About this property
16th century Najac farmhouse
La Cascade is a beautiful farmhouse and gite with heated pool that has been handsomely refurbished and modernised by the owners as their second home. It is located in Najac, officially designated in the list for "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" - the most beautiful villages in France.
With its verdant countryside, rich farmland and rivers running through steep gorges the Averyon is truly spectacular. The history of the region can be seen everywhere with fortified villages (St Cirq Lapopie, Belcastel, Cordes sur Ciel, Laguipe), Cathar castles and medieval towns (Figeac, Villefranche de Rouergue) with bustling markets and local fetes; Albi with its stunning cathedral and Toulouse Lautrec museum, the famous Roquefort cheese caves and new Millau bridge are easily reached. The region holds an impressive total of 8 Michelin Stars across 6 restaurants; and no less than 10 of Les plus beaux villages de France!
The house is located in the traditional hamlet of Mazerolles nestling in the mountains overlooking the medieval village of Najac which is famous throughout France. Part of the house is believed to date from the 1500's and the original beams and stone walls have been retained so it has an authentic rustic ambiance. The main house has four double bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms, a generous kitchen/dining room with a professional double oven gas cooker and an excellent bean to cup coffee machine. The elegant living room has an extensive collection of books, music and films with full access to streaming services. The living room and bedrooms enjoy views of the gardens and the panorama of Les Gorges d'Aveyron. The main house sleeps 10 in bedrooms and can accommodate an additional 4 on sofa beds in the upper barn upon request. On the ground floor of the restored barn the owners have created a self-contained studio gite, which sleeps an additional 2 people. It comprises a large living room / bedroom, an ensuite shower room and a very modern kitchen.
There are lovely rural walks that start directly from the house. Horse-riding, canoeing, rafting and tennis are available nearby, as are organised treks and bike trails throughout the mountainous Najac area. The gardens contain many shady spots where one can simply enjoy a glass of wine whilst listening to the birds or the waterfall. The pool is sun drenched until late afternoon, has a breath-taking view of the Aveyron valley and the Chateau de Mazerolles. Above the house and part of the property is a large wood, home to a great variety of wildlife. In summer the sky is full of migratory birds, bees and butterflies abound, and it is common to see lizards in the gardens and hear owls at night. The grounds include a formal garden, rose beds, a lavender border, many flowering shrubs, and a waterfall from which the house derives its name. There are several areas to relax in the garden or dine al fresco, and we also have an extensive and eclectic library. The large upper floor of the barn hosts a piano, a table tennis area, lounge chairs and table, and fitness equipment (hand and bar weights and an exercise bike). The lower barn contains a portable barbecue and a selected exercise equipment.
The property is always rented in its entirety.
