Atomic Ranch meets small-town Americana! Spacious hillside MCM space renovated with modern conveniences and filled with vintage furnishings & art. The airy loft commands stunning views from its second level floor-to-ceiling windows, while enjoying peace on the 2-acre wooded property. The perfect country getaway, in style!
* Spacious living room * Fully equipped kitchen * 2 king bedrooms * Large covered patio * Privacy w/self check-in * Amazing city & sky views * 2 min to downtown
The Loft is part of Stardust Retreat, where guests enjoy seclusion and relaxation on a wooded hilltop with views for miles. Downtown Commercial Avenue is less than 5 minutes away for dining & shopping.
Sleeps 15 if you book the entire retreat with the home next door. See the Atomic Ranch and Hollywood Glam Suite in my other listings.
The Loft occupies the entire second floor and has been completely renovated from its late-1950s origins into a modern beauty. The mid-century aesthetic has been kept, while bringing in contemporary amenities with fresh colors and stylish fixtures. Light pours through the floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall windows on two sides over gleaming hardwood floors. The spacious living room has two ceiling fans, a television with Roku and streaming channels, and a variety of games to enjoy.
It opens to a full kitchen that includes a large, granite-topped island with seating. You will find everything you need including pots and pans, dishes, silverware, glassware, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and coffee and tea supplies.
Two large bedrooms offer top-of-the-line, king-size gel posturepedic mattresses with luxury linens, ceiling fans and ample closet space. The front bedroom offers a wall-mounted TV with WiFi streaming services. The full bathroom includes a large walk-in shower supplied with shampoo, conditioner and shower gel.
Everything is very light, open and airy, and completely modern — a true architectural gem. The Loft is the entire upstairs floor with its own separate, private entrance. Downstairs is a separate one-bedroom guest suite which can also be rented. Both units are completely separate with their own entrances on different sides of the house.
NOTE: This loft is on the second floor of the house, accessible by one flight of indoor stairs. You MUST climb stairs to reach the unit!
All of this sits on Stardust Retreat's 3+ acres filled with towering oak trees and offering amazing city skyline views (the nighttime lights are magical). Sunrises & sunsets are stunning, as is the clear country night sky, perfect for stargazing. The expansive front porch is lovely for the views or bird & wildlife watching while enjoying some coffee or wine, and you will find a pair of high-quality binoculars to assist.
Available for your outdoor use is a small charcoal grill. There is a wonderful disc swing hanging from one of the many large trees that cover the property and a collection of outdoor recreation such as ladderball, cornhole, racquetball and skeeball. As far as child safety, there are outlet plugs installed and a baby/toddler gate for the top of the stairs is available. There is plenty of parking in the huge circular driveway for boats, ATVs, trailers or even campers/RVs (no hook-ups available).
The location is very private — the dead-end residential street has only two other homes (one of which is also part of the Stardust Retreat—see the Atomic Ranch listing), spread far apart. The effect is seclusion & relaxation, while being minutes from anything you need in town.

