The property was as described, but we felt that it could have been cleaner on the exterior. The space had the basics. This place might be suitable for a younger family, but i was traveling with my parents and they weren’t very comfortable with the beds. The location was slightly away from the town center. Walkable distance for some.
We love Grand Haven and the location very peaceful. A short walk to the downtown area and about 2 miles from the light house. The porch was our favorite place to hang out!
The location was quiet, within walking distance of several good restaurants, parks, and shops, and the house itself was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our stay. The host was easy to get ahold of and made sure we had all our needs taken care of. Highly recommend!
Great location! Walked everywhere! Short distance to the social district. Great backyard! Enjoyed a fire ~ loved that it stayed daylight until 10-10:30 pm.
Gabriel was very responsive and helpful!
I stayed with 2 friends and a dog. Its very close to downtown and the beach. The upstairs unit was occupied by different guest during our trip. We couldnt hear the first group at all. If we didnt see their vehicle, we wouldn't have even known they were there. The second set was very loud. We could hear every step they took and their music at all hours of the night. If you are a heavy sleeper this is an ideal place to stay. If you are a light sleeper be aware that you may not get much sleep depending on who is renting the upper level. Other than that, we had no complaints at all. It was clean and cozy. We loved being able to hang out on the porch and enjoy the backyard in the beautiful weather.

Hi Destiny,
Thanks for the review!
And sorry to hear that you had issues with the upstairs guests. If you happen to stay with us again, feel free to shoot me a message regarding loud guests; I'm happy to remind them of typical quiet hours if needed.
Did the job for us. The floor above was squeaking when ever people were there. Kitchen drain was constantly making odd noise. Kitchen needs a cutting board, master bedroom door needs a latch.

Chris,
Thanks for the feedback. As far as the squeaky floors, it's a 100+yr old house. Unfortunately there's not much we can do about that.
The 'weird noise' is the sump pump in the crawl space that needs to run occasionally due to the closet proximity to the Grand River.
I'm not sure what you mean on the 'door latch'. The master bedroom has a door handle. I'll follow up with you to get some clarity on this one.
Thanks!
Good pet friendly property at a great price with room to improve
This was our third visit to GH and the first at this property. We LOVED the backyard for our pooch and the price is fantastic. The host was quick to respond and accommodating. I suffer from a spinal disorder so travel is always painful, but I slept well so yay! That said, I have a few warnings for potential renters and some recommendations to the owner.
First, this is a split unit. I don’t believe this is called out in the listing apart from the mention of a shared backyard. There was a lot of noise coming from the upstairs unit, both the house itself and the guests. Also, there is no washer/dryer in the lower unit. That’s on me for not noticing, but heads up & pack accordingly. The walking distance to downtown was further than expected. While it’s manageable for able bodied adults, we have 7, 9, and 11yo kids who got really tired and crabby.
As far as things that could be improved…My husband and I ate most meals standing, but there is space for a larger dining table. A four seater would probably fit okay. There wasn’t enough tableware and we had to wash dishes daily. There was one towel holder with three hooks. In a beach town, more places to dry towels/suits is desperately needed (thinking small clothesline in the yard). There’s also nowhere to store clothes in the 2nd bedroom. I borrowed baskets from the bathroom for this purpose, but there are a lot of small space storage options or shelves that could work. Mostly minor inconveniences that can easily be addressed!
Clean and homey - this adorable rental has a great location. The backyard was perfect for the dogs. The kitchen is well equipped and the host is excellent!
We had an amazing stay at Rubys Retreat. Located right as you come into town but still off the beaten path. It was quiet and the kids absolutely loved having a backyard to play in. Place was very clean and had everything we needed
Our family stayed here for 3 nights and loved it. The house was clean, the kids loved the 2 smart TVs, and the neighborhood was quiet. Also the location is great. Close drive to the beach and walking distance to Biggby, Sweet Temptations (candy, ice cream), Culver’s, and lots more. Gabriel answered every question I had very quickly as well. Only drawback was no tub for the kids, but everything else was great.
The location was awesome, close to everything. We walked to restaurants, the beach, and downtown.
The huge backyard and large shower were pleasant surprises.
We had a great stay in Grand Haven! We had plenty of room for our family of 4. The location was convenient for the beach, shopping, and eating out. The house is in a safe and nice neighborhood. The house was very clean!!! We were grateful for the fast WiFi and Netflix!! Our kids were very happy! The tile walk in shower was huge and so beautiful! What a bonus!
Unfortunately, we could hear the tenants upstairs talk and move around when we were in bed but it didn’t keep us awake. Placing a drying rack in the screened in porch would be a nice addition, as we had wet swimsuits and towels each day from the beach.
Overall, we had a great stay and were very pleased with Grand Haven and our rental!!!!!!!
Easy to book and check in, excellent location as just a short walk to downtown. The place was spotless! We didn’t spend much time in the unit as we were out paddle boarding all day, but it was nice to come home to a good hot shower and bed. Do keep in mind the house is split into 2 rentals so you will certainly hear the people above you.
We enjoyed our stay at Ruby’s retreat! The place is in a quiet neighborhood just minutes from downtown Grand Haven and the beach. Our pup also loved the backyard to run around in (it’s not fully fenced in) and enjoyed his first experience at the beach! We were able to take him to City Beach in the early morning and late afternoon/evening. We also appreciated access to the kitchen with misc pots and pans. Although it was just two of us and a small dog, the VRBO would easily accommodate another couple or a family of 4-5 with the beds available. Thanks for a great trip!
Stayed here with my family and pup. It was very spacious and clean. The location is great to get to downtown Grand Haven. We had a great time making a bonfire in the fire pit in the backyard and letting our dog run around. It’s not very clearly stated on the listing, but there is a unit above. You might hear the guests above walking around, however, it did not pose to be an issue to us.
My group of friends had a wonderful time stay at Ruby’s Retreat. Location was perfect within walking and driving distance of so many awesome things. Neighborhood is super quiet and nice. The host was very helpful and responsive. Would definitely stay again. Thanks!!

As longtime residents of Grand Haven, we're stoked to welcome you to Ruby's Retreat! Whether you need recommendations for local surf spots or assistance with anything during your stay, we're here to ensure you have a rad time.
Why they chose this property
At one point we called 'Ruby's Retreat' home for several years. Once we moved away from the area, we had to share the location and allow others to experience this quiet corner of old town.
What makes this property unique
Most of Grand Haven can be quite busy in the summer months. Ruby's Retreat is a perfect little corner that keeps you away from the busy downtown area, but is still close enough to walk anywhere you'd like.
