Robertson's Cottages Door County Waterfront Resort Sportsman's Home Dog Friendly
Robertson’s Cottages are nestled on a slender, tree-laden peninsula called Idlewild. Off the beaten path, at the end of a quiet dead-end road, our family has welcomed guests since the 1930s. We genuinely appreciate your interest in staying in one of our seven individual and unique cottages filled with the modest comforts and serenity a body, mind and spirit needs. ↟↟↟
Capped with a radiant red metal roof and quaint matching shutters, this listing is for a homey, vintage dwelling named Sportsmen's Cottage. In Sportsmen's you will find a living room centered around a hearty wood burning stove, one bathroom with an antique claw foot bathtub and shower, two bedrooms...both in which queen beds are nestled, a completely furnished and sunny yellow kitchen, and a variety of time-honored hunting and fishing embellishments charmingly adorning each and every wall. On the south side of the living room an original glass door opens up into a bright and cozy three season porch. On one end of the porch you will find an antique dining table which doubles as a perfect puzzle putting together location, or a cordial checkers or cribbage tournament arena. On the other end a twin bunk bed sits...emanating nostalgic summer camp vibes and is ideal for whippersnappers and grown-ups alike! ↟↟↟
Guests of Robertson’s Cottages have access to our spacious permanent pier (8ft x 120ft), protected moorings with finger piers, boat slips, a canoe, row boats, two paddle boards, life jackets, communal fire pit, laundry room, library, sauna, play structure with two swings and a slide, picnic tables, tether ball, safe sandy beach, swim raft, charcoal grills and free, turtle's pace, wavering wireless internet (realistically, you may not be able to binge watch your favorite series on Netflix or participate in online gaming while staying at Robertson’s, BUT you should be able to check emails and post your Door County sunset photo on social media!). ↟↟↟
Idlewild is located at the juncture of the waters of Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay and Sawyer Harbor. The rejuvenating scent of the forest, the pristine waters and the closeness with nature makes it easy to take a break from the cares you left behind. Directly across the harbor from Robertson’s you will see the steep, densely wooded bluff of Potawatomi State Park. The 1,225 acre sanctuary is perfect for bicycling, bird watching, hiking, observing native Door County flora and fauna, picking wild berries in season and picnicking. The park is open year round from 6am-11pm.
As nature changes the landscape in the spring, the woods become blanketed with white trillium. Life unearths gradually and proceeds swiftly this time of year in Idlewild. Nearby apple and cherry orchards bloom in late May and walleye fishermen quietly troll the harbor every night. With over 200ft of shoreline, a historical and spacious permanent pier (8ft x 120ft), and protected moorings with finger piers and boat slips, Robertson’s is a gem of a place for boat, fishing and nature lovers alike.
In autumn, the view across the protected water of Sawyer Harbor is spectacular. One can observe the slowly changing panorama of colors and feel the refreshingly crisp fall air settle deeply in your lungs. The fresh, sun-warmed days and water-cooled nights are sure to make you feel stronger in body and soul.
If activity is what you enjoy, there is a challenging eighteen hole golf course located at the entrance to Idlewild. You may also have interest in a day trip to the more populated areas of the county where you may indulge in village shopping, delight in local festivals, or flavor locally crafted beer or wine at one of the various craft breweries and wineries. One of our personal favorite activities, perfect for any age, is embarking on an afternoon adventure up the peninsula for a picnic and evening musical at Northern Sky Theater located in Peninsula State Park. Their incredible outdoor venue and all original productions are sure to fill your hearts with joy and wonder.
Whether you are bicycling the winding, wooded, back country roads, taking an invigorating morning meander or cozy sundown voyage by boat to nearby historic Sherwood Point Lighthouse, or are curled up with a favorite book on the dock or in front of the fireplace, the closeness with nature and time spent with your closest loved ones at Robertson’s Cottages at Idlewild will leave a genuine and lasting impression in your hearts.
As you mentally prepare for a stay at Robertson’s, taking a moment to visualize this experience as ‘camping’ in conjunction with the MODEST amenities of a charcoal grill, coffee maker, refrigerator, stove and oven, cookware, tableware, microwave, mattress, pillows, extra blankets, a VERY small television and DVD player, flush toilets, warm showers, walls and a roof over your head, we feel you will have a memorable experience. If you’re looking for a refined, air conditioned, materially pristine and virtually bugless place to vacation, we fully honor that desire and sincerely support your decision to choose accommodations with one of the many facilities available in Sturgeon Bay.
We feel a stay at Robertson’s Cottages truly all comes back to those looking to reconnect to a simpler time, a time before all things instant and wireless...an uninterrupted, slower time, deeply rooted in all things natural and nostalgic.

