About this property

Terlingua Casita de Chiles Barndominium

A beautiful property, with established "Premier Hosts" - pictures have been updated!
Enjoy a 2 bedroom, 2 bath upstairs barndominium apartment on 107 acres of pristine Desert wilderness, nestled in a valley between awe-inspiring mountains. Witness the most amazing sunrises, sunsets and star shows anywhere! See the Milky Way in all it's glory in our "dark skies" territory and from the brand new 6-person hot tub ("hot" in the winter - a "cooling pool" in the summer - you adjust the temperature to meet your preferences).

This location (45 min from BBNP) allows the enjoyment of a huge assortment of wildlife viewing - migratory birds of all colors, shapes and forms, dove, quail, ravens, red-tail hawks, mule deer, javelina, rabbits, fox, wolves, and even an occasional black bear, bobcat or mountain lion. In addition to the wildlife, visitors have enjoyed marveling at the wide and diverse array of plant and cactus life!

Another bonus is that this location provides miles of primitive walking/hiking/biking/ATV opportunities. Be sure and inquire about special excursions offered by the hosts.

If visitors choose to fly-in, to the nearby landing strip, the hosts will gladly assist with transportation (please inquire ahead-of-time).

The apartment is rustically furnished with brand new custom ordered furnishings, including queen-size beds/mattresses. Also, found in the apartment is a TV in each bedroom and living room, on-site Fiber Optic 5G WIFI, outside lounging furniture on a viewing deck as well as on the ground floor patio. A full-size stove/oven, refrigerator, counter-top ice maker, microwave, filtered drinking water, coffee pot, dishes, pots & pans, linens, towels, washer & dryer (bring your own laundry soap) and an outdoor gas grill are all provided. Tabletop heater and a fire pit are also available to ensure the enjoyment of the outdoors, even on cooler evenings. The apartment comes equipped with a sophisticated mini-split heating and air conditioning system as well as a back-up generator for any unexpected power outage.

The apartment, currently, sleeps 4 but can sleep 6 with the use of 2 new, large, heavy-duty cots with thick cot mattresses, upon request. In addition, if additional space is needed for additional guests, the hosts' original property is also available near by - an RV that can accommodate 4 more guests (please inquire).

The hosts live near, but a bit removed, on the acreage, and are readily available for information/advice and/or socialization (previous guests have remarked how much they enjoyed "happy hour" on the porch with the hosts!) and if any need arises.

The hosts continue to take great pains to insure that our facilities meet and exceed recommended sanitation guidelines.

Please be aware that this is a non-smoking property (due to allergies - both inside and outside) and that no pets are allowed (for your pet's safety). There is a $250 fine for the violation of either of these policies.

Absolutely no hunting or discharge of firearms allowed.

Area attractions include but are not limited to: Big Bend National Park (be sure and see the Chisos Basin, the Boquillas Overlook, the Hot Springs, the Dinosaur Exhibit, Santa Elena Canyon and river tours among others), Big Band Ranch State Park (be sure and enjoy the Hoo Doo's and Closed Canyon Trails), the Terlingua Ghost Town (enjoy dinner at the famous Starlight Theatre, LaKiva, DB's Rustic Iron BarBQ or Long Draw Pizza restaurants), the Lajitas Golf Resort (enjoy a prickly pear margarita at the Thirsty Goat Saloon), the "River Road" following alongside the Rio Grande River (Highway 170 - considered one of the top 10 scenic drives in America) and the casual and quaint, local Bad Rabbit cafe' located just 1 mile away.

Also, and closer to home you'll find the Terlingua Ranch Headquarters office (they sell ice, snacks and trinkets), the crystal clear, cool and refreshing swimming pool and bath house.

Note that the hosts value and support military personnel, veterans and first responders by offering a 10% discount on the nightly rate. This discount is offered only when the qualifying person is present (please notify hosts, at time of booking, and be prepared to present ID card). A 10% discount is also provided to returning guests (please remind hosts, at time of booking, that you've been with us before).

