Private island - only our cottage - best view of harbor - lighthouse - ocean

Gooseberry Island is a seasonal rental, and is only available from MAY through OCTOBER each year.To get a complete accounting of your rental costs please enter your rental dates in the upper right corner of the site and look for an instant quote. Please note : Gooseberry island has only one dwelling on it and is completely private . It is only accessible by boat . See " NOTES " section for many additional details.

Gooseberry Island is a small private island located in Portsmouth Harbor adjacent to the Maine shore at Kittery Point. Formerly a retreat for business associates, family, and friends, Gooseberry Island has remained in the same family for nearly 100 years. Gooseberry is the only inhabited private island in Portsmouth Harbor, and has fantastic unobstructed views of historic Whaleback Lighthouse, Ft. Constitution and it's lighthouse, Ft. McClary, and the open ocean with the Isles of Shoals in the distance. With hundreds of feet of completely private waterfront , beaches , and tide pools , it is a wonderful little paradise , especially for children .

The dwelling is a classic New England style two story saltbox. It is available for rent from May through October and is accessible only by boat. The first floor consists of a modern kitchen with tile floor, cherry cabinets, and granite counter tops. The bathroom, located directly off the kitchen, is also designed with cherry cabinetry, a pink New Hampshire granite vanity, and beautiful custom shower with a solid glass door and custom tiled interior. An additional spacious shower room and changing area with hot and cold water from our drilled well is located on the back porch. The front of the house is comprised of a large L-shaped room which incorporates the living room and dining area. French doors open onto a classic semi-enclosed, shingled front porch furnished with vintage Woodard wrought iron furniture, and a panoramic view of the mouth of the harbor and open ocean .

On the second floor, the master bedroom has a chaise lounge, two period bureaus, and a king-sized bed. Adjacent to this room is a loft bedroom containing two single beds, two child beds , a bureau, and bedside tables. The cottage is best described as a well designed house for four, with ample space for an additional two or three young children or PERHAPS another adult.

Adjacent to the main cottage there is a rustic cabin that contains two bunk beds, TV, refrigerator, bureau, and desk. A large double window affords an excellent view of the boat harbor ; a special place just for kids!

This unparalleled island location includes all the amenities that one would expect on the mainland. There is a drilled well and pump house which supply excellent water that must be used sensibly for showers and kitchen use. The bathroom is equipped with an odorless electric composting toilet which requires minimal attention to operate – less than 30 seconds per day and actually functions better than a conventional one! The island is powered by submarine cables and has electric central heat. With the exception of the tiled kitchen and bathroom, all floors throughout the house are polished hardwood. As island living goes, it is luxurious. Gooseberry is a change of pace destination for guests anticipating a pristine setting with all the comforts of modern living. The cottage and cabin are the only dwellings on the island. No other people have access to the island without permission from the residents. Gooseberry island is accessible only by boat.

Transportation and secure parking are arranged from either our private pier or from the town landing . Our pier is approximately one mile from the island, the town landing one quarter mile. Guests may also access the island with their own boats. The dock at Gooseberry Island can accommodate a boat up to 50’ in length. Launch service is available any time throughout the day as requested. The launch can ferry you to various points throughout the harbor as well as our dock or the town dock at a nominal price . Transportation upon arrival and departure is aboard our boat, the "Anna D ", and is included in the rental price. The "Anna D " is also available by arrangement for fishing trips, whale watching, or sight seeing . We are available 24\7 for emergency purposes. A 24' Carolina Skiff with 90 hp Honda is available for rent to qualified guests upon request.

Portsmouth, N.H., and York, Maine , hospitals are only 10 or 15 minutes from our dock. Boston's world famous Mass. General Hospital as well as many others of equal renown are only one hour away. Additionally, one of our close friends is a surgeon and partner at Portsmouth's Sports Medicine Atlantic Orthopedics clinic , ten minutes from our dock.

There are six kayaks and an aluminum row boat on the island for our guests' use . These boats may be used to travel to our home dock, or to the town landing where there is a general store as well as an excellent restaurant. Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier, a locally famous restaurant where guests can select their own lobsters from live tanks, is just a short paddle from the island. Dining tables are outside on a deck built over the water with an unspoiled view of the creek and the opposing shoreline.

