Sugar Land Countryside and Brazos Bend Park quiet farm house retreat
Established in 1901, south west of Sugar Land, Texas, the Ward Ranch, continues the cow calf ranching operation for which it was established. A perfect location for you and your horse should you choose to try the equestrian trails at the Brazos Bend State Park. Close enough to enjoy the culture rich Sugar Land-Houston area, but far enough away from the city to enjoy the songs of quail, dove, and the horned owl. Star filled skies gave the nearby George Observatory a home, complete with telescopes for public use. The ranch house was built in 1935 and is furnished with local Texas fine art and crafts. The walls act as a gallery for the art works of several generations of painters. The ranch house is in the midst of 300 acres of Gulf Coast Prairie land. A two acre natural wetland pond completes a picture of a small Texas resting spot. Families, Dogs, Horses are welcome. Brazos Bend State Park along with the George Observatory are 8 miles, Varner Hogg Plantation, the home of philanthropist Ima Hogg, open to the public is 9 miles, and George Ranch Historical Park also open to the public is 16 miles. Houston and the Sugarland area, with museums, shopping, restaurants, and entertainment are easy commutes. The Ward Ranch is a peaceful oasis, a good spot to rest while you take in the Gulf Coast Prairie. Photographers and Plein Aire painters are welcome to spend the days and nights roaming the 350 acres painting or photographing the many birds and abundant wildlife calling the Ward Ranch home. The quail, dove, and bull frogs are the sounds of the day.

Met all our expectations and more. Wonderful country home and setting. House was furnished nicely, well equipped with a lot of attention to detail. Hostess was great to work with. Highly recommend this place.
My stay in the Taylor house has been outstanding. It is so peaceful, quiet and relaxing. The sunset and sunrise are breath taking against with the country scenery including the trees, cows, windmills, well manicured pond and park area. The house is very comfortable. Kitchen, laundry room and bathroom are well stocked with all the essentials. Just bring your clothes and enjoy the views.
Catherine is a great host. She allows for your privacy and is available if you need anything, have questions or want to visit. She was as kind as to ask if I needed anything on her trips to the store.
I would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys the peace and quiet that comes with living in the country.

About the host
Hosted by Catherine Ward
Like my Grandmother, and my Father, I grew up on the ranch. I studied art and history at the University of Texas and returned to the ranch to raise my children. I taught history and art for public and private schools. At this time, I am active in ranch operations as well as the local art scene. I love to travel and appreciate VRBO for providing venues throughout the world that feel like Home. VRBO has made it possible to share the 1935 farm house with those interested in the rural life.
Why they chose this property
The ranch was purchased in 1901 by my great grandfather. He moved his farming operation to south Texas to escape the bitter winters of Illinois.
What makes this property unique
The quiet of the ranch allows guests to experience the languages of the birds, the turtles, the frogs, the cattle, the coyotes. Located only 8 miles from Brazos Bend Park, guests can see alligators and wild life in their natural habitat. The observatory at the park entertains guests that enjoy looking to the heavens.
