About the host
Hosted by Jeffrey Vadheim
I found Saba on a map when I was 9 and knew I had to come here some day. I was a tourist almost annually for 35 years until I moved here from my first "retirement" home at Lake Chapala, Mexico, 5 years ago to buy the Althea property which I had rented in the past. In 2021 I completed Martha Cottage at the far end of the property for myself and I returned Althea to the tourist rental market. In 2022 Peter Hytte was finished as my guest suite but mainly as an additional tourist apartment for two or as an extension of the main cottage for the third couple in a group traveling together as divers like to do.
Currently a full bedroom with second bath is being built connected above the original studio with completion date on or before May 18, 2026. All future 2026 reservations made before this addition is actually available for service will be accepted at the current studio rates. Once in service, the full cottage will accommodate up to 4 persons in the two queen beds. The third and fourth persons will be $30 each. The Murphy bed can be put away during the day for full use of the living/dining room.

Why they chose this property
The first time I landed on Saba in 1983 I felt immediately at home. It was like driving into my little hometown in rural Minnesota...a very comfortable, homey feeling. Over 40 years of coming here regularly I've met and been friends with a lot of local Sabans who have always made me feel welcome as a tourist and now even more as a permanent resident operating a local business.
What makes this property unique
I viewed over 10 properties with both real estate companies on the island in 2018-19 but always knew Althea was going to be "the one." Location is always prime in a property and Althea/Peter Cottages have it! Within 2-3 minutes you can walk to 7 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 grocery stores, 2 hardware/home furnishing stores, a business copy center, car rental lot, dive shop, 2 tourist stores, 3 churches, an optometrist, beauty salon, post office, community center, and our museum with park grounds for picnicking and lawn games.
