Fun with Insectes (French House Centipede Learnings)It’s not every holiday that you get to learn about local entomology. The house centipede my wife found was crawling away from the humid bathroom area after the rest of us were asleep. The house centipede envenomates its prey with mild venom and small organs of envenomation causing paralysis.Good news for the wife was this centipede’s bark - it is quite scary looking with very long legs (Up to 15 pairs) - is bigger than its bite [for a human at least]. It rarely bites humans, preferring to flee. When it does bite a person it rarely breaks the skin and at most causes irritation and mild swelling. House centipedes live anywhere from 3 - 7 years, but this one didn’t make it past its first encounter with my wife. While the centipede didn’t suffer from bad dreams that evening, my wife sure did. Bleery eyed she awoke the next day with tales of the centipede, scooping up leg specimens, el squisho, she scraped from the floor to inspect. This was only the most interesting of bugs we encountered. When we asked if we could cancel any part of our 4 night stay because of the bugs and other problems, we were told the bugs were not mosquitoes and they could provide a UV-bulb to thwart these pests. Biggest issue was the pool & property impression based on the pics. The “Property Grounds” picture in the listing crops out the proximity of the residence with cars and playground equipment directly attached to the property.
