About the host
Hosted by Greta Schuler
Our family began visiting BR and The Toccoa river in 2014 when a friend invited us to stay with her parents who own the last cabin on The Toccoa River before it reaches Lake Blue Ridge. We were amazed that only 90 miles from Atlanta and we felt like we were in Colorado. It was magical with the trees and the winding road leading the cabin. I was in love with the town of BR and the fellow owners on Trout Lane. During that wknd getaway, we were determined to find a property on this stretch of the river which is surrounded by national forest. The challenge was there only 10 lots and the homes had been passed down for generations to family members. After several trips over a few years, the opportunity came in 2016 when a family decided to sell their cabin as it need a lot of TLC & renovations. I will never forget driving to BR meeting the family with my husband and son. We were so blessed that they thought of us and allowed us to buy directly from them. Immediately after the closing, we went back to the cabin and began pulling up the carpet in the bedrooms and cutting down the many overgrown bushes and trees that covered the home. Over the next 24 months, we underwent a major renovation taking the cabin to the studs to replace plumbing and electric as the original cabin (back of home) was built in the 1960s with an addition completed in the 1980s. We made the decision on every piece of wood, stain, stone, door handles, shelves, furniture and blankets. Our son was only 4 and was there with us every step of the way working on the home and deciding on every detail. We have so many memories in the walls of our home on The Toccoa & have spent every Thanksgiving and NYE in our home since the year we purchased the property. Our family will always cherish the memories we have created with the special friends and neighbors on Trout Lane. With some families we have entertained they have also fallen in love with BR and have also purchased homes in the mountains.
Why they chose this property
Set within the Aska Adventure Area and surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Chattahoochee National Forest offering more than a mountain getaway. It is a rare piece of BR history. Established in the 1960s, the property was once part of a children’s summer camp where generations spent their days fishing, swimming, floating the river, and exploring the mountains. When the camp eventually closed, the original owner began dividing and selling a limited number of homesites along the river. After only a few lots were sold, the Federal Govt approached the owner to purchase the remaining acreage for the Tennessee Valley Authority. As a result, the cabin became permanently nestled within hundreds of protected acres surrounding Lake BR & the Toccoa River, creating one of the most private and scenic settings in North Georgia. Completely renovated and thoughtfully updated, the cabin still preserves many of its original details, blending timeless charm with modern comfort. Here, life slows down and families reconnect much like they did generations ago. Days are spent fishing from the riverbank, swimming in the cool mountain waters, floating down the Toccoa, gathering around the firepit, and creating uninterrupted family memories. For outdoor enthusiasts, miles of hiking trails weave through the mountains nearby, while tubing and rafting excursions on the Toccoa River are easily accessible from the property. Guests can also enjoy ziplining adventures, scenic drives and explore the surrounding wilderness. When it’s time to venture into town, the vibrant mountain community of BR is minutes away, offering charming boutiques, local art galleries, exceptional restaurants, craft breweries, and wineries where afternoons can be spent tasting local wines, sampling craft beer, and relaxing picnic-style on beautiful grounds. Whether seeking adventure, relaxation or reconnecting with nature, our home offers an unforgettable experience rich with history, beauty, and adventure.