The White Mountains of New Hampshire are only an hour and a half away. World famous L.L. Bean and Cabela’s are each within 45 minutes. Portsmouth NH with its fabulous restaurants, shopping, live theater, beautiful parks, and historical sites is just at the other end of the harbor. The famous Ogunquit Playhouse is twenty minutes distant by car. The York Beaches and Wild Animal Kingdom are located in the neighboring town of York, Maine. For rainy days one could consider shopping at the renowned Kittery Outlet Malls. During June, July, and August rentals are by the week, running from Saturday to Saturday unless by arrangement with the owners.

Perfect Island Get-away

Our family had a wonderful week on Gooseberry Island. The house is extremely charming and the islands beaches are everything you could ask for when it comes to endless adventures and exploring with your kids. Tudor and Jim are wonderful hosts as well. Take advantage of the opportunity to rent your own island in the picturesque location.

Everything about the stay was amazing.

It's really hard to imagine a more beautiful place. The house was spotless, beautiful and comfortable. The harbor was perfect for swimming, kayaking and hanging out, and the views of the water and lighthouses amazing. Jim and Catur were totally awesome--accommodating, generous, great guys, and you really can't beat the gifts of locally caught fish and whelks from Jim. Portsmouth is just a few minutes away and is a cute town with lots of cool restaurants and bars. We're definitely coming back.

Fabulous Maine Cottage!

Spent four nights with long time girl friends. Was an absolutely fabulous property, clean, well appointed, gorgeous ocean and harbor views. couldn't ask for anything more. the private little island offered privacy, great sea kayaking, and a quick and easy access to Kittery and Chancey's Creek Restaurant. Owners were wonderful to work with during the renting process, and checked in to see that all was good. Plan to rent it again next summer!

Great Time

Dear Jim, Catur and Tudo I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our days at Gooseberry Island. Everyone here agrees it was one of our best vacations ever, and came at the right place at the right time (we all needed a serious de-stressing from NJ). Gooseberry was the taste coastal living we'd hoped for. Your hospitality was terrific. Cheesecake to die for, fishing excursions that were worthy of a travel magazine write-up, fresh lobster delivered to the door. You couldn't have been more welcoming. Our sincere thanks to your family for making our stay thoroughly enjoyable. We look forward to returning in years to come.

A paradise, experience and memory to treasure.

An island paradise all your own of astonishing luxury and comfort. This home is a dream come true. The house is magnificent: full kitchen, warm and inviting living room, screened in patio with all the best of comfortable furniture, roof, fresh air, sunlight and screens to keep out bugs. It has a hidden camp with bunk beds for adventurous teenage children. It has beaches, rocks to climb on, every kind of boat to explore. And yet you’re on your own island. It’s an experience to cherish, a joy and a lifetime memory.

Kittery Point Island Cottage Review

Our family of 5 enjoyed a restful and enjoyable week in the Austin's home on Gooseberry Island. The cottage was very comfortable with excellent amenities from the teak outdoor shower to the well-stocked kitchen. We also enjoyed the hospitality of the owners and their son including a very successful half-day fishing trip off shore. Although there is plenty to do around Kittery, ME, we found the cottage and island living was all we needed to truly decompress and enjoy each other's company for a week. Between the kayaks and the very inexpensive launch service, getting off the island is not a chore and adds to the adventure and fun of getting out of the home and work routines. This property is not oversold, it's as beautiful and well-kept as it looks in the photos. Thank you Jim, Tudor and Catur for a wonderful family vacation!

The perfect spot!

Everything about staying on Gooseberry Island is perfect -- you know it when you walk up the boardwalk from the dock under arches of lilacs. Situated right across from Pepperell Cove, there are beautiful views of the mouth of the Piscataqua, Whaleback Light, Portsmouth Light, and scenery. Excellent water views all around -- hard to even describe. The cottage is wonderfully furnished, and the master bedroom has exceptionally beautiful views. You can enjoy the many water birds, watch harbor traffic, grill out, and have perfect peace & privacy -- but the Pepperell Cove Provisions store and town docks are just a quick boat trip away . . . great creeks and coves to kayak (there are kayaks on the island!). The owners, Jim and Tudor, were a pleasure to work with -- easy going and accommodating. They took great care to ensure the Pam and I were comfortable with the cottage and life on the island. A wonderful spot on earth, and I highly recommend it if you would like a unique coastal NH & Maine experience!

