Mt. Hood Hideaway: Hiking, harmony, hot tub, and access to the hill!
Welcome to the Mt. Hood Hideaway! A quiet, cozy retreat among the trees, right near the beautiful Salmon River.
The cabin (3 bedrooms w/ 5 beds, and 2 bathrooms) is great for family and friends, as well as for a romantic get-away or solo adventure. It has a well-equipped kitchen and outdoor grill for preparing meals. A beautiful propane-fueled cast iron stove in the living room provides inside ambiance at the touch of a button, while big windows, skylights, multiple outside decks, and a hot tub provide lots of ways to enjoy the sounds and fresh air of the forest just outside, as well.
Accessibility: 2 bedrooms and one full bath upstairs, and 1 bedroom and full bath downstairs. There are 2 steps to enter the house, and it is located at the end of a (very bumpy! please drive carefully/slowly!) dead end dirt road. You can hear, but not see, the nearby Salmon River, which is walking distance away. The nearest trailhead into the Mt Hood National Forest is a mere 15 minutes (on foot) away, with many, many others a short drive away. The cabin is also conveniently located within reach of a full grocery store (less than 5 min drive), library, bakery, gas station, and a bunch of wonderful local restaurants within a 10 min drive (BBQ, Japanese, pizza).
Activities: Within a 15 miles, you can ski, paddle, fish, mountain bike, or snowshoe on countless trails, rivers, and streams. Enjoy starry nights from the hot tub or wildlife viewing in the early morning through the many big windows or from one of the multiple decks. We also have musical instruments (piano, guitar, banjos and shakers), plus many games and puzzles for indoor fun.
Please note: This is NOT a party house-- it is a place for a peaceful getaway or get-together. We love and respect our neighbors, and ask all guests to observe quiet hours outside on the decks from 10 pm until 6 am during their stay. Also, there is NO garbage service at the cabin, so all garbage and recycling must be packed out (or can be taken care of for an extra fee). Please plan ahead for this, as it is a wildlife corridor and leaving garbage outside the house is not an option. Lastly, we ask that folks not wear shoes in the house to keep our cleaning fee as low as possible, thank you!

We enjoyed our stay overall! Items we didn’t think we would need were provided and the communication was quick and helpful.
The location is close to lots of amazing places in Mt. Hood. We definitely are planning to come back for a winter stay!
Our grandchildren loved being able to explore the creek and trees. Only 10 minutes from snow play and all enjoyed the piano. The kitchen was fully supplied with everything you could want. Great house

Thank you so much for your visit and we are so glad you enjoyed the house and environment-- please come back again!
My family absolutely loved staying in this peaceful home during our vacation. We were able to take walks around the cabin, to the river, and enjoy the view of trees all around and the peaceful forest noises. The cabin comes equipped with everything we needed during our three day stay. We absolutely loved how close it was to Trillium Lake which was our daytime fun excursions as we stayed in September. I would love to stay again.

Thank you Sharon! So glad you got to spend some time at Trillium, we love it too!
We loooved staying at this sweet home! Communication was great, the location perfect, the beds so comfy, and the view off the back porch idyllic. It felt safe for our 1 year - we brought sound machines to cover the creaking upstairs other reviewers mentioned and then it wasn’t a problem at all. There were lots of fans to use and the hot tub was lovely. Really appreciated the stay and would definitely visit again!

Good idea to bring the sound machines! The floors upstairs at the cabin are definitely creaky, so light sleepers may want to bring ear plugs if there is a large group (or bring sound machines like these folks did!) The squeaks are esp noticeable because, otherwise, it is a very very quiet place. Thank you for sharing this tip! Please come back again when you are in the area!
We celebrated the 20-plus year gathering of friends and had a perfect time cooking in the well-appointed kitchen, talking in the cozy living room and soaking in the tub with it's fairyland backyard surrounds. Thank you!

That is so wonderful Laura!! We are so happy to hear it. Very glad you enjoyed and hope you come back soon!
we loved staying at this home. It was so homey and warm, with everything we needed included musical instruments, a well supplied kitchen with spices too, a nice hot tub for four, a lovely stream with trees In the back, tons of games, lots of really plush towels. Beds were comfy. Pillows could be better. But everything else, including location, was perfect!

