Truly a retreat from everything
We had the pleasure of staying with Lucy and Mike in their separate upstairs apartment and felt very welcomed. Sapelo Island is somewhere we come to get away from everything. The absence of stores and restaurants is a draw for us. Wish we could stay longer :)
Sapelo is a sweet get away and Lucy and Mike are extremely accommodating and gracious. The apartment has all the necessities. Lucy and Mike made sure we had everything we needed.
A heavenly stay tucked under the eaves
Lucy and Mike are wonderfully hospitable and friendly, and the apartment exceeded our expectations and has everything needed. The bed is comfortable, and the little kitchen is adequate to prepare full meals. The island is an enchanting combination of nature and subtle cultural richness. We recommend the DNR tour and a walk through the cemetaries. Do bring all groceries, as the local store does not offer much other than canned goods, beer and soda. The beaches are beautiful and secluded, though the more northerly one is a bit of a walk in. Birds abound on Alligator Pond, and we saw an eagle's nest, though its occupant was elusive. Do not expect a village environment,as the island has a rural feel, but everyone we encountered was warm and friendly. We highly recommend this accomodation, and a weekend on Sapelo became a bucket list item.
Find yourself on Sapelo
From arriving at the dock through our stay on the island, every part of our short Sapelo adventure was memorable. The ferry rides were fun and help set the stage for the uniqueness that awaits. Lucy and Mike were super helpful and responsive getting us set up. Lucy gave us a ride from the ferry dock and info about the apartment and island. They live below so can be found if needed. The apartment is clean, neat, well appointed and organized. Definitely would stress bringing your food needs, since the island store is more about the basics. We found the books about Sapelo super helpful to provide a historical perspective but also put words to the personality and palpable mystique the island possesses. We were ready to explore and having an included island car and bikes makes all the difference. We didn’t have enough time in our 2 days to see much of the North end of the island. We’ll do that on the next visit. We did fit in a trip to the mansion and did a self guided tour, visited Nanny Goat Beach, the light house, and post office dock area at sunset. I did a solo bike ride to Raccoon Bluff which gave a greater sense of remoteness and I found the island is larger than I thought. Seeing 4 pileated woodpeckers very near each other was a nice surprise. A highlight for sure was sunrise at Cabretta beach access with no other humans as far as the eye of this human could see. A bald eagle sat perched in a dead tree not far from the wooden bridge. So serene. The island overall has such a laid back time forgotten feel. The sense of peace enables one to clear the mind and reconnect. Forget about mainland life for awhile. Thank you Lucy and Mike for your hospitality and providing all that is needed for such a memorable trip!
My Sapelo Retreat is on Sapelo Island which is 4 1/2 mi. from the mainland. On the Island there is only 1 small convenience store and a post office. Several of the things I have commented on are in the historic fishing village of Darien, a frequent overnight before the trip over to Sapelo. The restaurants I've commented on are in Darien and there is a fine gourmet wine and cheese store and wine bar there, Waterfront Wine and Gourmet on the waterfront on Broad Street. Some types of activities require hiring a guide, deep sea fishing, kayaking, scuba diving but I can connect you with the folks who do those things. Just ask! I'll be glad to answer your questions.
