About this property
Sula Mountain Retreat with Hot Tub and Fun-filled Shop
The property is situated on the upper East Fork of the Bitterroot River. Mountains surround the area, the river is a few minute walk away, and wildlife is everywhere. While there are neighbors, it is a remote location. There is so much to do right outside the door and even more adventures with a little driving.
In the immediate area there is limitless fishing, hiking, backpacking, bike riding, ATV roads and trails, and in the winter, some of the best snowmobiling. The area is considered some of the best hunting in the world.
Using the property as a jumping off point you can drive to hot springs, skiing at Lost Trail, Camp Sula (food, drink and supplies), the great little town of Darby with most everything you might need. A day trip can take you to the Battle of Bighole National Park, the town of Wisdom, and the Jackson Hotsprings.
The two bedroom, one bath main cabin is idyllic with a rustic yet elegant feel both inside and out. The open floor plan downstairs provides a relaxing space for family and friends to cook and socialize.
The upstairs features two bedrooms and a lofted sleeping area with perfect cabin vibe for great sleeping and napping.
The cabin is stocked with a library of books, movies and games. While there is no cell service there is WiFi with limited streaming. The kitchen has everything you need for whipping up some awesome grub.
Outside there are old growth ponderosa pine and fir trees. Enjoy the hot tub for the always chilly mornings and evenings. There is a private courtyard with a fire area that is perfect for those evening fires and plenty of space to park a self-contained RV or camper.
Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and kept on the property. Please be considerate of others. Dog owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dog both inside and out. An additional nightly fee of $40 will be applied to guests bringing a dog. Limit of two dogs.
Finally, the shop area. It is a 24x48 shop that is full of fun. It includes a mini basketball court, a regulation height basketball hoop, a high quality ping-pong table, and a foosball table. It is perfect for the kids or as an open gathering space for the adults.
At a minimum, the main cabin sleeps six.

About the host
Your host
We began developing this property in 2005. We started with a small cabin and an outhouse. Over the years we added infracstructure, built the main cabin, and later the shop. We hired local contractors to help us but we designed and built the structures from the bottom of up with our own four hands!
In building the main cabin, we focused on a balance of affordabilty and efficiency. In the winter, the woodstove keeps the cabin nice and warm and in the summer, AC is not even needed. If it is in the 90s, we might use a fan at night. A big part of the efficiency is the 12 inches of insulation in the ceiling and an insulated mono-slab on which the cabin is built. To put it in perspective, many people in the area burn 10-12 cords of wood (that is a lot of wood--like, a full-size pick up loaded and stacked four feet high, 10-12 times). We burned 2-3 cords per year and we were always very comfortable.
For seven years we raised out children here. It was an idyllic situation where we learned a lot about living in a wilderness area and learning to enjoy the winters which are distinctly different than even seven miles down the East Fork Road. It truly is a winter wonderland.
As our kids got older and more involved in sports and music, the distance to the bus stop (14 miles) and to school (around 35 miles) started to be more and more challenging. We decided life would be a lot easier if we had a place in town. Life has been easier, but we are fortunated to be able to keep this property that will forever be what our kids consider home.
On the property you will see some remnants of our lifestyle. We raised chickens and pigs for a while (to be clear, there are not chicken and pigs on the property now) and purchases and used a sawmill to produce some of our building materials. Living a life where we were more dependent on ourselves was highly rewarding and, someday, we might be able to it all again.
We love to share out story. Just ask if you would like more details.
Why they chose this property
The property can best be described as, "cozy." "Rustic" also fits but that implies that maybe is is not super nice. Everything looks rustic, but everything is super nice and some might even say, elegant.
The shop is probably what makes the property the most unique vacational rental around. You can just hang out in their and enjoy the wide open space. Or, you and your family can enjoy a game of ping-pong or basketball. For the kids, the mini, full court basket court is about the coolest thing ever. We've burned off a lot of meals playing family basketball games. If you are a couple, maybe you haven't shot hoops in years. Give it a try on the shortened hoops or on that full size hoop (it seems taller, but it is regulation height). It really is a fun to way to excersize.
