Luxurious and Private Hacienda Immersed in Nature Outside of Mérida
This historical Hacienda is tucked away on the lush grounds of Hacienda Sac Chich. Casa de Maquinas is a spectacular complex of 3 limestone buildings, a water tower and an 85 ft. chimney. Surrounded by palm-filled gardens Casa de Maquina’s three 2000sq.ft. rectangular structures date back to 1850. Throughout the hacienda, there is evidence of its previous utilitarian life. Iron wheels and massive beams are remnants of its past, mixed with all the modern conveniences you could want.
Building #1:Casa Vieja Casa Vieja houses the Living Room, a Colonial Kitchen, 2 full bathrooms (one of which is in the restored water tower), and 2 King Bedrooms. One of the King Bedrooms has stairs that lead to a loft that has an additional single and double bed. All bedrooms have Air Conditioning.
Both bedrooms and the main bathroom of Casa Vieja have doors that open out to the pool and garden. Originally the water tank for the hacienda, the freshwater pool is now a shimmering refuge from the heat of the Yucatan. A steel and bamboo pergola and a playita of shallow water with a hammock suspended above provide areas for rest and shade.
The Colonial Kitchen has everything you need to cook (if you wish!) including a charcoal BBQ outside. The large and airy Living Room has a full stereo system with control of the speakers located throughout both houses as well as the outdoor spaces. You will also find plenty of games and books.
______
Building #2:Casa Nueva Opposite Casa Vieja is another building, Casa Nueva. This house has a dramatic central hallway that is the entrance to 3 Bedrooms (all have King beds) Each bedroom has it’s own full bathroom. All rooms in Casa Nueva have soaring 26’ ceilings and 13’ high doors. The highlight of Casa Nueva, the Primary Bedroom, has a sunken living area for relaxing, and a private walled garden with a settee and plunge pool. Casa Nueva is fully airconditioned.
______________
Building #3: The Loggia Between Casa Vieja and Casa Nueva is the open-air living room and dining space, the Loggia. It is surrounded by lily and fish-filled reflecting water ponds and dramatic lighting. The Loggia has two sofas, a fireplace, a built-in settee sitting area, hammock space, and a large dining table. From the loggia climb an enclosed spiral staircase to a rooftop lounge and star-viewing platform. Here you can watch the moon, stars, sunset, an approaching storm, or enjoy the night breeze.
The Property: Beyond these buildings, in a hidden garden, you find the regulation-size bocce ball court. Framing the entire hacienda are dry-stacked stone walls, tall hedges of fica, and walls creatively designed with metal cages filled with local limestone. The grounds are filled with exotic rare palms, bamboos, gingers, tropical plants, and fruit trees.

About the host
Hosted by Jillian McNamara
Being frequent visitors to the Pacific beaches and colonial central Mexico since the 70's we read about the restored haciendas of the Yucatan. In 2001 we went on the first of many 'hacienda hopping' trips to the Yucatan. The grandeur, architectural scale, historical and economic relevance and process of restoration of these haciendas intrigued us and soon we were researching haciendas for sale on the internet. It wasn't until we rented a Hacienda for my 50th Birthday in 2003 that we experienced a sense of ownership while entertaining friends and family there. On that trip we toured hacienda Sac Chich, shortly thereafter made an offer and 5 months later it was ours. Sac Chich was the first and only hacienda we looked at for sale. We always knew we would someday have a home in Mexico, but always envisioned the Pacific coast or colonial interior. The Yucatan became the pure isolated uncomplicated Mexico that we remembered from travels 30 years ago.
Why they chose this property
Being at Casa de Maquinas is your opportunity to stop and reset. Surrounded by lush tropical jungle and architectural gems, sometimes you find yourself just sitting taking it all in. Relax in the pool, nap in a hammock, stroll the gardens.
If adventure is more your style, the area is famous for it's crystal blue cenotes (limestone underground swimming holes), Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza, and historical sites. Merida is a city rich with culture, magnificent architecture, award-winning restaurants, and cultural events.
Yucatan's beaches are calm and perfect for a day trip. Take a flamingo tour and follow up with fresh ceviche and a cold drink with your feet in the sand!
