About the host
Hosted by Louise Cardoza
I'm a native of Opelika, Al and my husband and I have owned this property for 15 years in hopes of providing a place for family and friends to be together and enjoy. After a lifetime of travel and raising our 3 adult children, we decided to share our beautiful farm with others. We spent 10 years carefully piecing the old “poor farm” back together while getting the opportunity to be creative and expressive in inside decor and outside beautification. Having worked in the music business most of our lives, we enjoy the pianos and musical instruments placed around the Farmhouse rooms and cottages. We definitely keep the music alive! We have been hosting now for 6 years and have met the nicest guests who return year after year. It’s the friends we have met who come and stay awhile or just passing through who have made this adventure so wonderful and fulfilling for us. We look forward to hearing your story and all about your experiences! Come on down!
Why they chose this property
This property is a very special one indeed. It use to be a poor farm back in the day and housed many people who were not able to pay their taxes, so they came here, to the county “poor farm” and worked off their tax debt. The 10-15 minute journey along a winding road, you will enjoy farm after farm as your stress level lowers. Its peaceful vibe as you enter Oak Bowery is evident and the property reflects a yesteryear lifestyle with its rural charm and carefully preserved ambiance. The gated property has original buildings, structures and houses on it screaming its history. There are many preserved trails and beautiful places to walk We have turned it into a wonderland of historic beauty and fun. We care for goats, horses and chickens. All of our animals are sweet and love being loved. Our mission was to save all of the buildings on the property and we have successfully done that.
What makes this property unique
The feeling I get when I am here is unlike any other place in the world. Aside from the heartbeat that this property has, and all the history it holds close and being a past, but not forgotten poor Farm, there are many birds, wildlife and our own domestic animals that we share our 32 acres with. We find that here, we spend the majority of the time outside enjoying nature and love the peacefulness here. You’ll find that every structure on the property is preserved beautifully on the outside and is surprisingly modern and comfortable on the inside. The perfect combination for a perfect stay.
