Cottontail Creek Ranch started a land conservation fund as of July 1, 2009, whereby guests will be asked to make a charitable donation to the fund in the amount of at least 2% of the rental rate. Cottontail Creek Ranch guests have overwhelmingly exclaimed at their enjoyment of the wide open spaces and working agricultural landscapes during their visits and hope the area will retain this magical quality for their return visits. The creation of this fund gives our guests and others an ongoing opportunity to be part of conserving the natural beauty of the area. A directed giving fund has been established with the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation whereby guests make their donations to a specific earmarked fund called the SLO County Tourism Land Conservation Fund. In turn, the Community Foundation will make grants as directed by Roger and Susan Lyon to non-profit land trusts or public agencies for land conservation projects in San Luis Obispo County. Initially, planned grant recipients from the fund are the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, the California Rangeland Trust, the American Land Conservancy and the Cayucos Land Conservancy. Each of these land trusts has a proven track record in this County.

Why 2%?
2% was the most obvious number because guests staying in all of SLO county except for this north rural area are charged in addition to the 10.5% Bed tax, a 2% BID (Business Improvement District assessment for marketing). Great stay !

The Cottontail Creek Ranch was everything it advertised. From the beautiful surroundings, to the comfort of the home and spaciousness of the rooms the entire family have a great time. Pool, tennis courts, basketball court and even a tether all set -up there was something for everyone. The hostess was wonderful, always available to answer any questions and was extremely helpful in finding things for us to do.

Beautiful backdrop for a family reunion

Our extended family (11 adults, 8 kids) gathered at Cottontail Creek Ranch for a week-long reunion in August. The location is spectacular, tucked up in a canyon with sweeping views of the hills. The weather was fabulous (especially for heat-weary travelers from all around the country)--sunny during the day, but not hot, and cooling off overnight with the ocean breeze. The home was great for our group, with enough bedrooms and bathrooms that families didn't have to share. And an open living space that allowed all to be part of the festivities but also offered nooks and crannies for those who wanted alone time. Susan was wonderful host, paying attention to every little detail to make our stay enjoyable. Fresh oranges and avocados (in season), rides to the pond for those who couldn't hike, attentive to our needs for the pool temperature or other activities. It was a very memorable reunion and we very much hope to be back again in the future!

The Best Stay Ever

Cottontail Creek was the best stay ever! We are a group of 14 70+ year old women who have been getting together for a week each year for over 20 years. From the first sighting of the property to the final day there, we had an amazing time. Everything was so clean and fresh. Susan even had the table set for our birthday dinner! We spent a glorious week enjoying the vast grounds and the heated pool. It was an incredible time and we plan to come back in April to enjoy the Spring.

Family Reunion Hotspot

After months of trying to arrange a family reunion, we found this listing, and it rose to the occasion! For kids, adults, grandparents, great-grandparents, cousins.. etc. this amazing property kept everyone engaged! Kitchen cooking for a large group, pool time, tennis and pickle ball, easy beach access, wonderful hiking trails to watch the sunset, and the peaceful mornings as the sun rose to greet us was spectacular. Susan was a wonderful host and always open to providing local insight and ways to experience this huge piece of property. We had a ball and hope to return!

A Treasure

There is so much history, rustic charm and wonder to this place. After playing in the playroom, the tennis courts, swimming in the pool and tossing the bocce balls around, our grandkids (ages 1-5) fell into bed with exhaustion each night. We had some truly amazing family time at the Ranch. While it's quite an investment to stay there, we loved every minute. Susan was attentive and clear on all fronts. Great host.

The Cottontail Creek Ranch was everything the property claimed to be and more. Couldn't reccomend the place more... The ranch staff, manager and owner couldn't be any kinder, hospitable or friendly... we even received homemade cookies! The vistas start your day with such beauty and awe as you sit and enjoy your coffee from anyone of the numerous spots on the property you can enjoy. Enjoy your family, friends or work or church retreat getaway!!!

Fabulous Ranch Home

This home was perfect for our party of 16 (6 children and 10 adults). The views of the countryside and ranch were amazing. We enjoyed a little hiking in between the rain showers. Even with a full schedule of events planned in Morro Bay and Cambria, we had the luxury of having a place to come together as a family under one roof. The grandchildren loved the lofts and the space to play in, as well as listening to the frogs croaking in the creek and the rooster crowing. The adults appreciated their own rooms with private baths and the amenities of home. Thank you to the host, Susan, for welcoming us with fresh oranges and avocados along with the beautifully set dining table for our family.

Cottontail Creek Ranch

It was the perfect spot for our family to gather together in celebration of Ted's BIG birthday. The ranch is so beautiful with such picturesque landscape and vistas. The house interior is appointed attractively and has a warm feeling. The kitchen and dining area worked well for fourteen people. We were blessed with fabulous weather which meant the pool, spa, badminton, fire pit, and hikes were enjoyed by all! We look forward to a return visit to Cottontail Creek Ranch!