Romantic Family Vacation!

We had an absolutely wonderful time on this island! It is one of the most unique and beautiful places that I've ever seen. The tides rise and fall 10-11 feet in height. This changes the landscape dramatically and you feel like you never run out of things to explore. Our 3 kids spent the days rock climbing, finding tiny crabs and other treasures, swimming, and just enjoying the freedom of being able to explore. My husband and I tied the kayaks together and were able to kayak to lunch, to a general store, and a few gorgeous beaches all within a few minutes. Even though the house has 2 TVs, our kids never even asked to turn them on (unheard of!). Also, I have to mention the owners and family were wonderful about checking in to make sure we were okay (which makes island life much less intimidating). Thank you for a wonderful romantic vacation! We will treasure the memories always.

Wonderful Week on Our Own Private Island!

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Gooseberry Island with our 3 little boys and we cannot wait to return! The little island is just perfect. There is a view out every window and the boys enjoyed exploring the island. We filled our days with kayaking, tide pooling, exploring the area and relaxing. It was wonderful and a real opportunity to relax and spend time with the family without too many distractions. The house is well equipped with everything you'll need. Jim and Catur were wonderful hosts as well. During the week we were there, we went fishing with them out on their boat. My boys were catching 6 fish at a time! It was something they will never forget and neither will we. Jim and Catur even brought lobster to our door one evening. They are warm and generous and it made the stay even better. If you want a relaxing location that allows you to take a step back from the crazy pace of life, this is the IDEAL location!

SECOND TRIP TO ISLAND - A WEEK TO REMEMBER FOREVER!

THIS WAS OUR SECOND TRIP TO THE ISLAND AND BETTER THAN EVER! TUDOR, JIM & CATUR WERE SO WONDERFUL - FEEL LIKE FAMILY! TUDOR MADE US THE MOST DELICIOUS GRAPE PIE. IF YOU'VE NEVER HAD ONE - YOU ARE IN FOR A TREAT! THE WEATHER WAS BEAUTIFUL AND THE WATER WAS STILL WARM ENOUGH TO WADE AROUND THE ISLAND CASTING OUT - HOPING FOR A STRIPER, WATCHING THE SEAL & BIRDS CHASING AFTER BAIT FISH. WE WATCHED A FLY FISHERMAN IN OUR COVE CATCH & RELEASE A BASS WHILE WE ATE BREAKFAST! WE WERE IN OUR BATHING SUITS A FEW DAYS. BROUGHT OUR BOAT WITH US AND WENT OUT DEEP SEA FISHING - SAW TUNA, WHALES, SEALS AND LOTS OF MIGARATORY BIRDS. HAD LOTS TO EAT ON THE BBQ & ENJOYED OUR FAMILY. EVERY NIGHT WE SAT ON THE OPEN PORCH DRINKING WINE & WATCHING THE BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS! AS NIGHT APPROACHED, THE HOUSE WAS PLENTY WARM WITH THE COOL EVENINGS & SEA BREEZES. SEPTEMBER CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL MONTH TO VISIT THE ISLAND! CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN IN THE SPRING!

THIS PRIVATE ISLAND IS WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF - A HIDDEN JEWEL THAT PEOPLE HAVEN'T DISCOVERED YET.

