Hemlock Cottage is in a charming setting in the village of Bacova, Virginia. Bacova was built in the 1920's as a lumber mill town and was completely restored in 1965. Hemlock Cottage is representative of a company house that has been carefully renovated. It will comfortably sleep 6 adults and 4 children. There are 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. Downstairs there are 3 twin beds and a double. There is a flat screen TV in the living room and master bedroom with streaming service and excellent WiFi throughout. The Bacova location is convenient to shopping and restaurants in nearby Warm Springs and Hot Springs, mineral baths in Warm Springs and 10 minutes from the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs. The property is next door to Holly House another one of our vacation rentals. The two can be combined for large outings and family reunions.

We stayed here to have close access to Lake MooMaw, Hot Springs, Warm Springs, and the Highland County Fair. We had a great trip and Pat was very kind. He made check in easy and helped with random questions we had. His property was pretty and in a nice location. I’d recommend his home if you were traveling as a family!

Great family stay

Layout of the house is perfect for family together time! Porches offer nice outdoor space and there is ample seating in the living room for lots of kids and grownups to hang together.

We had such a nice trip at Hemlock House and even had family staying at the neighbor house, Holly House! It was so nice to sit out on the porch in the morning and have coffee and listen to the birds. Love love love this house!

Cottage located in small town, quiet neighborhood. Very clean. Tastefully decorated. Plenty of dishes, pots and pans, dinner wear. Could us a better corkscrew. Wi-Fi is excellent, as is cable tv. Enjoyed long weekend.

Fantastic Family Vacation

Bacova is a quaint town where Pat Haynes generously shares his private property (Barn Hill loop trail & Hal’s Point) to guest of his cottages. My kids loved fishing and playing in the Jackson River. The Hidden Valley hikes to the swinging bridge was one of our favorites. Proximity to everything (hiking, fishing, food) was perfect. The overlook at lake moomaw was worth the climb. Perfect house for family fun. Thankful that we also got to bring the dog along. Can’t say enough good things about our trip to the Bacova & Hot Springs area. We all are looking forward to returning.

Weekend stay

The property was nice, clean, very basic—exactly what we needed. Two issues: the code to check in was sent via email, but did not exist anywhere in our online our reservation on VRBO, in our message history etc., which meant if the email went missing we couldn't check in. That's what happened. And because there's no cell service we had to backtrack for 10 minutes to get enough bars to call the property owner. He was busy at the time we called and didn't pick up until our fifth try. If the code was included into the reservation online this could have been avoided. Also the beds and pillows are pretty old and worn—hard, sagging mattresses and flat lumpy pillows made for an uncomfortable night's rest. Other than that, the place was what we had hoped for.

Autumn Refresh in Bacova with Friends

Pat is the ultimate host. He wants you to lack for nothing. He offers access to two of his properties that are nature lovers’ dreams come true. Barn Hill Trail includes 360° mountain vistas and intimate, lush ancient, fern and rhododendron filled glacier formations next to the glorious, trout-filled Warm Springs Run. As good as the hiking is, bring your bag chairs and picnic lunch to Hal’s Point and spend hours in nature’s grandeur catching up with friends with disturbances only from a deer or two and a mother duck teaching her brood to swim upstream.

Memorial Day Weekend Getaway

We enjoyed a 4 night stay at the Hemlock Cottage in Bacova and had a great time. The group kept busy with all sorts of activities. We fly fished at Hal’s Point, took a walk around Barn Hill and played a couple rounds of golf at the Cascades. Look forward to our return to Bacova.

Great Little Getaway

Great location - about 10 min from Homestead, which was location of wedding we were attending. Had everything we needed. The daffodils were such a treat too! We arrived to the refrigerator not being cleaned out, but after letting Pat know, he called right away to apologize and help get everything fixed. Cleaner came by next morning to apologize as well. We appreciated this communication! We would love to come back and stay again and figure out the beautify trails near by. Thank you Pat for a great stay!

Unfortunately the day we were planning to arrive our daughter became ill with Covid and therefore we did not travel and quarantined. Prior to this, Pat’s communication was excellent and I am confident we would’ve had a wonderful stay. Pat was very understanding and communicated that he would try to work out an alternate date that we could come stay. I am reading all five stars as I have no doubt this will be an excellent stay, however to be clear we did not actually get to take this trip. Hope to be able to visit soon as now everyone as well!

Great location and outdoor amenities

The cottage is smaller than the listing and photos make it seem, especially common areas - the square footage in the listing is probably accurate (1500 square feet). The heating, if you're staying in the winter, was variable around the house - some rooms were hot, some very cold. The inside was rustic, but in good condition in general. The house could have been cleaner when we arrived (e.g., there was a used mask under a bed), but acceptable. The wood stove/fireplace was a huge plus, making the stay comfortable and ambiance even better. The outdoor options were excellent. The owner provided access to his expansive farm and trails, and the west side of Lake Moomaw is a short car ride, quite remote, and spectacular. Great fishing spot. Restaurant options nearby are limited, as are grocery stores, especially off season, so come stocked up.

Great property. Much better than the pictures. The deck is lovely at sunset and we loved having a fire! It was great for our teenagers and dog- everyone could spread out. 18 minutes to Homestead but quick drive to my favorite restaurant- the Waterwheel. Very clean.

We spent a cozy New Year’s at Hemlock cabin. The cabin was extremely clean and comfortable. We loved having easy access to Hot Springs and took several hikes on the trails in Pat’s beautiful property. Already making plans to stay again!

We had the absolute best time at Hemlock Cottage! The location was perfect, there were tons of activities to entertain everyone in our group and we had the perfect weather! Pat was a wonderful host as well!! One of the top places we have stayed for any extended length of time. Thank you, Pat!!

Pat Haynes has been a resident of Bacova in Bath County, VA since 1976. Just after graduating from Princeton University, he came to Bath County to be the Tennis Director for The Homestead in 1974. In 1981 he purchased the Bacova Guild with his former assistant tennis pro, Ben Johns. At the time, The Guild was a manufacturer of hand made giftware. Most notable, the mailboxes with covers of screen printed artwork laminated in fiberglass. From 1981 - 1996 The Guild grew from 25 employees to over 700 and increased annual sales from $250,000 to over $50 million becoming the largest industry in Bath County. In 1996 they sold Bacova Guild to Burlington Industries. From 1997-2002, Pat was a Real Estate Sales Associate, and in 2003 he received his Real Estate Broker's License. Since 1980, he has owned and managed Bacova Properties, a real estate investment and property management company. It is currently the largest single source for commercial, residential, and vacation rental property in Bath County. Bacova Property's commercial locations are easily recognized by the distinctive Bacova Jockey statue located just outside each property. Pat has been active in community organizations serving as a two term President of the Bath County Chamber of Commerce, and Co-chaired the Bath County Bicentennial Committee. In 2003, he was voted Business Person of the Year.

Pat lives with his wife, Bebe, on their 500 acre farm, Barn Hill, where they raised five children. Currently there are three horses, two ponies and a donkey on the farm along with their two Newfoundlands (Porter & Stout) and three Jack Russells (Briggs, Rascal & Rufus). Guests who reside in bacovavacationrentals.com are welcome to walk the 2 1/2 mile & 4 1/2 mile Barn Hill Trails and also to enjoy their private access to The Jackson River, Hal’s Point.