Thank you Francine! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you will return. I know the pillows are a bit on the firm side, but with COVID precautions in place we purchased all new, anti-microbial, non-down pillows for the beds. This means
House was even better than we expected. Everyone enjoyed the complete tranquility of the back deck, watching the deer and birds. A great escape. Thank you Sarah

Such a pleasure to have you, and so glad you had a good recharge at the Hideaway. Thank you for coming, and please come again!
This adorable cabin made our stay in the Mount Hood area so awesome! We had everything we needed to make meals, relax outside in the shade, play games with our children, and soak in the hot tub after a day of hiking. The owner went above and beyond to help us add more time to our stay, was quick at communicating with us, and super helpful. We thought we might be hot as there is no a/c, but the house cools down quite nicely. This was a gem of a place! We highly recommend!

Thank you so much for coming to the Hideaway with your family! We are so happy to know you enjoyed the outside and inside activities, and hope you'll come again!
My family of four (two kids 3&8) had the BEST time at Sarah’s cabin! So close to the snow, at a dead end street and very quiet. We were lucky to see a few salmon in the creek, enjoyed the hot tub, and had plenty of space to cook and play. The cabin has lots of fun puzzles (we did 6 in two days ) and fun instruments you can play around with. Sarah suggested white river sno park and it had the most beautiful views and epic sledding! We cannot wait to come back and will absolutely recommend to friends and family. Awesome spot

Thank you Aryn! We are so happy you enjoyed your stay-- come back again!
This was one of the loveliest homes we’ve ever found in years of traveling. It’s just beautiful with curated, vintage decor in every corner. You can tell when a property owner spends time at a place. The kitchen was beautifully appointed with quality tableware, tools, and appliances. And non-perishables are left for guests such as oils, seasonings, basics like flour and sugar. The beds were so comfortable with pretty quilts and the quiet was just what we needed to catch up on sleep and slow our minds. Every item in the hideaway is special and everything works. And best of all it is moments away from the spectacular Salmon River old growth trails. One tip for visitors to the area; don’t believe what you see on internet for restaurant hours. Every place listed as closed was actually open. Just call ahead.
A hidden gem! This house was fantastic, and the hosts were kind and very quick to respond. The space is more than adequate for our family of five (three of which are older teens). The beds were comfortable, the showers had decent pressure. We all enjoyed the hot tub and backyard immensely. There's of course plenty of shade, so even the warmer days didn't feel uncomfortable in the house or in the backyard! We were happy to find many condiments and other food items. We had forgotten pancake mix and used theirs, replacing it and then replacing the syrup, too. I appreciated the little extras, and the many towels, too! We'd happily stay here again. I can't recommend this place enough. Do it and sit on the back porch while keeping an eye out for deer. We saw them daily! Then enjoy the creek, the beautiful sounds and watch for frogs and other critters!

About the host
Hosted by Sarah Schaack
My family and I love to hike, ski, and make music, and Mt Hood is our favorite place to do all of this! We also love green spaces, bird calls, and butterflies, and the Hideaway, as we like to call it, provides us with a truly lovely opportunity to enjoy the forest and river. We are also music lovers (so there are musical instruments if you, too, like to pick up a guitar or banjo), puzzlers (same-- we have about a dozen at the house from kid-friendly to multi-day affairs), and we like to cook (enjoy communal meals around the dining room table, inside or out!)
Why they chose this property
For us, this house has some special qualities. Having the seasonal creek run right by the house connects it to the mighty Salmon River, which is within ear shot and walking distance. As parents of a young child, we really love that the house feels far from the city, but isn't far from a grocery store! We love the quiet, of course, but we also love the way the sun rises in the valley and how bright the stars are at night. And finally-- we love sharing the house with others! It might sound cheesy, but sharing the beauty of Mt Hood just multiplies our enjoyment, we hope you get that sense if you come stay!
What makes this property unique
The proximity to the national forest and ski slopes is key, of course, but we also appreciate that it is on a deadend "street" (beware when driving-- the road is dirt, and very bumpy, especially after rain), so the house is very quiet with no traffic noise (the upstream neighbors do have chickens, so you might hear them, but there is no rooster, thankfully!) We love that we can walk to the National Forest whenever we want (closest trailhead is the Bonanza Trail, about a15 min walk from the front door!) and over to the Salmon River (about 8 min to the nearest bridge overlook, on foot) to see the river each evening either before or after dinner.