LET YOUR CARES MELT AWAY AS YOU STEP ONTO THIS PRIVATE ISLAND FILLED WITH FLOWERING SHRUBS AND OLD SHADE TREES! THE SEA BIRDS DANCING ABOVE THE OCEAN WAVES, FOG HORNS IN THE DISTANCE, AND THE SUNSETS THAT MELT INTO YOUR DREAMS! JIM & TUDOR ARE WONDERFUL HOSTS AND HELPED US GET SETTLED ON THE ISLAND. JIM HAS MANY INTERESTING HISTORIC STORIES TO TELL ABOUT THE ISLAND AND WAS VERY HELPFUL WITH FISHING HINTS. THE HOUSE ITSELF IS BEAUTIFULLY DECORATED WITH ANTIQUES AND COMFORTABLE FURNITURE. THERE IS A MAGNIFICENT WATER VIEW FROM EVERY ROOM! OUTSIDE ARE PICNIC TABLES AND LAWN FURNITURE AND A VARIETY OF KAYAKS TO USE. OUR FIRST MORNING WE TOOK OUR COFFEE AND FISHING POLES TO THE EDGE OF THE WATER AND CASTED OUT TO CATCH A 26" STRIPED BASS - WHAT A WAY TO START THE DAY! LATER WE TOOK THE KAYAKS AND EXPLORED SOME OF THE ISLANDS. ONE DAY AT LOW TIDE WE WALKED WAY OUT ON THE FLATS. ANOTHER DAY WE EXPLORED THE RIVER AND TIDEL WATERS. ANOTHER SPENT OUTSIDE THE HARBOR FISHING. EVERY DAY STARTED AND ENDED ON THEIR BEAUTIFUL FRONT PORCH WATCHING A COUPLE OF BIRDS NESTING & TIME GO BY. THERE IS A DISH TV WITH LOTS OF CHANNELS (BUT WE DIDN'T WANT TO JUMP BACK INTO THE BUSY CRAZY WORLD FROM WHICH WE CAME, INSTEAD WE FOUND IT MUCH NICER ENJOYING MOTHER NATURE AT HER BEST! THE KITCHEN HAS EVERYTHING YOU COULD ASK FOR. THE HOUSE AND GROUNDS WERE VERY WELL MAINTAINED. WE READ OVER THE COMMENTS PEOPLE HAD MADE IN THE GUEST BOOK AND FOUND WE ARE NOT ALONE IN FEELING WE HAVE MADE NEW FRIENDS WITH JIM & TUDOR AND CAN'T WAIT FOR OUR RETURN VISIT THIS FALL!

Best vacation and fishing trip ever! Can't wait to come back!

Jim, "Fantastic! Awesome!", "Best place ever!", "Who needs Disney?" "We're begging....can we come back again", "We should move here!", "YES!" All quotes from the boys! Needless to say we are having a great time and today was a hit! Thank you for finding us fish! You and Catur were so thoughtful of the kids ages, stamina, and attention today! They loved catching all the mackerels then to move on in the most unexpected places to catch the big ones! Even if we hadn't caught the fish we were so happy seeing all the sights. We loved seeing so many beautiful sites, the Navy Yard, Portsmouth Prescott park, the Thomas Leighton, all the great bird action, loved the dancing bird but especially the FISH! Thank you for spending such patient time with the boys! Bergen especially loved seeing that the bait fish was actually in the stomach of the bass that we caught! Loving it all Jim, Thank you! As for dinner, Yum! One of Jeff's rowing friends rowed over for dinner from Rye Beach and boy was he impressed! . We had the AMAZING bass simpy prepared on the grill with butter. It was better than anything we have had from our fresh fish markets. Nothing fresher than catching then eating, right?! We also had lobster, that was yummy thanks to you and some other things from the local stores. We are happy and having a great vacation! We are so thankful that you are genuinely and truly happy that we are having a wonderful time. This is more than we had hoped and way beyond our expectations! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and all the natural beauty that surrounds it! Thank you! Jody

