About this property

The Retreat - A Private Architectural Home Overlooking the Barrington Valley

A striking, architect-designed home set on a ridge above the Barrington Valley, with sweeping views, river access, and unforgettable night skies. Thoughtfully designed, completely off-grid, and crafted for a truly elevated country escape.

Perched high on a ridge in a peaceful rural valley, this architecturally designed home offers some of the most breathtaking views in Gloucester. Framed by rolling mountains and expansive skies, the house is perfectly positioned to capture uninterrupted panoramas across the Barrington Valley.

With the pristine Barrington River flowing through the property, guests enjoy direct access to the riverbank - ideal for picnics, leisurely walks, or a refreshing swim on warm days. Set within dark-sky country, nights are just as memorable as days, with the Milky Way stretching brilliantly overhead in a truly awe-inspiring natural display.

The home has been thoughtfully designed to celebrate its surroundings. Expansive windows and open-plan living spaces draw the landscape inside, while clean architectural lines are softened by natural materials that blend seamlessly with the environment. A spacious outdoor patio invites you to slow down, unwind, and soak in the sweeping views. Inside, high ceilings, abundant natural light, and warm, considered finishes create a space that feels both airy and deeply comfortable.

Sustainability sits at the heart of the property. Built in line with biodynamic principles, the house is completely off grid, powered by solar energy and supported by rainwater tanks and a modern septic system - offering a refined, eco-conscious stay without compromise.

"The Retreat" Barrington

The property is located in a beautiful country near to Gloucester (assuming the river crossings are not too high to cross as they were when we were there which added another 20mins to the drive to town), however the main attractions of Barrington Tops are still over an hours drive away. Gloucester Tops was also inaccessible when we were there. I dint think this is unusual as the area gets a lot of rainfall and crossings quickly become impassable. The house is interesting, secluded and has stunning views. The layout of the house is unusual as 2 of the bedrooms are semi separate to the house which is fine for adults, however possibly wouldn't suit families with young children. This is not made clear on the listing. The house has fans, however has no air-conditioning which makes it uncomfortable as we had 35 degree days in March.Overall a beautiful property, however there is not much to do there.
