Location description: Adelboden - there are numerous legends about how the spa resort in the western Bernese Oberland got its illustrious name. There has never been a consensus, but there is agreement that the name fits: The valley, situated at 1,350 metres above sea level and with good transport links, is wide, lovely and very sunny - the mountains do not rise up in front of you, but rather you can enjoy them from a certain distance. Even the first guests appreciated this tranquillity. Adelboden was a "much-visited place for those in need of relaxation and those suffering from nervousness", according to a travel guide published in 1898. Of course, the Engstligental valley was already settled before its tourist era. In the late Middle Ages, settlers from the Alemannic villages moved into the wilderness of the valley. The village church, whose fresco paintings and stained glass windows by the famous Swiss artist Augusto Giacometti are considered particularly worth seeing, dates back to 1433. A meaningful motto on the wall encourages the faithful: "Let us not sleep like the others." Today, Adelboden is a place for both those who want to linger and those who want to be active: 56 transport facilities (185 km of ski slopes, 24.5 km of cross-country ski trails, an extensive network of hiking trails) attract nature lovers to the mountains, for example to the beautiful and mystical Engstligenalp, which was included in the Federal Archives of Cultural Landscapes of National Importance in 1996. For mountaineers, the high plateau is the starting point for numerous spectacular tours; those who linger can enjoy bizarre rock formations, lush carpets of flowers and bubbling water on the 2.5 km wheelchair-accessible circular trail - a sensual experience which, in combination with the rediscovered stimulating and high-altitude climate, is also known as "alpine wellness". The two waterfalls have been a nature reserve since 1948. Water has always been a central element at the end of the Engstligen Valley. The "rocky Adelbodner", a mineral water extremely rich in calcium and magnesium, is drawn from the Oeybad spring. Adelboden should not be compared with glamorous Swiss health resorts. If you're in the mood for sparkling champagne, you've come to the wrong place. With its FIS World Cup ski race, the Vogellisi mountain race, the Adelboden cross-country night, the Alte Taverne as a stronghold of the Swiss music scene, etc., Adelboden offers many spectacular highlights with great media appeal. But there's no such thing as chic and airs and graces here. Everything is more sedate, normal and informal. Perhaps also because the residents themselves are not extras. Tourism offers them a secure livelihood and the Alpenarena is an indispensable place to play and exercise. Since the 1960s, sport-loving Adelboden has regularly provided athletes for the international ski circuit. Conversely, there is talk of the proverbial "Adelboden cosiness and serenity", which guests appreciate.