"One of a Kind" Vacation

Gooseberry Island was a wonderful experience that brought much relaxation and many memories. When we arrived at Jim and Tudor's main home they had our car securely parked and arranged to have our coolers and essentials loaded on the boat by Anthony. Anthony drove us directly to the Island unloaded are essentials and answered any questions, he was wonderful and was always available to help us with anything we needed. From the rowboat to the kayaks we were always having a good time, Primo our English Springer Spaniel loved to join us on either the boat or the kayak and had quite a time swimming in the cove. You are able to walk out of the house and swim in the harbor, as well as rowboat up to the local beach. This beautiful house is located on a private and secure Island, is very cozy and has 3-dimensional views: the mouth of the ocean with a lighthouse, the mooring area of the Pepperell Cove and a woodsy view with multiple creek entrances for kayak trips. Very unique..... one side of the island could be hot whereas the other side had a nice breeze and is cooler, something you will never experience again! The house worked perfectly, with hot water in the showers ( including an outdoor shower), nice size kitchen, and a wonderful dining room with views of either side of the Island. The choice is yours! The woodwork and attention to detail is something you will not find on an Island. The master bedroom has views from 3 sides of the Island. The kids loved to sleep in the "bunk house", which had quite the camping feel to it. We were able to access a provision shop across the harbor by rowboat which had everyday food needs. They will even deliver with advance notice as a courtesy. Jim took my son and me out on a deep sea fishing trip, and we caught a fish about every 5 minutes! Jim has a definite knack for locating fish and with many years of fishing and knowing the waters, we caught large Cod about 12 to 18 pounds and nice size Haddock. Jim and Tudor were very kind and generous to have us to their home for an amazing meal. Jim had delivered lobsters in a live well which was stored on the dock all week to preserve freshness. We literally walked down to the dock each night and choose our lobsters from the live well. Amazing!! I must say if you're looking for privacy in a "one of a kind location" this is the spot. Jim & Tudor are amazing hosts, unbelievable chefs and just salt of the earth good people! Our vacation was not 5 stars but 10 stars.

Beautiful area!!

Our family had a wonderful week on the island! Our kids, 10 and 7, loved having our own private island. The island is large enough that everyone stayed entertained, but small enough that the kids could be outside playing on their own safely. We spent most of the time outside exploring the tide pools and climbing on the rocks. It was a new adventure every time with the tide coming in and out. At low tide, you can actually walk all the way across the water to another beach. We really enjoyed the kayaks and took them around the island, up the river, and to and from the main harbor dock when we wanted to go into town. The food at the restaurant at the harbor was delicious. The Provisions shop was also great for picking up snacks and water throughout the week. We were able to keep a car at the harbor so we got to enjoy a couple day trips to towns/beaches nearby as well. The house itself has everything you need for one family. Some luxuries such as Wifi and strong water pressure are lacking, but that is to be expected on a private island!! The outdoor shower was really nice at the end of a long day. The kids also enjoyed playing in the bunkhouse. The pier was great for fishing and jumping off into for swimming. There was always wonderful breeze that kept the house cool. Jim was very hospitable from the moment we arrived and made us feel welcome and at home. We got to enjoy some of his and his wife's wonderful food and baked goods :-) We would love to visit the area again one day!

Idyllic Island Get Away- the best of both worlds

A masterfully built and well maintained Maine Island "cottage," perfectly sited on the high point of a substantial private island to provide 360 degree vista views of Portsmouth Harbor, New Castle Island, three Light Houses & the ocean. It has modern amenities and everything needed for an idyllic week's "get away from it all" experience for our extended family and dogs. Owned by the Austin family for approximately 100 years, Gooseberry Island is a short row or boat ride from the amenities of the Pepperrell Cove/Kittery Point marina, yet feels totally disconnected from the bustle of the charming seaside towns. The island is an interesting mix of grassy lawns, mature trees, scrubby shoreline vegetation, pebble beaches and massive weathered rock formations. The Austins welcomed us at their main land compound, helped us unload our gear and coolers stuffed with a week's provisions, then securely parked our cars. They loaded us onto one of their boats for the 15 minute cruise through the harbor to the island. The dock is commercial grade, with deep water during all tides. The crew helped us carry our gear up the ramp and over the hundred yard wooden walkway. The last of the lilac blossoms were welcoming and the cottage was nicer than we had imagined. Six kayaks and a row boat provided days of fun fishing and exploring. The main floor has open architecture, large modern windows, oak flooring, cathedral ceilings, comfortable leather seating, a large cherry dining table for eight and an extensive collection of antique rugs & bronzes. The kitchen has tile flooring, ample cherry cabinets, full sized appliances and was completely stocked The front porch is the sweet spot! Upstairs has a large "MBR" with great views and a separate sleeping area for 2-4. A separate "bunk house" has 2 twins. Satellite TV and full electricity worked great as did the "plumbing" in the modern bath and the 2nd outside shower. The highlights for us were: > beachcombing, boating, family barbecues & "chilling out;" > Hours on the front porch enjoying sunsets and vista views of the ocean, New Castle, kittery harbor and mouth of the Pisquataua - watching boats and ships of all types and sizes fishing, sailing, lobstering, heading out to sea and back into port; >A half-day sightseeing trip of Portsmouth harbor and up to York on Jim's big boat; > Hosting Jim and Tudor Austin for pot luck supper! His smoked shoulder and her parfaits were super. We can't wait to get back.

