Where the signal is weak, but the connections are strong…
Feeling overstimulated by everyday noise and constant demands? Family too big for a hotel room? Red Hawk is a quiet, wooded cabin designed for intentional disconnection — a place to unplug, unwind, and reconnect with nature, with others, or with yourself.
Here, the pace slows naturally. Enjoy morning coffee on the screened-in porch while listening to the woods, spend your days reading or exploring nearby trails and scenic roads, and wind down in the evening around the covered outdoor fire pit — roasting s’mores, sharing stories, or perfecting your favorite mountain pie recipe.
Red Hawk is a favorite retreat for families visiting Penn State or Juniata College, longtime friends reconnecting, and professionals seeking a restorative getaway. You’ll be within easy driving distance of Raystown Lake (with public access points including Snyder’s Run and Seven Points), Lincoln Caverns, Trough Creek State Park, and charming local towns — while still feeling far removed from everyday life.
The cabin comfortably sleeps up to 7 guests, with one main-floor bedroom and an upstairs loft. It’s well-suited for those who value space, privacy, and presence — not packed itineraries or constant connectivity.
Many guests tell us their favorite part of staying at Red Hawk is simply staying put: watching wildlife, playing games, enjoying unrushed conversations, and spending a weekend free from constant notifications.

This was a great place for a weekend getaway. Very graciously allowed us to check in early, with even a smore's kit awaiting us. The firepit was the highlight, and there was plenty of room for our dog to explore. Would highly recommend for a weekend getaway.
This property is about 38 minutes south of Penn State campus, and we used it as a getaway to visit our son who is a student there it was perfect for sitting around the fire, eating s’mores, which were kindly provided by the hostess and enjoying family time together highly recommend
Our family enjoyed our weekend away at this lovely cabin. It's rustic but extremely well kept and stocked for all your needs. A really great place to unplug and take in the tranquility of the area.
My family and I really enjoyed staying at this property. The setting is beautiful and secluded, but easily accessible. The cabin was nicely decorated and quite comfortable, and the kitchen was very well equipped. We also loved the large screened-in porch and the fire pit. Heather was a terrific host. We look forward to staying again!
Comfortable cabin in a beautiful setting. We loved catching up on movies we never watched and taking hikes on the quiet roads. Lots of deer to watch. Off the beaten path a bit but plenty of good restaurants within a 15-20 min drive. Would definitely visit again!
My family and I really enjoyed our stay, it is a quiet and private place to unwind, the rental comes nicely equipped with much more than I expected , firewood for the fire pit, corn hole boards, games and much more! If you enjoy the outdoors and rustic surroundings this is a great place to stay. Excellent host who really puts a lot into making you feel at home.
Cute, comfortable, and cozy describes the cabin at Red Hawk. Super clean and very homey feel. Wonderful to not be tempted by technology (cell service 2 miles away for signal) and just enjoy the quiet and peaceful surroundings.
My husband and I had a wonderful weekend at this peaceful retreat nestled in the woods. The cabin was clean, comfortable and very well stocked. We had everything we needed, and so much more provided by the host. The fire pit area is perfect, and with the games, DVDs, and other extras you will not miss being "off the grid." There are other houses/camps nearby, but we only saw 2 cars and a few curious goats all weekend. Wish we could have stayed longer!

The furnishings were very comfortable and almost everything one might desire was provided for the kitchen and for entertainment inside and outside the cabin. Keep in mind that this is an extremely rustic mountainside location! Unpaved roads, no wifi, tv, internet, or cellphone access.
We enjoyed 4 days in this little cabin in the woods and were very sad to leave it. Our host Heather anticipated anything that I could have wanted: a thoroughly equipped kitchen (even had a milkshake blender), a water cooler, games, dvds, flashlights, binoculars, marshmallow skewers...The firepit was fabulous, large, covered, and optional lighting. Then there was the screened in porch with the rocking chairs... oh, and then there was the swing! And the best thing, no signal! A weekend freed from the tyranny of the cellphone.

Thank you so much for the kind words-so happy you all enjoyed it! Your thoughtful care in leaving the cabin in such wonderful condition is also truly appreciated. We would be honored to host you all again whenever the rhythm of study and life calls for another restorative retreat! Thank you!
After we decided to do a last-minute trip, and VRBO would not allow us to choose same day stay, I booked the next night and left a message asking if they would be able to add a night so that we could leave sooner. The owners went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, so that we were able to stay at their property that same night plus the following night! The pictures do not do it justice. My children and our two dogs had a blast. We went to some of the local lakes and streams. A definite gem!
This was an amazing getaway from the city life back to the quiet mountains. The property was beyond our initial thoughts! Wish we could’ve stayed and rented month by month instead. The house was cute and stocked with everything you would need plus more for a great getaway. Property was maintained and full of many activities and wood to keep that fire going. Great wildlife viewing and a beautiful drive down into the town and some state parks (fun to swim at). The host left little fire pit treats (s’mores) and a well stocked kitchen and house. Couldn’t have asked for anything more. I will definitely be recommending and talking about it for the future. I’m already planning a return trip back it was truly that great! Side note: I’d recommend a 4WD or good truck to reach the property. Rocky hill roads lead to the property but it adds to the great retreat feeling and being off grid.