Not worth the price you pay. Lack of communication. Filthy, no way I was getting in that shower. Very run down, if it was clean might not of been to bad. Had wifi but no password no keys to lock up. Couldnt use one bed, floor was so uneven you would of rolled out. I was so happy I had to bring my own bedding or I definitely would of found some other place to stay. It was pet friendly and that was what I was looking for.
Stayed at the Sportsman Cabin. True to it's name. Reminded me of cabins my family stayed in in the 70's. Quaint. Near the water. great location for fishing, not so much for shopping. Nice area though!
Rustic cottage with comfortable beds and basic accommodations. Absolutely stunning property, very quiet and tranquil. If you’re looking for posh and upscale, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for rustic, nature, and tranquil, this is the place. Property owner was responsive and easy to work with. Quiet surroundings were amazing.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 days at the Robertson’s cottages. We were immediately welcomed by Rebecca. Our family of 4 and our 2 dogs were made to feel right at home. The description of the property was very accurate — Cute cabin located feet from a little beach next to the common space so everyone could hang out. Kids ages 9 and 12 enjoyed the rowboat, paddle boards, and tetherball. Rustic dock worked great for early morning fishing trips.

Cleanliness is our top priority here at Robertson’s Cottages. We intentionally and happily go above and beyond to accommodate all of our guests. Upon your arrival we checked in with you and handed you a card with our personal contact information. We do this with every guest in case anything should arise during a visit. Your family and dogs stayed the entire duration of your scheduled visit, and not once did you communicate or bring anything to our attention.
In Robertson’s Cottages 83 years of operation there has not been a single bed bug incident. After every guest’s visit each cottage is thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Every bed is pulled away from the walls, and the entire bed area is cleaned. Every bed has a vinyl mattress protector that is changed regularly. After your stay and claim we checked the walls around each bed, the floors, the bed frames, the box springs, and the mattress protectors. There was not a single shred of evidence indicating there may be a bed bug issue. We would hope and assume that if there was a bed bug problem in your cottage that you would have immediate brought it to our attention and at the very least requested different accommodations. We did not hear from you until hours after your scheduled departure at which time you called, verbally assaulted us, and threatened to write a negative review. This particular cottage has been occupied for 12 nights following your stay, and there has not been a single complaint or any indication of a possible bed bug issue.
During your call to us after your visit we acknowledged that we made a mistake by not realizing there was a dirty blanket in the closet. We mistakenly failed to notice this as as we have requested that every guest (since 2020) bring their own bedding in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19, and for that we sincerely apologized and issued you a refund.
Our intention is to be as transparent and realistic as possible in the description of the cottage. We wholeheartedly realize and accept that a stay with us in the Idlewild Woods is not for everyone.

Weekend getaway
Beautiful location and surroundings. Cottage is rustic, a little rough in condition. Not pleased with the bugs inside, dead and alive, and condition of the cottage; very musty, hole in the ceiling with bugs coming in and out, spiders and webs all over, ripped and stained furniture and bed coverings, toilet lifts when sat on… Cleaned and sprayed for bugs upon arrival and slept with one eye open.

I would strongly advise against booking this cottage. From the moment we arrived, it was clear the property had not been properly cleaned or maintained in a very long time. The cottage was full of spiderwebs and bugs — not just in the corners, but even inside the lampshades. The TV remotes were sticky and grimy to the touch, making it clear that basic cleaning had been ignored. To make matters worse, there were holes in the windows that allowed more insects to get inside. The bathroom was old, dirty, and in desperate need of renovation, adding to the overall feeling of neglect.Instead of feeling cozy or relaxing, the entire place felt unhygienic and uncomfortable. For the price we paid, this experience was completely unacceptable. This property should not be rented out in its current condition.Save yourself the frustration and look elsewhere