We will text you specific driving instructions to the property just prior to your arrival but please be aware that the last 3 miles is a well maintained gravel road.

Highly communicative hosts who warmly welcomed us to the barndo. You’re not roughing it here. The sunsets were great, and the wildlife will practically touch you. We enjoyed the hot tub both nights.

We enjoyed our stay here. The barndo was just right for the three of us. We had a place to prepare food and two bathrooms which is very important when you have three women together. The trek to the place was entertaining but we were warned ahead that it was dirt roads so we were not surprised. We loved all the wildlife we seen. We even seen javelinas on the way out! Mark educated us about flora which we very much enjoyed. Michelle and churo were nice as well.

What a special place and more importantly, what special people. Casa de Chiles is a well appointed piece of heaven in the middle of the desert. Beautiful sunrises, sunsets, and night skies only make things better. Great launching point for anything Big Bend has to offer. Michelle and Mark are incredible hosts that go above and beyond all expectations. Totally grateful for a wonderful stay and experience. Gracias.

We recently visited Big Bend National Park and stayed here, and honestly, the experience was incredible. From the moment we arrived, the energy of the place felt welcoming and calm—like walking into a real home. The barndominium was extremely well stocked with essentials, thoughtfully set up, and genuinely comfortable. The views were beautiful, and the amenities were amazing—hot tub, grill, and everything you could possibly need right there. It’s about an hour and a half from Big Bend National Park and roughly 45 minutes from Terlingua, which made it a perfect location.Everything was easy and self-explanatory, and it was even decorated for Christmas, which made our stay extra special since we were there with family and little kids. It added such a magical touch to the trip.Overall, it was an amazing experience, and I truly couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay.
The chrismas decor was there, we just brought our gifts. It felt like we never left home.

House was very clean, hot tub water we couldn't get warm but we didn't ask for help. I really liked the house and hostess but felt it was a bit far from the national park. I didn't realize I was going have go down a dirt road to get to the house.

If you’re looking for an off the beaten path getaway, this place is for you. It’s quite remote, but well worth the drive. The hosts are very welcoming and friendly, and they’ll show you everything you need to know when you check in. The place is clean and has good WiFi. The hot tub is exactly what you need after a long day hiking at Big Bend and the stars at night are beautiful. About the host

Hosted by Mark or Michelle Chiles

Host profile image
Mark and Michelle live full-time on the 107 acre property. Living on property allows us the distinct advantage that enables us to immediately assist with any problems or questions that may arise. Mark has lived in Texas his entire life, growing up mainly in the San Antonio South Texas areas. Mark attended Texas A&M University and has extensive experience in construction, farming, ranching and the wilderness. Michelle is a "military brat" and preacher's daughter so considers herself "doubly dysfunctional" - LOL! Michelle attended Abilene Christian University and has extensive wilderness experience.

Why they chose this property

Mark began traveling to and visiting the Big Bend/Terlingua Ranch area at the age of 11 with his parents. Since his parents had a fondness for the area, Mark was able to explore and learn to appreciate it too - and became more and more fond of it as the years went by. As time has gone by, Mark has realized that a lot of people have no idea what is out here. Since they both share a passion for the beauty of the Big Bend area, Mark and Michelle have formed a great partnership and take great pleasure in sharing this passion with others. They hope you'll enjoy it as much as they do!

What makes this property unique

Since Mark and Michelle have, also, traveled extensively they have made sure that their property is everything that they would want/need, if it were for them. It is their goal to make sure that each and every guest feels immediately "at home" and "part of the family". Besides the ample amenities, of the apartment, there are other amenities/attractions close by: swimming pool, cafe', laundry facility, and the Terlingua Ranch management office. This property location also provides a great jumping off spot for all that the Big Bend region has to offer. Yet, it affords visitors tranquil and beautiful evenings for relaxing and star gazing.
