About this property
Heart of Hillsdale, Kitchen, Wifi, Desk, Apartment with 2 Beds Close to College
Guests enjoy the downtown location, and close proximity to Hillsdale College. Everything is within walking distance!
Apartment 21 is at the top of the stairs of a Historic Victorian Building Built Circa 1854. It is next to the laundry room , which guests have access to.
Bought in 2006 by new owners, the building is constantly being repaired but with the goal of preserving its Historic character. Every effort is being made to save, and in some cases recreate or restore, its unique features such as antique hardwood floors, original woodwork and moldings. Also has a full kitchen, bath, & living room. It is completely private!!
Apartment 21 is located in the main part of the house, upstairs, on the second floor.
It has a kitchen which includes range, refrigerator, microwave and Keurig coffee maker, pots and pans, dishes, silverware, just like home! If you don't feel like going out to eat, you don't have to! The bedroom is cozy, perfect for two, with a 1920's metal bed in the bedroom , and a handcrafted wood twin sized daybed in the living room.
The bathroom is finished and complete with a nice sized shower, sink, toilet and tile floor. The living room of the apartment is a great place to relax. It boasts an oversized daybed, loaded with pillows, very comfortable and a 43" TV with Roku. In one corner a desk and comfortable chair are perfect for catching up on office tasks or homework. Across the room, sits an old gliding rocker, also very comfortable. A bay window looks down on the street and nearby buildings and lets in the sunlight during the day. At bedtime, pillows are removed from the daybed and it becomes an extra bed for a third person, adult or child.
It is a self check in, keyless entry (room code is sent the night before check in). Check in is typically anytime after 4pm, and check out is by 11am. Owner Nancy and her assistant Rebekah both live nearby and can be reached via phone call or text if you need anything. You will find each of our team members (housekeeping included), whether it be in person or via phone, to be friendly and caring.
Built before the Civil war, this apartment house is almost 200 years old. As such, it has all of the charm, and quirks, that old houses bring.
The Heart of Hillsdale, Circa 1854, was the home & offices of Merton Fitzpatrick, a prominent Hillsdale lawwyer and one of the founders of the original Republican Party.
Built before the Civil War and at the beginning of the Victorian Era, the house has features of both, the simple boxy lines of a Pre Civil War Building and some Victorian flourishes.
After the Great Depression In the 1930's the building was converted to an 8 unit apartment building for lower income families..
Today 6 of the 8 apartments serve as a Comfortable, Reasonable and Convenient short term place to stay for Hillsdale Visitors. The two remaining apartments are leased to long term tenants who understand and love old houses.
Across the street from city hall, post office, fire and police, 1/2 a block west are the town shops & eateries. 1/2 a block south, take a walk in lovely Stocks Park.
The bike path is 100 feet from your comfy, complete apt. Sleeps 1-3. Could sleep 4 if you bring a cot or inflatable mattress.
The community laundry room is on the second floor. Laundry hours are 7:30am to 10 pm. Please contact Nancy's assistant Rebekah for Laundry room keycode and instructions. Phone numbers are provided upon booking.
A 4 yard trash receptacle is provided in parking lot for your convenience.
The 16 step stairway in the center of the building may be an issue for some adults and young children who should always be supervised on the stairs.

About the host
Hosted by Nancy

About Owner Nancy: I am an artist, love old houses, interested in antiques, art, current events, politics. I am also an entrepreneur, and have had a number of small businesses. I love animals, rehabbing old houses, reading, working. I am actually a senior citizen, but feel like a 13 year old and relate very well to younger people. Lots of things left in life that I want to do and experience and learn. Favorite Food lately: my own cabbage soup! Favorite Music: Flamenco Guitar, Life motto: Feel the fear and do it anyway.
Nancy has furnished the rooms of our old 1800's house with antiques she finds on her "treasure hunts". You will notice interesting and eclectic gallery walls that she has put together in each apartment, as well as her mosaic tile artistry in the kitchens, some dining table, end tables and mirrors (depending on apartment).
Nancy's assistant Rebekah (Bekah) does most of the customer relations work, reservations, and tech stuff for Nancy. She has worked with Nancy to help with the business since 2019. She will most likely be the one communicating with you here, via phone, and occasionally in person. Rebekah is also an artist, selling her art both online and in Hillsdale, as well as owner of a small local bakery business. She also enjoys old houses, antiques, estate sales, singing and playing guitar, animals, writing (especially poetry) , nature, knitting, pretty much anything arts and culture related. She is a board member of our local Historical Society and also does volunteer work looking after and teaching children (both art and historical living) in her spare time.

Why they chose this property
I bought this property in 2006. It was in rough shape, needed lots of repairs but I loved the look of it and the location, "The Heart of Hillsdale." I visualized it as my source of income after retirement and a "fun" project so I used all my savings to purchase and start repairing the property.
Many folks in town thought I was crazy to tackle a such big project that would eventually consume most of my time and income. When I learned about the history of the property I became even more determined to save the house and eventually share it with visitors.
The house has become a never ending Work in Progress. I see a need for improvement or repair, try to save up the money needed and eventually do it. Most visitors understand and appreciate the effort I put in to save this old house.