A little slice of Heaven.

We could not have been more pleased with our stay. We were a group of 5 families with kids aged 4-15, (We are a "cover pod"). There was something for everyone. The location is gorgeous and so relaxing. Susan could not have been a more gracious host. You can take several hikes in the area, go fishing at the pond or just lounge by the pool all day. Our stay has been during COVID so we didn't venture off of the property but honestly we had no need or desire to. We were able to buy some amazing meats from her for our arrival and she also provides (for a cost) the freshest eggs you could ever want. Overall our mini vacation could not have been better. We will absolutely return again! Not soon enough!! Thank you Susan for everything!!

Attention to Detail

Our family gathering included juniors and seniors (ages 2-78). There was plenty to do on the property to keep busy without ever having to leave: amazing lap pool, spa, hike to pond, fishing at the pond, running trails, tennis and basketball court, bocce ball court, s’mores around the fire pit… The kitchen is ready for large groups with 2 dishwashers, double convection oven, and 2 fridges (one in casita). We had wonderful family dinners around the table that seated all 18 of us (plus a high chair!). The host, Susan, is wonderful. Her attention to detail is amazing: we had fresh cut flowers in the bedrooms, the table was set with fresh flowers, floating candles, water and wine glasses and cloth napkins awaiting our first meal. There is a beautiful history at this ranch. We made some wonderful memories! We will be back!

Fantastic location and wonderful host

The description of the property is spot on. However, Susan's warm generous spirit sets this property apart from all others that we have rented. We would highly recommend the CTC Ranch and commend the Cayucos Land Conservency. If it were not for work, we would return in a heart beat. Short list of the highlights: 12-15 person fire pit for smores' and more, using a "Santa Maria" type grill for the first time and the food tasted fantastic using oak wood, hiking to the fishing pond and watch the kids' excitement of catch and releasing fish with help from a neighbor, late afternoon on the veranda and listening to the cows, feeding chickens and last but not least..the swimming pool. Another insight....the kids did not pick up an ipad for most of the time and played outdoors.

Perfect Getaway!

We had 15 guys getting away for a bachelor party.... and this place was perfect for our group. We did not want the typical Vegas trip, but wanted to be able to spend quality time with a close group of guys. We hardly left the house and pool area, and enjoyed every moment. The setup/design of the home was very unique and fitting as there are multiple areas that accommodate groups of people for "hanging out". We would have 4 to 5 groups of people in different places at any given time, (house hot tub, pool/pool house hot tub, fire pit, living room with fireplace) and wouldn't even know that the others were even there. The landscape was breathtaking with rolling green hills. Unfortunately, we never made time to do the ridge tour with Susan, but will have to do it next time. Great hospitality, and great accommodations. Cottontail Creek Ranch is one of a kind! Thanks for everything Lyons!

CTC Company Retreat

Our stay at the ranch was truly unforgettable. The owner personally greeted me with fresh out of the over cookies and took time to show me around the property step by step. We checked every inch of the house to make sure everything was working and in place. I rented the house for a work strategy meeting that started out over the weekend with our families and morphed into a business meeting. For the family portion we cooked dinner at the house, relaxed, swam, visited, played games then the final day took a wine tour followed by a catered dinner at the house. For the sales meeting we used the more than adequate room that already had screen's, white boards, note pads, etc... Everything we needed. This was followed by another amazing catered dinner and of course fun times around the fire pit. The staff was amazing and treated us like family. We will be planning another trip to CTC Ranch. I hope if you are reading this review you take my word for it, come to CTC ranch you won't regret it. It's got whatever you need trust me.

Perfect for Large Family

We recently enjoyed a long weekend at Cottontail Creek Ranch with our large family. The ranch is absolutely breathtaking and feels very isolated, even though it is only a short drive to nearby towns. Sadly for us, it rained (extremely unusual for this time of year) and we were unable to use many of the outdoor facilities or go too far from the house, but we made the best of it. The house was spacious and we enjoyed the well equipped kitchen with spectacular views. The upstairs lounge with a fireplace was also a favorite spot for us to gather. We did make great use of the outdoor fire pit for roasting marshmallows and the hot tub on the upper deck. Susan was wonderful to deal with prior to our visit and was very welcoming on our arrival. She took some of us for a drive up to the top of the mountain to enjoy the breathtaking views to the ocean. Susan was always on hand if we needed her throughout our stay. Miriam and Jose at the ranch were also amazing and helped make our stay very special. The little ones enjoyed feeding the baby cows and seeing the chickens. All of our guests had a wonderful time and we would love to visit again in sunny weather. Highly recommended!

Wonderful!

