About this property
1842 Mansion on the Bayou
Imagine staying in a 180 year old mansion on the graceful Bayou Teche. As you turn in the driveway, shrouded by ancient live oaks, you will catch your first glimpse of the Albania Mansion. She boasts eleven thousand square feet of Louisiana history within her beautiful, restored walls. Over three thousand square feet of balconies on three different floors are perfect for relaxation, bird watching, and star gazing. The mansion is decorated using period pieces but also with attention to comfort and all the necessary modern amenities. This is perfect for family getaways, girls trips, special events, and retreats. Have a cup of coffee, or a glass of wine on a balcony as you watch the egrets fly lazily down the bayou. Conveniently located in the heart of Acadiana, this area is perfect for exploring the Cajun Coast and immersing yourself in the warmth of Cajun culture. Located along the Old Spanish Trail, Albania Mansion is a short drive from tourist attractions such as Avery Island, Jefferson Island, the Atchafalaya Swamp and Lafayette. Enjoy kayak bayou tours, antiquing, and even ghost tours in nearby Franklin. Try your luck at the Cypress Bayou Casino, take an airboat tour, or visit the many plantations located within driving distance. Or choose to do absolutely nothing at all. Sit and contemplate history, experience nature, or walk beneath the cathedral of oaks. While there is much you can see and do in the area, this house is the main attraction so you may find yourself inclined to rest awhile and take it all in. We can provide all manner of cooking experiences from gumbo and jambalaya lessons to Cajun crawfish boils and fish fries. This will be an experience like no other. Come stay with us and experience something special and unique!

About the host
Hosted by Terry and Liz Creel
We are lifelong Louisiana residents with a deep bond to our state and our culture. We have significant experience restoring historic homes in the New Orleans area. We work in the hospitality business there where we own and operate the ParkView Historic Hotel, which has been in business since 1884. We love our culture and thrive on helping visitors have an authentic and memorable experience.
Why they chose this property
This is an exceptional property with an extraordinary history. Built between 1837 and 1842 for German immigrants who were issued a Spanish Land Grant to settle in the area. The home is a three story Center Hall Greek Revival Mansion which has the largest unsupported spiral stair in the state. It is also among the largest of the antebellum homes in Louisiana. At one time, it was a 6,000 acre sugar plantation. After the civil war, the property was transferred to a Jamaican national who became one of the most successful sugar brokers in history. When he died in the early 1900s he left Albania to the City of New Orleans to establish the eponymous Delgado Community College for the education of underprivileged people. The city still owns the surrounding sugar cane land to this day. Cajun farmers lease the land from the city and proceeds are used to support capital projects on the school's campus. Historical figures such as John James Audubon have stayed here, and luminaries Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe visited in the 1960s. The home has been immaculately restored but is not a museum. It is a place of great beauty and serenity; a place to consider the past and also exist in the magical current moment.
What makes this property unique
The property is simply unlike any other; there is no other place in the state where you can stay like this. The size of the home is staggering: nine bedrooms, nine and a half bathrooms, six different interior parlors, dens, and seating areas, five porches, and nine acres of nature and gardens all on the banks of the Bayou Teche. This is truly something special to and unique to experience.