Nonsense regarding the cottage not being clean!!! Not true! Regarding things being sticky, they were, it was an unusually hot and humid period in mid- August. Our cottages are not air conditioned but have multiple fans for air movement.
This cottage and indeed all of the cottages at Robertson's Cottages are fully occupied during the peak summer season with no complaints such as this, If conditions are as this individual describes, why did he not speak to me during his three day stay? I live here on the resort grounds. This review is nothing but a bogus cheap shot. This old cottage resort is loved by many families who return annually. Check our website. Nothing about this beautiful old resort is misrepresented. I find it sad when a guest who comes here cannot focus on the beauty of the Idlewild area but rather focuses on what he or she 'regards' as deficiencies. In many ways VRBO has created a culture of 'guest inspectors'. After 88 seasons in business and a fully booked resort during the peak season, we do have a keen sense of the needs and expectations of most guests, many who reserve for the next year during their stay. John Yount II, Owner, Robertson's Cottages at Idlewild.
This cabin is located in a great place but it is not a great place to stay, if want a working refrigerator or microwave. when we told the owner he said oh yes it needs some updates.....hoping the next renters have working appliances. Not sure where the washer and dryer or library are located. You need to bring all of your linens. Bed sheets, towels and kitchen towels. thankful for a large island to explore. Not the best sleeping unless you like the center of the mattress you will be warm from sweating due to the old waterproof mattress pad. maybe the other cabins are better equipped.

Thank you for your kind review Kevin? You were at Robertson's Cottages for close to a week and never mentioned anything to me. I am almost always around the resort. Regarding the refrigerator, it was only set halfway to the coldest setting. It works fine. I was unaware the microwave was not working until you notified me the morning you departed. It was immediately replaced. The guest laundry and library is located less than 100 feet from the Sportsmen's Home cottage you stayed in, adjacent to the resort workshop. Again, you never asked me about the laundry room during your stay. It has always been our practice that guests supply their own bed linens and towels. That is clearly stated in our resort information. In response to "needs some updates"; Robertson's Cottages is now in its 86th year of operation, continually operated by my family; my Grandparents, my Parents and now me. Updates are a constant around this classic old resort. We have been incredibly fortunate over the years to many to have guests / families who love this old place and have retuned every summer for decades. Rarely do we have openings for new guests during the summer peak-season unless there is a cancellation, as was the case for the week you rented. This fact speaks volumes about this beautiful old resort. I encourage any readers to closely review our website. We misrepresent nothing whatsoever.

Girls weekend!
We definitely had a relaxing weekend at the Robertson Cabins. We were upgraded to a better/bigger cabin as someone canceled last minute. We had fun playing yard games and taking in the beautiful scenery of the lake. The cabin itself was rustic and relaxing. The only bad thing, was that most of the dishes in the cabinets were dirty from.thr past renter. I'm not sure why someone would put away dirty dishes 😞 Otherwise we definitely will be back and absolutely loved our time here.

Decent cottage, needs better cleaning
We were glad we only had this cottage booked for two nights because there were mice in the attic, cobwebs everywhere, stains in the carpet, and just a lack of cleanliness
The wilderness is right outside and all around us. A stay in Idlewild means experiencing nearly the full spectrum of the natural world. Animals you may encounter during your stay include squirrels (black, flying, red and regular grey), bats, Bubba (Robertson’s resident Bulldog), bunnies, chipmunks, deer, foxes, muskrats, mice, opossums, porcupines, raccoons, skunks and woodchucks...not to mention a PLETHORA of native and migrating birds and bugs. Bugs have zero restrictions in Idlewild. Occasionally you may find a spider in the shower, experience the delightful buzz of a mosquito near your ear, or meet our little friends the gnats who are known for squeaking through screens in the evenings if lights are left on.
What makes this property unique
Long time visitors and newcomers alike are regularly heard describing Robertson’s as their ‘happy place.’ That being said, I'd like to take this opportunity to be upfront about the realities of life at Robertson’s Cottages. We attentively strive to keep our visitors comfortable as we navigate everything that arises within and around these remarkable, rustic, vintage cottages.
Sometimes the sink drips and sometimes the shower leaks. There are leftover rust stains in the claw foot tubs from generations of use and the vintage bed frames tend to wobble.
This area is known as “Nature’s Air Conditioned Vacationland.” Not a single one of our cottages includes air conditioning. All of the cottages feature original windows to finagle open, a rejuvenating harbor breeze and a few beloved fans to push the midsummer air around on the most humid nights. But if it's sweaty o'clock and you've reached a point of physical, mental or emotional discomfort, we highly recommend a good ol’ fashioned dip in the lake. Nothing soothes a sweaty body or nurtures an inner child more than jumping off the end of the dock!
