in the hammock and relax. It really is a small home but doesn't matter since you'll spend all your time either exploring the island or relaxing on the deck. There was some initial confusion with the dates we reserved that caused some alarms (my sister in law had the same issue a few years before and had to switch her reserved dates). Other than that, it was a great experience!
Location in Laupahoehoe was ideal for us because we were visiting friends in Laupahoehoe, Hilo, and Waimea. Indoor lighting in back bedroom and living room were insufficient for reading a book. Bedroom needed a light bulb replaced and the local man who was supposed to do maintenance wasn't skilled enough to get the globe off of the ceiling fan to get out the bulb. Washer dryer out in the carport were large and worked fine after we figured the buttons out. House instructions were outdated, not reflecting more recent changes, and there were none for the appliances. The owners are in Kona and dont make it over often. They were friendly and responsive, but their dependence on the neighbor couple to do things wasn't ideal.
All this being said, I might stay there again since it's one of the few vacation rentals in Laupahoehoe.

We were not expected
The property owners thought for some reason that we had cancelled our reservation which we had not. The owner made arrangements for a different place for us and compensated for the inconvenience. Very kind. We were disappointed not to stay there but enjoyed the replacement accommodation.
My husband and I rented this property for our honeymoon. We rented a car and it was in a perfect location. It’s tucked away in a beautiful area with no noise besides nature and the ocean. We spent our mornings exploring Hilo or the other side of the island and our afternoons reading and relaxing on the porch. We kept saying how unreal everything felt because of its beauty, it really took our breath away. We woke up with the sunrise every morning and enjoyed some of the fruit from the trees.
Chow and Tom were great hosts. Very friendly and communicative. If we ever get the opportunity to go to Hawaii again we will be choosing this property.
The outdoor space of this property is amazing, with incredible ocean views. The house was very clean and the kitchen functional. The bedrooms were quite small. One of the bathrooms is very small. The hosts were welcoming and take pride in their property.
This is a 5-star destination if what you're looking for is some peace and quiet to unwind in. The house is immaculate, the view fantastic and the soundtrack is nothing but wind, waves and birdsong (okay, proabably frog and lizard song, too).
Lounge on the awsome deck, maybe take a scenic drive along the coast (or not; the deck is really great), forget that things like traffic jams and e-mail exist. But only if you want too; the WiFi is surprisingly zippy (~300 Mb/s down).
The hosts, Tom and Chow were considerate and attentive and the housekeeper, Lynn is a friendly treasure trove of local information.
You really can't go wrong here if you just want to get away from it all for a while. Worth every penny and then some.
Chow & Tom were the most gracious hosts we've ever encounter. They were helpful before, during and even after we left. The house sits perfectly on the cliff. Waking up to the sound of the ocean and roosters sets the stage every day. The house was well equipped with everything. It was as if we were home. The location and everything were just perfect. Thank you chow & Tom. Hope to see you soon.
We really enjoyed our time at this property, the interior is nicely furnished and decorated, beds are comfortable, kitchen has everything you need for your stay and there’s a nice Weber grill on the side patio. The highlight of the property though is the fabulous deck! The view is beautiful overlooking the rugged coastline below and the space has multiple lounging areas including a daybed, couches and outdoor eating table. We ate breakfast every morning at the table after picking fresh tangerines off the tree in the garden. The home’s gardens are stunning and home to colorful geckos and frogs that sing at night. Chow and Tom were super helpful with suggestions for our trip and gave us some great ideas for scenic drives, beaches, restaurants etc.. The home although about 25 min from Hilo is located in a good location for exploring that whole side of the island. If you’re looking for a home base to explore the volcano, Hilo, and the Weimea area this is a great option. We had a fabulous stay and I highly recommend!
