About this property

A Whole-Family Retreat on the Rogue River

This is the perfect family getaway, set on 5.5 acres of forest adjacent to the Rogue River within the "Wild and Scenic" protected corridor. Take a float on the stretch of exciting rapids that run past the house; enjoy a day hike along the river to see salmon jumping the dramatic Rainie Falls; pack a picnic and cool off in nearby creeks; toss a line in the water for world-class fishing; or explore the amenities of the property, which include ping pong, volleyball, archery range (bring your own bow and arrows), or a quiet retreat sitting beside the river. The family can watch movies together in the living room, or the kids can play downstairs in the "game room," where there's board games and a separate TV for hooking up the DVD player or your own gaming devices.

This cedar shingle, 3-level house comfortably sleeps 6-8 people in 1 king, 2 queen, 2 twin-sized beds, and queen Murphy bed. It's perfect for two couples or a family with children. It is stocked, for your convenience, with a fully-equipped kitchen and laundry, as well as bedding, towels, and paper products. Satellite internet and WiFi are also provided (extra charge for data over 50 gb, only). Cellular calling is out of range, but iMessaging is good, as is WiFi calling.

So bring the whole family and take in as much quiet and seclusion or wild and thrilling activity as your heart desires. There's something here for everyone.

Absolutely Amazing Stay!
Before we even arrived we were excited about staying at this property. The location was perfect, and the pictures on the listing were pretty impressive. That said... the pictures on the listing don't even do this place justice. It was just amazing! The house itself was a standout, but beyond that the property that it sits on, right on the bank of the Rogue River, was incredible. Beautiful grounds that were more than just pretty to look at- the outdoor activities for the kids were perfect! The kids loved the ping pong table, and to have it situated not in some dingy basement, but nestled amongst the trees on a beautiful property- Wow! The house itself was incredible. Dad (myself) Loved grilling on the outdoor deck that overlooked the property and the river beyond. Mom (my wife) loved doing art projects with the kids next to the wall of picture windows with a view of the river. The many, many thoughtful touches in the house really pushed it to the next level. From the well stocked game room downstairs, to the linen closets that had everything we needed, to the knick knack drawers in the kitchen that had all those last minute bits and bobs that we had forgotten to bring. Very well laid out, we had everything we needed for our relaxing week long stay. Communication with the host was very well handled. Pamela was in communication with us before and after our stay. Any questions or concerns we had were responded to promptly and effectively. We would stay here again!

What a great place!
Such a peaceful, relaxing time and close to so many attractions along the river. House was great, and grounds were so nice! So relaxing to watch the river flow by from the living room. Host and caretaker were also fantastic.

Stunning Home with 5 Acre Gardens on the Rogue River
This home is truly stunning. It has been lovingly taken care of and tended too with great care. The home is spacious, very private and quiet. It is spread out over three levels so its ideal for large families or friends sharing. The home is well stocked and everything is super clean and fresh. There are lovely wall to wall, floor to ceiling windows in the large comfortable living room looking out to the river and gardens. The 5 acre gardens surrounding the home feel like a botanical garden with lovely lush trees, bushes, grassy areas and flowers. It is a magical setting that is a real "Wow". The grounds are set up with ping pong table, zip line, lounge chairs and more for your enjoyment. There is a care taker home on another part of the property so if you have any questions they are there to help. The owner Pamela is very responsive, accommodating and gracious. She wants to make your stay memorable and is very easy to communicate with. This is a remarkable property.

What a lovely getaway. Property was very clean and location was serene. Lots of bird watching through the picture windows in the morning. Teens had a great time-lots of yard to spread out in. Would highly recommend.

About the host

I am a retired sociologist and single adoptive mother of a teenage boy. I first started coming to Galice in the late 1970s, when I fell in love with river kayaking and the Rogue River. I taught kayaking for many years here and in California, where I live year around, and explored exciting rivers throughout the USA (and even Russia). But I must say that the Rogue is hard to beat for its beauty and wild life.

Why they chose this property

To keep a long story short, in the 1970s my father purchased the property two doors down, which housed Sundance River Expeditions, and in the early 2000s, I acquired it from him. I loved that property, but it was set up for commercial use, and I really wanted a place I could call my own. I had always admired this property for its amazing gardens and lovely perch in the forest above the river. So, in 2019, when I learned that the property was going up for sell, I jumped on the opportunity to buy it.

Besides being the most spectacularly beautiful property on the Rogue (I know, I'm partial), it comes with a fascinating history. It was previously owned by Jim Wickham, whose father, John Wickham, owned the land that now includes the mine across the river, the other properties downstream of this one, the Almeda campground next door, and acres upon acres of land up the hill behind us. In the 1970s he sold most of that to the state, but kept his rights to the spring from where the house water comes from, and a few other plots of land where family members still have homes. Jim and his wife had a trailer they stayed in, but then had this house built around 1973. It's a "Linden House" -- which at the time was a highly -regarded, high-quality, pre-fabricated home.

What makes this property unique

Five acres on the river that are all yours, beautiful gardens, family fun outdoors, convenient access to the river. Plus, the house is among a small cluster of 4 properties, 3 miles out of Galice, and the last private properties on the Rogue. It's all wilderness from there.
