About this property

1890's Log Cabin ~ 230 Acre Private Reserve ~ 150’ Waterfall ~ Hiking Trails

Imagine having your own private sanctuary in the heart of the Gunks.
This home resides on a 230 acre Private Reserve land open to members and their guests, right next door to Minnewaska State Park. Unparalleled proximity to 30,000 acres of forest, sky lakes and trails to explore. Minutes from New Paltz, Minnewaska, Mohonk and Trapps. Incredible views and surrounding nature abounds. It is a hikers and nature lovers paradise.

Built in the 1890's as a hunting retreat, this log house is a private residence that has rich history within its American Chestnut walls, a wood now extinct. Decorated and added onto by the current family from the 1960's on, the house is a museum of curated artifacts and a feast for the eyes. There are several levels of decks facing either the valley, 2 freshwater reflection pools, or a 150' waterfall. The sound of running water abounds.

First floor: 1 queen bedroom with en-suite bathroom is off the dining room on the first floor. This bedroom was occupied by Ralph Lauren in the 1980's when he would stay here. 2 additional bedrooms with queen beds and 1 small bunk room with 2 single beds all share the main bathroom with a shower. Dining room with vaulted ceilings seats 8 and the Living room has another dining option for 8-10. Living Room has an 1890's fire place with reading nooks and a Grand Piano. There is a chess nook and a quiver of classic board games. The Falls Room is a multi-purpose room with space for yoga, group meetings or playroom. There is a projector a large viewing screen for presentations or movie nights. The galley kitchen is fully stocked with cooking basics and boasts Julia Child's very own stove!

Second Floor: This level is a suite unto itself with an open concept. Queen bed, living room, fireplace and two queen size reading nooks that could also sleep an additional 2 people each. A nursery room connects to the bathroom with tub and shower.

This house is NOT for everyone. It is rustic and a unique experience. The fresh water reflection pool may have tadpoles or frogs due to the fact that there are no chemicals. The surroundings around the house we call 'expert' terrain. It is uneven and requires attention. We have just added Mini Split AC/Heat units in both the falls room and the living room. There are fans in all of the bedrooms.

This home resides on Private Reserve land open to members and their guests. The 1 mile driveway requiring 4 wheel drive in winter months (or we can arrange for transport from base of mountain to the top where the home is). There are several private cabins and Geo Domes on the Reserve that can be rented separately.

This house comes with a host who lives nearby. The host can grocery shop for you prior to arrival, book massages, yoga, guide hikes and arrange for a private chef to prepare dinners for an additional cost. Inquire for more info. Let us know how can we make hour stay more incredible?

Wineries and distilleries also abundant in the area: Hudson Whiskey, Angry Orchard, Whitecliff Vineyards and the Hudson Valley Wine Trail, amongst others.

Hike to Awosting Lake 1.5 hrs.
Hike to Gertrude's Nose 1 hr.
Hike to private Atwater Falls 25 min.
Tillson Lake 2 min away: for fishing and kayaking. (Equipment not supplied and permit required for fishing)

Host profile image
My father purchased this property from the Girl Scouts in the late '60's - once a hunting cabin, then a Girl Scout headquarters and now a private home that has hosted many incredible guests, organizations and clubs over the years. Part of a conservation based community, the Awosting Club, on the Awosting Reserve boasts several tent platforms with geodesic domes and tents (a big upgrade from the Scout Tents!), cabins and other amenities. Incredible hiking paths are within the property as well as adjacent - with 30,000 of forever wild Park and Preserve Land are miles of carriage roads for Mountain Biking, hiking, cross country skiing and horseback riding.

Why they chose this property

One of the most unique and spectacular privately owned property in the Hudson Valley. It is comfortable and rustic at the same time. History surrounds and inspires.

Walk out for morning coffee overlooking the 150' Little Angel Falls...or SKIP the coffee and opt for a hike to another private waterfall 20 minutes up the mountain to get your inspired start. The air is rejuvenating. The water is healing. Escape and recharge.
