Architect / artist converted 17th C farmhouse in World Heritage Site
IMPORTANT INFORMATION The Cottage (3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms) accommodates maximum 6 people. We do not allow for extra guests. Casa do Celeiro was discovered by its architect / artist owners in 1980. It was a ruin which had been the stable/barn of a 'quinta'(manor house and farm). The main attractions of the site were its views of the Serra and the sea and its seclusion and intimacy due to being a courtyard built into a hill. The house today has the same basic format but is now suitable for self-catering groups of up to 6 plus baby. There is an 8m dia. pool at the top of the property and a stone terrace with pergola and large garden in front of the Cottage. The Cottage has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large sit-in conservatory on the upper level with view to a private courtyard. The kitchen / living room are on the ground floor. The house is comfortably furnished and although not luxurious it is charming and comfortable. The tranquil setting, fabulous views of sea and hills and close proximity to Almoçageme the local village make this property a magnificent retreat. Winter months in Sintra are known for their coolness and dampness and our house although equipped with storage heaters in bedrooms and living room as well as an effective fan assisted woodburning fireplace (living room) may not be ideal for those who are used to underfloor heating or other amenities. We are in a microclimate and humidity can be on the high side from time to time.
Art Courses: The owners live on site in separate quarters. Mary works as an artist and offers short courses from time to time. Guests may be interested in participating in the drawing & painting or etching courses and are encouraged to indicate their interest when booking. Mary is a painter and a printer. Please ask owners for their website for more details / photos of house, courses, and area. Piano: there is an old upright piano (Hoffmann) in the Cottage living room which although slightly out of tune and with worn keys is quite ok for sight reading and composing but not for recitals.
Owners' Background: Alan who is British worked as an architect in London at BDP (Building Design Partnership). He qualified at the AA (Architectural Association). When he moved to Portugal he opened an architectural office in Cascais in 1980. He retired in 1992. Many of his watercolour paintings are in the Cottage as well as his stainless steel sculptures on the grounds. Sadly, Alan passed away in early 2024. Mary, American, also worked as an architect, having completed her diploma at the Central London Poly (now Westminster College). She also has degrees in Art History, International Education and painting and etching. She was head of the Art Department at St. Julian's School in Lisbon and runs art workshops in her studio from time to time. She exhibits her work regularly.
Golf, tennis, beaches: Several golf courses within 20 minute drive. Beloura is considered the best golf course for tourists as it has a more open and friendly atmosphere. Tennis and water sports within 10 minutes. 3 beaches within 5-10 minutes drive: Praias (beach) das Maças, Adraga and Grande all have restaurants and cafes on waterfront / Guincho Beach (15 minutes drive) has international surfing / wind surfing and excellent up market restaurants / can recommend a surf school
A Biker’s Paradise One of the major advantages of the positioning of our house is that it is right in the Serra de Sintra with splendid views up and down the Lisbon coast. For a mountain biker this is very advantageous as we are at the entrance of one the mountain roads so you can ride directly into the Serra. From this road there are many dirt paths to take you deeper into the Serra. A dog and cat on the premises.
Check in: As I live in a separate wing of the property I like to greet guests and explain all the details personally. I am available if necessary but otherwise like to give the guests their privacy.

We enjoyed our stay at the villa! The property is beautiful and the pool has the best views of Portugal and the sea. Our host Mary was very responsive, and her artwork and eclectic style make the place very special. We really appreciated the quiet location that was so close to the city and other attractions but offered a welcome respite for the chaos of the city. So lose to great restaurants and coffee shops, Sintra and the sea. A perfect getaway!
Charming property with an incredible pool and stunning views just minutes from exceptional beaches like Praia da Adraga (which also has an awesome restaurant). The host was super helpful, and the kitchen was well stocked with the basics.
Very charming house and very friendly owner. We also enjoyed a art workshop. The house is relatively old and a little musty. It’s part of the experience
Excellent and professional accomdation with mountain views and a swimming pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. A big kitchen and a spacious living room. I will definitely want to return for a longer stay.
Mary is a great host. We really enjoyed our stay there. Especially the view over the ocean, the pool and the beautiful nature around the house are some of the highlights that must be mentioned. We would come back there any time.
Mary was an incredible host and the property was amazing! An oasis in a quaint village with beautiful vistas, an amazing pool and everything you could ask for for a comfortable stay. The cottage itself was very roomy and contained amazing art work created by Mary and her husband. It was just the perfect location to explore the Sintra, the many beaches close by and many other points of interest too many to mention. We had such a wonderful time, we are planning on visiting again! Thank you Mary!
We had a lovely week here as a family with two boys (11 & 9). The pool is large and deep with great views both from there and from the outdoor table at the front of the house - a great spot for lazy days without needing to go out. There's great walking in the hills behind the house and the location is near plenty of interesting places. Mary is a very welcoming host and had loads of good suggestions for us. We'd definitely recommend here for others - families or couples.
We had a wonderful week. The house has so much to offer. Wondeful beds. There are beautiful paintings everywhere, made by Maru and her husband. Mary is a lovely hostess. She can give you a lot of tips. The swimmingpool is wonderfully private. This location is highly recommended.
Had an amazing time in this historic and artistic home. Beautiful ocean views, gardens, and pool. Great for relaxing afternoons and watching shooting stars at night. There are many beaches, villages, and monuments within a 15 km radius. We stayed for two weeks and still didn't see everything! Mary is a very welcoming host and keen to share her love of the arts. Highly recommend this property for families!
Spent a fabulous 2 weeks at Mary's property. The house is perfectly located to explore the area and had everything we needed. The photos don't do the place justice. Mary is the perfect host, she readily answered all of our questions (we chose to communicate by WhatsApp) but otherwise left us to it. The way the house is configured lends itself to families as well as couples travelling together.