A little piece of Heaven right here on Earth

This setting is one of the most amazing places in New England. This was our third vacation on Gooseberry Island and every day brought something new and exciting. Although the weather did not cooperate every day, we still found things to do. The changing of the tides and seas, brought something different every day, waiting for the tide to go out to search for sea glass or other treasures brought in by the waves. We ventured into Portsmouth, walks to Sanders Lobster Company, lunch at the Oar House, trips to KTP and lunch at Robert's Bar and Grille, fishing that only resulted in bait fish and lot's of boating. The accommodations are very comfortable and the kitchen is well stocked. Being able to sit outside, even when it was raining is breathtaking. For anyone that reads this review, take advantage of clear evenings and watch planes coming out of Logan and heading to Europe. Bring a good book, make a puzzle, play cribbage, enjoy a sunset, eat lots of lobster and make memories. Gooseberry Island, Jim, Tudor and Catur are amazing people and it's clear that they love to share this very special spot. We will return!

Great place to get away

We loved our stay at Gooseberry Island -- the perfect place to turn off technology and just relax. The house is super cute and comfortable and the harbor views, especially the sunsets, are amazing. We used the kayaks every day -- both for exploring the area and getting back and forth to the town dock. Wallingford Square was a regular destination for morning coffee at Lil's and we had a great dinner one night at The Black Birch. Highly recommend!

Unique experience!

We stayed here last summer with our theee teenagers. The house was beautiful! The house is decorated beautifully - very impressive. There is only one real bedroom which is fantastic. The other twin beds are at the top of the stairs in an alcove type area with no privacy. My kids didn't care about that. One of my boys slept in the bunkhouse which is great for teenage boys. Like a bunkhouse at summer camp. We were able to kayak everywhere. We loved being able to kayak to private beaches each day and kayaked down the little river for lobster dinner one night. We certainly entertained the dinner guests as we arrived by kayaks. We wish we would have rented the boat to have more options. Jim took us out fishing for mackerel one day and we caught hundreds! The kids loved it. You can also kayak 5-10 minutes to the boat landing which has a great outdoor restaurant for chowder or drinks. Once you meet the owner you will understand he is not in the Rental business for money- if you feel the price is too good to be true for your own island- you are a wrong. The price is silly reasonable in our opinion. We strongly recommend asking for the chocolate cake baked by Jims wife. To die for. Awesome experience for us.

Beautiful and secluded

Thank you so much! We had such a wonderful experience. It was quiet, secluded and just perfect for a peaceful vacation. We spent an entire week of relaxing, boating, and playing with our dog on the beaches. Our 10 month old baby boy enjoyed discovering the seashells, walking along the beaches and experiencing his first boat ride. We're looking forward to making this a yearly tradition. Thank you, again, for helping us create beautiful memories for our family. We'll see you next year!

More than just and Island

We arrived Met Jim and Scott at the Dock, they helped us load and unload our bags and groceries. It was short ride from their dock to island. We had rented the Whaler for the week to tour the area, up Chanceys Creek, close ups of the light houses, and pier, very helpful to have the boat, but definatlry not a neccesity, as the town dock is so close kayaking would take no time at all. Gosseberry Island has alot more to offer than I thought, sunrise and sunset kayaking, relaxing, sunbathing, scavanging the island ,so much sea glass and whole bottles to collect . At low tide you can walk to fisher island or cross the mud flats and walk along a gorgeous beach to the pier and beach at Fort Fosters park, kids can search and shells and hermit crabs. Just be sure to return well before high tide! Fish of the dock or kayak fish. we did both from the dock one small flounder and small Stipped bass which we tossed back to grow up! I kayaked fished and did very well with strippers 19 total !! YUP! and boy was it fun! 17 were not keepers but the 2 that were towed me around in that kayak until they tired! Great Island to unwind , have fun, reconnect. We had no problems with amenities, space etc, just perfect! I highly recommend this rental! Upon return back we got to meet Tudor, and what a wonderful sweet woman! Their charm and kindness were a wonderful ending to a great Vacation, Thank you !