>> A 5 Diamond experience. This Mid Century home is a perfect retreat for anyone looking for an immaculate home with amazing views, ample space and wonderful character. >> SWOON! The VIEW—holy moly it's stunning. Bed was insanely comfortable. The house itself is a time capsule with architecture and material you simply cannot find nowadays. >> The decor and cleanliness was absolutely amazing! We enjoyed every strategic detail and added character to make the stay great! >> I loved the location and how private and quiet it was. The view from the property looking over Coleman was fantastic. >> We truly made a special memory here. It was a lovely home and just so fun with all the mid-century decor. I would recommend this to anyone. >> This is such a cool, unique, and fun place to stay. The house is just like it is in the photos. >> By far the best AirBnb I've ever stayed in. Such a beautiful home, and Shelley was an incredible host. 10/10 would recommend.
The upstairs loft is exclusively for booked guests, with separate/private access. Other guests may be staying in the downstairs one-bedroom suite (separate access at the other side of the house).
I live off-site - guests have complete privacy, but I am available should there be any questions or anything needed. I have a local manager and I'm fully available by telephone or message/email for anything you might need. The local person is on call should there be anything that requires immediate, on-site assistance. A guidebook to the property and the adorable town of Coleman is in the house.
You've heard of Marfa, right? Don't want to drive all the way out there? Coleman is destined to be the next Marfa (but, shh, let's keep the secret!). This cute small town is the perfect Hill Country / West Texas getaway. It's undergoing a renaissance with a wine bar (second on the way), fantastic restaurants and unique boutique stores (seriously, the dining and shopping have been written up in magazines, including Texas Monthly). It's also home to a fab mid-century modern store with high-quality pieces and a vintage vinyl shop, and longtime standbys like the Owl Drugstore, with its old-fashioned soda fountain (the second oldest in Texas, serving since 1923) and the best burgers around! The main street, Commercial Avenue, is only two minutes down the road from Stardust.
Nearby outdoor recreation and sportsmanship is plentiful, with 6 major lakes including O.H. Ivie, Hord's Creek, & Lake Brownwood State Park. The area is known as the "Hunting Capital of Texas."
The retreat itself is on an extremely quiet, private residential street that sits high up on a hill overlooking the town of Coleman. The street is a dead-end road with only two other homes - the next-door Atomic Ranch House that is also part of Stardust Retreat, and one other private home past us at the end of the street. The Stardust Retreat property is spread over three-and-a-half rolling, wooded acres; therefore the entire property is very peaceful, quiet and private.
Some of the top spots to check out around town are:
* The Owl Drugstore & Grill (second-oldest soda fountain in Texas!) * Rancho Loma Vineyards RLV Wine Bar * Rancho Pizzeria * Black Cur Steak * Bonneville Mid-Century Antiques & Vinyl Record Shop * Prickly Pear Boutique & Cafe * Sinclair Bakery * Cactus Coffee * Lake Coleman, O.H. Ivie & Hord's Creek
You need a car. PLENTY of parking at the house, even for campers, ATVs, boats, trailers, etc.
Absolutely no smoking inside the house! If any evidence of smoking is found, guest will be charged an additional $150 cleaning fee plus any damages from smoke or burn marks.
We do allow pets with an additional fee, and reserve the right to approve or not. If you wish to stay with a pet please send an inquiry message with information about your pet for approval BEFORE booking.
We DO NOT give refunds for inclement weather, travel advisories or personal reasons for cancellations. If you have a concern about any issue affecting your trip, we suggest you purchase travel insurance.

Thanks Bradley for staying and the review! And resurfacing that front part of the drive turning into the house is in the works. We have not been able to do it because of rain and cold weather. But it is already planned, it's important to us to keep the property well maintained. Thanks for the helpful feedback - looks like we're already on the same page :)

Thanks Wyatt! I'm glad our spacious parking helped you out. We appreciate your stay and certainly hope to welcome you back!
Such a cool property with an amazing view! The pics are accurate and yet it’s even cooler in person. We were there for a funeral so it was amazing that it turned out to be so nice.
We will be staying here again!!