Lovely spacious house on a great spot
We rented the house for a week. First we stayed with 4 people, later on 2 people joined us so we stayed with 6. It's a spacious house with multi levels outside. The view from the terrace on front, looking on the Atlantic ocean, is lovely. The garden up front is peacebringing. At the back there are several terraces and the swimminpool. Nice round pool with fresh water. We used it every day. The location is great to discover the middle part of portugal. We rented a car and visited Lissabon twice, Cascais twice and Sintra once. We drove to the supermarket on daily basis to get fresh fruit, bread etc. just 5 minutes by car. Well, our conclusion: we give this villa 5 starts at least. Great time! Mary and Allen, thanks for the hospitality and privicy. All the best and maybe we'll meet again.
Located up on a high hill with jaw dropping views of the ocean, this is a lovely rustic cottage that was a farmer’s home in times past. Mary and her husband restored the property 40 years ago and graciously rent the cottage which is next to their home. If you want a traditional home in the hills of Sintra, this is for you. If you need sleek and modern, keep looking. The cottage is about an hour drive from Lisbon airport, up a narrow winding (beautiful) road and less than 30 minutes from the town in Sintra. There are numerous beaches a short drive from the house. The cottage has two bedrooms upstairs (2 single beds each) with a shared bathroom and sunroom. The ground floor has a well stocked country kitchen and small sitting area with a piano, lots of books and games. There is a washing machine and dishwasher. Down about 2 stairs from the kitchen is a bedroom (Queen) with a bathroom. The surrounding woods are beautiful with a small hiking path to the summit. We loved the nearby town of Cascais—beaches food shopping wild coastline. Excellent communication with the owners.

Wonderful stay in an idyllic retreat
We (two adults and two children, age 8 and 9) just returned from a nearly 2 week stay in Mary and Alan's beautiful home. The setting is picture-perfect and the photos do not adequately capture the gorgeous landscaping and special setting: it is high up on a hill (very steep driveway!) with spectacular views of the ocean from virtually every window. Sunsets are incredible, and we often enjoyed a glass of wine on the outside terrace (under a grape arbor) while watching them. The aerial photo gives a sense of the terraced quality of the property. Our boys particularly liked the garden/yard level (first floor of the house with the outdoor terrace) where they played with the sweet dog Alma. They also loved the daily swims in the pool (third level) -- the pool and gardens surrounding it are lovely and this level has spectacular views as well.
The house is comfortable and has all amenities needed and was very clean. Mary thoughtfully stocked the kitchen with basics before our arrival. She was incredibly helpful and responsive throughout our stay with great suggestions and ideas. We also arranged for Mary to give a private drawing lesson to our sons, and we'll treasure the drawings they did. Mary's artwork adorns the house, and we purchased a beautiful print of the mountains to remind us of our stay.
The location is incredibly well situated for getting to beaches, exploring Sintra and Cascais (we went back to both a few times). Colares and Almocageme are perfect small towns for basics -- several good bars and restaurants, good grocery stores (don't let the size of the one in Almocageme fool you -- it's well priced and stocked!). One of our favorite meals at home included the delicious grilled chicken (available on the main square in Almocageme or next to the grocery store in Colares.) And of course lots of vino verdhe! The farmer's market in Almocageme was terrific as well (Saturday / Sunday). We hiked on the trail that begins on the property and while the first part of the passage is fairly overgrown, it opens up to a nice trail that is shaded and offers a lovely walk for the whole family.
A friend came for the last week and stayed in the downstairs bedroom (of the main cottage, not the annex). It is a private set up and quite separate from the upstairs bedrooms where we stayed.
We've stayed in many rental homes and this one is quite special -- both the place and the lovely host. We can't recommend it more!