There are tweleve of us ladies, we're a Bunco group that has been together for years. We take a weekend trip in February each year. Our criteria is specific, we need at least 6 bedrooms, and 5-6 baths. Comfort is important, we're decades past winging it on couches and standing in line for a bathroom. Susan, and her Cottontail Ranch, provided the perfect experience for our trip. The house was wonderful, with a large, open kitchen, dining, and den area for us to gather. A nice living room, and two large master suites were upstairs. Downstairs three comfortable bedroom/bath situations waited off the den, and another, small bedroom was off the kitchen. There's also quirky lofts, a treasure trove for a house full of kids. And finally, a game room, just outside the back door, with additional sleeping space. Decks surrounded the house, overlooking this beautiful ranch, filled with cows, avocados, and citrus trees. The house and setting itself made the weekend perfect, but what made it remarkable was Susan and her hospitality. The table was lovely, set for all twelve of us when we arrived-- that's never happened in any house I've rented in the past 15 years. Susan, who obviously is proud of her ranch--and rightfully so-- offered to give us a tour of the property, amazing, and so much fun. The trip was full of lovely surprises and the warmest hospitality. We planned on scouting around some, but Cottontail Ranch was so enchanting we ended up staying at 'home', eating in (the kitchen was fully equipped) and playing games. Thanks so much, Susan, for the best girls weekend ever- we will be back!

Slice of heaven!

We had the most unbelievable stay at Cottontail Creek Ranch! The pictures don't do it justice. The home is beautiful and large but also cozy. We had two families of 5 and had plenty of space, we could've had another family or two and still been comfortable. The upstairs loft was perfect for kids, and so many nooks to play in. The kids loved the casita with tons of games (blocks, ping pong, train table, etc.). We didn't need to pack a thing! It felt like our home away from home. There was so much to do and so many amenities that we didn't need to leave for an entire week. The pool was such a great design - long enough to swim laps, shallow end for little ones, and hot tub with sun shade to relax. The pool house was great for storing food/drinks by the pool, plus working out while kids swam. We played badminton, tennis and went fishing in the pond. There was great hiking up to the ridge where you can see the ocean! We also fed the chickens and enjoyed fresh eggs, avocados, oranges and bought meat from the farm. The grill and fire pit were a huge hit - we enjoyed smores and yummy meals everyday. The house had every detail thought of, including a fully stocked kitchen and bar. Susan was hands down the best host we've had! She was very responsive on email and helpful in every way (like tips on food shopping, things to do and helping throughout the week with small things without being intrusive). She had even set the table for us upon entry and had the fireplace, fire pit and grill all ready to go, making it so easy to use them. We felt so lucky to have found the ranch and cannot WAIT to come back!! Thank you for everything, Susan!

Susan, Owen, Ruben and Cat planting new Avocados, 2013.
I have a great family(wonderful grandchildren). They all help out at the ranch and love it as I do. We are lucky to have passionate staff to stand alongside.
I love the central coast and all the possibilities. I love that the ocean is just over the hill. Some days I can smell the sea..and zip down for a coastal run, kayak, or boogie board.
Mostly I love this land and feel honored to have spent my life nurturing it.
What a life.
My husband Roger and I have been lucky enough to live our dream and raise our family here.
Although he has passed we feel his presence everywhere!

Why they chose this property

How did we get started in the Vacation Rental business? Our family had been living on Cottontail Creek Road on the Magetti Ranch since 1977. In 1999 when the adjoining property came on the market. We wanted to expand agriculturally which we immediately did by adding more avocados, more cattle and oranges to the ranch. That left the question, what do we do with this extraordinary Cottontail Creek Ranch home built in 1978? Our goal is sustainability and the vacation rental does that as well as fulfills the home's destiny by entertaining tourists from around the world. The house truly combines luxury and homeyness while the views beckon you outdoors. We feel that Cottontail Creek Ranch is the perfect location for sharing this part of old California with others. The byproduct of this has been meeting wonderful people while connecting them to the land.

What makes this property unique

'So much to Do or NOT, Close to everything the Central Coast has to offer' is what I tell potential guests. If you choose to venture out and leave the ranch the first wine tasting room is 15 minutes away and the beach is 12 minutes the opposite direction. The climate is moderate with a marine influence without a lot of fog and the extreme heat of inland, ' JUST RIGHT'! Staying at the ranch can be restful and quiet or full of activity, your choice. The location of our home makes it easy for our guests to enjoy the great outdoors without leaving the house, the patios and porches. You can also fill your days with hiking, walking and biking the property then take off for some wine tasting and beach activities or drive to Hearst Castle for a tour and the Big Sur Coast. We share any fruit and vegetables that are ready for harvest. We normally have oranges, lemons and limes all year long. Seasonally we have avocados, herbs and artichokes from the edible landscaping. It is a great to live off the land.
