An artist had a dream and he's inviting you to enjoy it. This is an experience, not just a place to stay. You'll be thrilled and inspired. Shangri-La stories will be told as you recant your Alaska vacation memories into the future. Johney is passionate and fun. His work is unique. It's edgy, and it's hard-core. Much of his art is three-dimensional, assemblage style. Johney figured out that he could make kitchens into art, so he studied rock shops around the country, created his own tools, and opened his stone fabrication shop in the garage of his home in 1999. Johney's eye for the perfect rock and design to match his customer's personality landed him on the cover of Southeast Living Magazine. He's a classic entrepreneur, turning one sale into another tool, and eventually he built built his shop in the back, and expanded the home around it until a masterpiece was created, and ready to share with you. Self-portraiture by late Skylar Engle is displayed throughout the property. These two Engle's have produced brilliant art, with outstandingly contrasting styles to interest you.

We will strive to provide the best customer service and improve as we go with feedback from our guests. We hope to earn your five-star review. Your expectations should be limited to what is promised here, and reviews should reflect how we did with these promises. Before submitting your review, please remember to base it on the following criteria and what was promised to be provided for the price paid as follows:
Easy check-in process – You'll be able to self-check in. Kelli will give you check-in details prior to arrival, including a lock box code. You'll be able to access the rental at your leisure after check-in time, at 4pm. We offer early check-in options, if it's available a couple days prior to your arrival for $25-$50, depending on your arrival time.
Great Communication – Kelli is known to be responsive to guests before, during, and after their stay. You can expect prompt responses to your questions. She'll respond to web site messages as soon as she can.
Clean Accommodations – Your private apartment should be sparkling clean.
Great Auke Bay/Back Loop Location – It's steps from the city bus stop and three miles from the famous Mendenhall Glacier. You can take the bus, which stops one mile away from the glacier. You can also rent a bike, available at the property, and get to the glacier and Auke bay on trails, bike paths, and short sections of road with shoulder/bike lane. This is not a downtown Juneau property. Downtown Juneau is substantially more expensive than the Mendenhall Valley, so this location for the price should not be compared to that of downtown. If you want to be downtown, and don't want to take a 45 minute bus ride to go 16 miles, then this space is not for you.
Accurate Description of the space - I try to make continuous improvements when guests make suggestions and do my best to keep the changes updated and published. If I missed something please let me know, so I can update the information. If you are missing something you were counting on, please let me know immediately, so I can try to provide it for your stay.
Great Value – Juneau is expensive, especially during peak season, and while this is a more affordable option, we understand that it can seem expensive. Part of the value is the ability to rent for only one night and have an additional person. The price fluctuates depending on the season. We have to charge more when the business is there, so that we can afford to have it vacant for long, slow periods.

Shangri-La was amazing. 10x better than a hotel room in every way. Huge space, huge bed! Next time I’m in Juneau, I’ll definitely be trying to book this wonderful space.
Everything was as described, the host was responsive when I lost the check in instructions, and the property was well-maintained and clean. No worries and would definitely stay there again.

Great location
Our family 4 stayed for 5 nights and everything was fine. The shower is not private so one of us would shower while the others stayed out of the bathroom. Do not wash a big load of laundry because it could take awhile to dry. There are hangers so you can dry clothes too. It's about 10 minutes to Safeway and less than 5 minutes for a coffee stand or you could go to Auke Bay Cafe which is super close. I liked how there were steps to get on the bed. I felt like a queen. We would stay here again next time we visit!
Shangri-La met our needs for a couple days in Juneau. The whole unit is very big. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom is great, and I loved that it had a washer/dryer. The sitting area is just ok but it could use a chair. Also, it was not made clear in the amenities that it does not have a regular stove and oven. It has a double cooktop you need to get out of a drawer and a single burner cooktop. They do not heat up like a regular stove. They do have a pretty big toaster oven/airfryer/oven.

I'm glad you like the TV, Dave. I wonder what wasn't comfortable. It has a king bed, nice couch, and other seating. Also, I'm wonder what is weird abut the electrical system. I haven't heard anything about it.

Great service and easy chcek in
I loved that I could quickly check in late from the ferry. I also appreciated having a washer and dryer to wash clothes after hiking at the very close glacier area. The apartment-style lodging had everything we could need for utensils and was very clean. The owner and manager made an extra effort to look for an item I thought I may have left there. I found my lost item elsewhere, but they made extra efforts, which is very much appreciated! Thanks Kelli!

Wow, Cheryl! Thanks for your kind words. It's rare that a guest asks us to locate left-behind items, but usually, when they do, we can locate the item and get it back to the guest. In this case, the Cleaner didn't find the item, but I didn't believe that she looked hard enough, but I just said thank you to her for looking and asked the owner to also look, just in case. I'm so thrilled to hear that the lost item was found, especially since this was not an insignificant/cheap item. I really did think we would find it. I absolutely don't regret trying, it's worth the effort! I hope we have you back again some day!
Clean and as described, see below for detailed review
When we arrived at the unit the property management team was still cleaning due to a late check out and staff injury. They were nice and we decided to come back after a grocery run. They were still finishing up when we got back and gave us a full tour of the property including the adjoining units that could be rented together. It was clean and had everything as promised in the listing. I gave 5 stars since it was as advertised.
This unit would be better for someone looking for a place to sleep versus a couple celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. It did not have the kinds of comfort amenities we are used to. There is not a true living room, just a space in the kitchen area with a couch surrounded by mirrors. There is no stove but plenty of ways to cook food with 2 toaster ovens, microwave and hot plates. The refrigerator was big and clean. So many cupboards. The layout is really awkward like the space was used for some other purpose in the past. There are mirrors and granite everywhere in the unit including the shower tiles. The bed is high up with 6 full length mirrors for the headboard and has steps to get up to it. The only seating for eating are metal bar stools at the island in the kitchen and interestingly in the bedroom with no cushions. There were zebra striped cushions on a wicker couch in the bedroom we used for the stools. We've nicknamed this place the man cave. If we were in our 20's or 30's we would have loved it. As a couple in our 50's we could have used more comfort and less mirrors.

Thanks for your feedback, Karen. We appreciate it. We will try to make it more comfortable with cushioned chairs. I don't think we will eliminate the mirrors, but I'll put that feature in the description so people are aware before booking. Thank you so much!