So relaxing - perfect getaway!

We recently stayed at this gorgeous spot for one of the most relaxing long weekends we've both had in a very long time. The house was perfect - we loved taking the boat in and out for lunches and dinners. It was so nice to come back to a quiet spot so we really could get away from it all. The restaurants in Kittery were unbelievable - we were both blown away as we had intended to experience the food scene in Portsmouth. Jim and Tudor were so kind to answer all of our questions as we were preparing for our trip. They even secured a boat for us to enjoy some lazy day cruising, too, which was the highlight of the trip for me. If you're looking for a quiet getaway, then look no further. This spot is incredible!

What an experience!

Thank you to Jim and family for a wonderful visit over the Memorial Day holiday. This was just simply an unbelievable experience, for both mom and dad but especially for our 2 kids who couldn't stop exploring every inch of the island. The row boat ride to get lobster about a 1/2 mile up one of the creeks was the highlight of our off-island time (though my wife might say shopping at the outlets!), but really it was just the pleasant together time on the island that made this so special. And while we had it all to ourselves, Jim and family were only a call away and they were so responsive - we had a minor issue with the water heater, and they had a plumber come out bright and early on a Sunday morning! Very minor blip, handled so well, in what was a trip we'll never forget!

Jim arranged so much for our active family in advance and made sure that any of the questions we asked were not only answered, he went the extra mile to be helpful in making suggestions of the best local spots to visit. Jim arranged fishing adventures that included his son Catur, Jim’s own participation and their local fishing expertise. Staying on the island was wonderful. From enjoying the view, to having 3 active boys playing in the tide pools, kayaking, or rowing boats around the around the island - there was always an adventure or an opportunity to relax available. It’s hard to say what we enjoyed the most. Jim’s lobster rolls and Tudor’s baking were excellent, better than anything we could have had at a restaurant! Their hospitality was beyond what we have experienced with any other vacation home. This charming family island is the perfect place to stay.

Wow!!!

We have not stopped raving about the week on "our island" since we returned from our trip! After being away from the Maine Coast for many years, we were itching to get back to the beautiful summers we remembered. We will never stay away again (we are already deciding when to go back to the island for 2016). It is incredible how quickly the day went by while we were "doing nothing"! We felt no need to leave the island at all! My husband ad I are on the go all the time and this was the perfect vacation for us. We had glorious weather, fabulous food (Jim supplied wonderful lobster & fish; Tudor is an incredible baker!) Catur was very responsive to our needs. The island has a spectacular location, the cottage is beautifully built, the grounds are wonderful to explore and the great city of Portsmouth is very close by if one feels the need to get off the island. It is not often a vacation spot exceeds our expectations - Gooseberry Island certainly did!!! For a couple, single individual or a family, what a special experience it will be. Folks back home can't believe the pictures! Thanks again for everything!!! B&M

The owner’s family has roots in the Portsmouth/Kittery area that date back to the 17th century. They love the seacoast area as well as their proximity to the White Mountains. Avid fishermen, they spend many nice summer days fishing for striped bass, cod, haddock, and other local fish. The cottage on Gooseberry Island has always been a special place for them, and is often the destination of choice for social outings. They find it the ideal location for picnics and lobster bakes. Complimentary fresh fish is made available to their guests provided the owners have had successful fishing trips during your stay.

Why they chose this property

Gooseberry Island is a family-owned property that has been in our family for generations. The island is located in Pepperrell cove with a panoramic view of the entire harbor as well as a direct view of the open ocean. Within sight of the island is Ft. McClary, an original French- Indian war block house that is open to the public, as well as Ft. Constitution where Paul Revere finished his ride to warn of the approach of the British troops.

What makes this property unique

The Island offers a unique sense of isolation and tranquility while still providing ready access to the picturesque and historical New England coast. As guests on the island, you will be the sole inhabitants, and as it is accessable only by boat, it will remain completely private.
Please advise of your arrival time and plans as we will have our boat standing by to transport you to the island. Arrival between the hours of 12 noon and 3pm allow us time to be organized for your transport. If you must deviate from this schedule, please arrange ahead of time.
