About this property
Nori Retreat
Welcome to Nori Retreat, a sanctuary where heritage, luxury, and nature converge in perfect harmony. Nestled on Hindmarsh Island amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Nori Retreat offers a unique escape to reconnect with the world around you.
The story of Nori Retreat began when Brenton and Krishna acquired this remarkable property in October 2024. Built in 1883, the house has gracefully evolved over the years through various renovations and restorations. While modern touches ensure comfort and convenience, the home retains its classic charm, offering a heartfelt nod to its bygone era. High ceilings, polished timber floors, and ornate details evoke a sense of timeless elegance.
One of the most unique features is the dining suite -handcrafted with exquisite care and brought over from England by boat specifically for this house. These features, along with its storied past, make every corner of Nori Retreat a true testament to its heritage.
The name Nori carries layers of meaning - a blend of personal and cultural significance. Derived from the local Ngarrindjeri name for the Australian pelican, Nori honors these majestic birds that grace the serene wetlands of Kurrangk (The Coorong). Also immortalized in Colin Thiele’s beloved novel Storm Boy, this unique and rugged landscape stands as a symbol of South Australia's natural beauty and cultural richness. The name also carries a personal connection, as Nori is a heartfelt nod to Brenton and Krishna's daughter, Anora, whose nickname embodies the warmth and love that define the retreat.
Our connection to the Coorong runs even deeper through Canoe the Coorong, our first eco-tourism venture and a true labor of love. Canoe the Coorong is Brenton’s “baby” born as an idea during a university group project while he was studying eco-tourism. After refining the concept, Brenton took his first tour in 2010 and has since poured his heart into growing and developing the business. Over the years, Canoe the Coorong has welcomed countless guests, providing them with immersive, sustainable experiences that showcase the breathtaking beauty of Kurrangk. In 2023, we expanded this vision by acquiring Canoe the Riverland, allowing us to offer unique paddling experiences along the Murray River, its lakes, and the Coorong. Together, these ventures form Aspire Paddling Company (APC), a name inspired by their daughter Anora’s initials, reflecting their commitment to meaningful, eco-conscious connections to the landscapes we all love.
At Nori Retreat, you'll notice a subtle connection to Canoe the Coorong, as its base is located discreetly on the property. From time to time, you may see one of our friendly guides quietly preparing for a tour, blending seamlessly into the retreat’s tranquil atmosphere.
An Unforgettable Stay Guests staying at Nori Retreat will enjoy an escape that’s both luxurious and thoughtful. Running entirely off rainwater, sustainability is at the heart of our retreat, and we encourage water-conscious practices during your stay. The home features:

- Bedroom 3 is fitted with a cozy double-size bed, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.
- Bedroom 4 offers a single set of bunk beds, suitable for a small adult or children, making it ideal for families.
A two-way bathroom with a corner bath and separate shower, ensuring comfort for all guests.
A huge kitchen, equipped with extensive bench and cupboard space, dual pantries, a large island bench for casual dining, and a 900mm gas cooktop with an electric oven. The kitchen is fully stocked with a dishwasher, Nespresso machine and milk frother, smoothie blender, toaster, sandwich press, and more- all while offering a serene outlook over the water.
A laundry complete with a front-loader washing machine.
A spacious lounge room with a cozy combustion heater, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring.
Step outside, and you’ll find a massive, paved gable-roof pergola with pull-down café blinds—perfect for entertaining, enjoying a leisurely brunch, or hosting an evening BBQ. For a cozy night under the stars, visit the fire pit area by the water’s edge, where you can create lasting memories.
For those who enjoy the outdoors, Nori Retreat’s extensive property offers walking trails through revegetated areas leading from the retreat to Chappel Road. These trails showcase native flora, including Sheoaks (a favorite of the nationally endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo), Boobialla, and other plants from the Coorong region. Guests are welcome to launch kayaks or canoes directly from the property, or simply cast a line from the front lawn and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of fishing.
