About this property

Captain's Quarters

Solo individuals, couples and small families (couple w/up to 2 children) will enjoy a sensual bedroom suite with a comfy queen size bed, as well as a cozy living space with sofabed (queen size), a plush chair, a large ottoman, a flat screen Smart TV, a work/eating space, kitchen, an adjoining full bathroom and a sunny patio with a cafe table and chairs for three - perfect for enjoying morning coffee or an evening beverage.

All wood finishings and counters have been artfully hand crafted by using reclaimed local beetle-kill wood. The craftsman who built this cottage came from generations of boat builders and this skill can be recognized from the boat cabin, galley and head feel of the place. Hence, we named this space "The Captain's Quarters".

The Captains Quarters are located at the back of a property that is shared with the owners home and backyard. Guests have access to the shared backyard space and have the use of a carport that small cars can access from the back alley. Vegetation and blinds provide a lot of privacy for The Captain's Quarters.

The space is ideal for people visiting the University due to its nearby proximity and available parking.

Amazing
The property is so amazing and far better than the pictures. The owners were very flexible and kind. My daughter and I went for a shopping weekend. We fell in love as soon as we walked through the door. I will continue to stay there whenever possible.

Excellent!
Very responsive host, and a super cool space to stay in. We stayed in the dead of winter and thought we might freeze but the place is very cozy and EVERYTHING is in its place and is neat organized and looks like it was hand-made. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Unique property
A unique and interesting property in the University District very convenient for visiting family in the area. Everything one needs is within reach; it is a well planned and creatively organized spaced quiet. The bedroom is tight, probably not practical for larger people, but the bed is comfortable. We would stay here again.

About the host

Host profile image
I own and manage vacation and retreat accommodations, farm stays and destination experiences in Northwest Montana. Prior to my family’s relocation to Montana, I enjoyed a Public Health career planning, implementing and evaluating a variety of prevention programs in Santa Barbara. I presently work from home, managing my family’s household, property, livestock animals, and our retreat and vacation accommodations. I love to create the perfect space for groups, families, couples, and individuals to break away from their ordinary lives to reconnect with each other and their source of inspiration on our wooded property against the Swan Mountains and in our newly bought property in Missoula. I also love to write and have recently retooled my public health writing skills to write creative non-fiction. I particularly enjoy writing about the natural world and about climate, social and personal change. I am currently working on a memoir that weaves these themes together. When not working or at school, my partner, son and I love to go out to eat delicious food, prepare meals together at home, watch good movies or TV series, play board/card games, kayak, bike, ski, and swim. We love to travel for soccer tournaments, to visit with extended family, and attend writing retreats.

Why they chose this property

We recently purchased this property to live in during the school year, while our son attends Sussex School here in Montana. We were particularly drawn to Missoula’s historical and desirable centrally situated University District. Old, giant trees and a mix of mansion like homes and small bungalows offer a storybook setting. Students, professors and long-time residents make this neighborhood a melting pot and known for being quiet, safe, and family friendly. Right around the corner is the fun filled Bonner Park with tennis and basketball courts, a dug-out, a concert stage, a playground, a water deck, and plenty of grassy space. In the summers, guests will enjoy lovely musical performances in this park every week! Just blocks away is the University of Montana and Mount Sentinel’s hiking trailhead. Heading in the other direction there's the popular hip-strip and river trail and just across the bridge is downtown Missoula with its plethora or restaurants, bars, breweries, coffee houses, music venues, playhouses, boutiques, open air markets, festivals and more. Most everything is within walking and biking distances!

Very bike friendly streets and bike paths along the river make this area ideal for those who prefer biking as their mode of transportation and recreation. This home is close to free public transit. Also its proximity to a local market, eatery, bakery and parks throughout safe neighborhoods make walking an option as well.

Whether it’s a football game or a concert, living in this neighborhood puts you right in the center of it all. Old, giant trees and big beautiful homes offer a storybook setting. Students, professors and long-time residents make this neighborhood the melting pot of the community.

Missoula offers a unique "nature meets culture" feel and we've come to love it for its easy-going outdoorsy life with all the creature comforts of a hip University metropolitan city.
