About this property
Historic Oldenburg Drees Haus
Drees Haus is a charming home on the historic district walking tour of Oldenburg, a German-Catholic village in southeastern Indiana. Located on a quiet street with ample street parking, this brick cottage home, built in 1870, is an example of the town's late 19th century architectural style. Easy walking distance to restaurants, shops, grocery store, and the Catholic church. On the ground floor the living room, kitchen, and bedroom have high ceilings, comfortable furniture, and shuttered windows for privacy. The kitchen is well stocked with a coffeemaker, tea, coffee, condiments, and staples. Enjoy the view of the garden from the kitchen, or take your coffee out to the covered patio, enhanced by the lighting and ceiling fans. A smart TV in the living room, Bluetooth, fiber-optic internet, and WiFi keep you connected. (Note: While Oldenburg generally has excellent cell coverage, ATT and T-Mobile phones are not supported.) The queen bed has, we're told, the most comfortable mattress ever. The full bathroom features a walk-in shower. Climbing the stairs to the second floor will reward you with a cozy sitting room with games and puzzles, and a bedroom with full bed. The space is heated and cooled with a mini-split There's also a freestanding electric fireplace to add to the ambiance in the winter. Relax outside on the covered patio, equipped with ceiling fans and lighting. Enjoy playing with your kids at the adjacent town park, or walk one or two blocks to restaurants, pubs, grocery, historic Sisters of St Francis convent, Holy Family church, antiques and walking trails. Guests have access to the entire house with the exception of the unfinished basement. This includes two bedrooms, a full bath with walk-in shower, kitchen, living room and sitting room. A small porch off the kitchen overlooks the garden and the neighboring park. Because VRBO does not have a maximum stay limit, and doesn't automatically charge tax for stays longer than 28 days, we no longer offer a length-of-stay discount for instant book. Please message us for details on weekly and monthly discounts. Note that the house is not handicap accessible. There is an exterior stairway off the kitchen and two steps on the front stoop.

The home was so amazing and the host even better. Loved that this is next to a park with many places to walk to in town. If you need anything just ask the host she is wonderful!
Ruthie was wonderful and very quick to respond. The house was so cute and decorated very lovely. She even had a beautiful Christmas tree up. It was very very clean. I would definitely recommend it, and would stay here again
cute brick colonial in a quaint little German town; nice neighborhood; easy access to Batesville and shopping; host was great; had more than everything we needed
An absolutely lovely little property and the communication was clear, concise, and simple. We'll be staying here again when visiting family 🙂 thank you!
The house is so cute. Stayed over the weekend and it was so peaceful. Such beautiful architecture everywhere you look. Wish we had stayed longer so we could explore the area.
Would definitely stay again.
My wife and I stayed at the Drees Haus for a weekend getaway. This was our second stay at this property and we will return. The house is cozy and well provisioned. The town is quaint and cute.
We enjoyed our stay in this comfortable little house with an "old-world" feel, fronting on a quiet side street within easy walking distance of the available shops and dining options.
This is our 3rd straight year to stay here. We love this place, it’s quiet, Ruthie is great to work with and her place is just right for us. The little town of Oldenburg is quiet and has a neat little pub with the best breaded tenderloin sandwiches. I would highly recommend this VRBO for your stay.
We had a nice relaxing weekend. Great little house! We loved the history of the town and the house. House was great and close to shops and restaurants.
Check in was super easy. The house was clean and had nice historical touches throughout. I loved drinking coffee on the patio each morning—very peaceful. I would stay again!
We so enjoyed our trip and stay. The house was charming, convenient and very well kept. The host, Ruthie, was very responsive and friendly. We will be back :)
The house was perfect. The yard was beautifully landscaped and well taken care of. We enjoyed playing cards and sharing a bottle of wine on the covered patio. Oldenburg was a very clean and safe town. You can tell people take pride in their homes and community. We will definitely return.

About the host
Hosted by Ruthie
My husband David and I moved to the area in the 1970's, and have long been enchanted by the village of Oldenburg and the Drees Haus in particular. The house sold privately two or three times, and we were able to buy it in 2016 only because we happened to know the owners at that time. We spent the next two years updating and furnishing it. David and I have spent years collecting antiques, so we had great fun furnishing the house with several period pieces of furniture and local artwork.
Why they chose this property
The atmosphere; unique furnishings and artwork, comfort and coziness. A 1870's house renovated in 2017-2018. The history, on the walking tour of the historic district. The location, on a quiet street but close to everything Oldenburg has to offer. Adjacent to a lovely, well-maintained village park/playground, directly across the street from the serene Catholic convent , a block from shops and restaurants. 1/2 block to the historic Catholic church.
What makes this property unique
The house retains its old-world charm, while at the same time including a double-reclining couch, leather recliner, and comfortable bedding. We acquired much of the artwork and furnishings in Oldenburg, often at auctions at the convent of the Sisters of St Francis. Information about the furnishings is provided in the house manual. The backyard garden is lovely, and the proximity to the village playground is an added bonus.