I had problems with this rental from the moment I booked. The Host, Shelley, was very quick to message me claiming my payment didn’t go though, even though I received multiple emails from Vrbo saying it was booked, paid and confirmed. So I cancelled the charge and payed with a different card.
The day of arrival I had not received ANY information about how to access the unit.
I had received Emails from 3 different platforms; Vrbo confirming my stay, Shelley’s personal email, and a rental agreement from her business “Stardust Retreat”, however no information regarding how to access the rental.
After 8 hours and SIX possible channels of communication we had arrived and still had no code. I was on the verge of tears as me, my child, and partner had no way of accessing the unit. I noticed the downstairs unit had a renter in it and had to knock on their door, disturbing their stay, to see if they could possibly help me.
To my surprise they had also experienced code issues upon arrival and were extremely discouraged to how Shelley had treated them when their code didn’t work. Luckily they had an emergency code and we’re able to help get me and my family into our unit for the night.
At 1:00am I received an email from Shelley saying “the code was sent to you yesterday.”but still didn’t provide it.
I had 5 people helping me double check spam, trash and inbox folders and nothing regarding a code was sent from Vrbo, Shelley herself, or from “Stardust Retreat.” I’m unsure why there are so many channels to begin with and not all through the Vrbo App…
At 1:45 am I replied expressing that I STILL didn’t have the access code. The following day she sent me the code, emailed through a different channel.
She refuses to take any form of responsibility for this discrepancy and has been extremely difficult to work with. In fact I’m not sure I’ve ever experienced such lack of business etiquette in all of my life.
After telling my experience to several locals they confirmed how difficult she is to work with.
It’s really quite unfortunate because the rental itself is nice but I’ll never book here again due to lack of accessibility, help, accountability or remorse from the Host.
On top of it she is now attempting to charge me “damages” charges. As an ethical human I literally left the rental cleaner than I found it. I would appreciate a full refund and apology but just a refund will do.

There is an open case against this guest with VRBO for an unauthorized pet, extra cleaning, missing items, and other violations. VRBO has informed me that the guest is under investigation for getting removed from the platform.
The guest also disputed all of her charges with her credit card company, and those claims were denied and the issuing bank found in the favor of Stardust Retreat - both verifications that the guest was clearly in the wrong.
This is probably the only thing anyone needs to know to understand the situation. Please see our MANY other stellar 5-star reviews from hundreds of other guests on this listing and our other listing.
Immediately after this booking came through, I received an email from VRBO stating that "the guest provided a card for this booking, but it didn't pass verification/authorization. We've emailed a notification to the guest about the bad card, with a link to provide an updated card." I allowed the guest to provide a different form of payment, which should have been a red flag to me when the initial payment did not pass VRBO authorization.
After arrival, the guest egregiously violated our explicit rules by sneaking in an unauthorized pet without telling us or obtaining permission. We ARE in fact pet friendly and happily accept pets, but we make it crystal clear in our listing, booking process, and post-booking information (including the rental agreement that this guest signed), that any pet MUST be disclosed ahead of time and received permission for. We ask for an extremely reasonable $50 pet fee. Had this guest mentioned that her dog sitter wasn't available at the last minute and she needed to bring her pet I would have happily accepted it.
How short or long a time the pet was in the house is irrelevant. Our outdoor security cameras caught many instances of the guest with the pet going in and out of the property. When the guest left, there was trash and pet hair all over the property as well as pet feces all over the yard. It took our cleaner far more time than usual to rectify this situation. Also, items were missing from the house.
Her claim that she never received check-in instructions or her door code are blatantly false. We have an automated system that sends these out in email (as she was told upon first booking, check your email for instructions), and they are automatically tracked. My system clearly shows that this email was sent to her at 10 am the morning BEFORE her arrival day, was received, and was opened by her.
It's unfortunate that, having egregiously broken our very reasonable house rules so, that the guest has chosen to retaliate in this manner with false statements. I believe she has chosen this route because there is now an open case against her at VRBO.

We come to Coleman every year for our family reunion. This place was awesome!! We loved it here. My twelve year old thought all the windows were so cool.
A very nice property on top of a hill with a large yard and a great view. Easily fits a family of four with large windows overlooking Coleman toward the east and trees towards the west to block the setting sun. We really did not know what we were going to get into but were quite surprised and had a great time fishing at Brownwood lake and lounging around the property. We will be back :)
Very special place to stay in Coleman. Lovely accommodations and the view was gorgeous. Spent lots of time having cocktails on the patio. Lots to do in Coleman and nearby Hords Creek Reservoir. Wineries, great restaurants and the curated Bonneville MCM store. Will definitely be back!
My two boys and I just loved staying here! The house itself was spacious, gorgeous, and very clean. The town of Coleman is very cute and gazing on the lights of town from the house at night was incredibly peaceful and beautiful. I highly recommend staying here!!
The house is as modern and attractive as the pictures show it. It was the perfect layout, beautiful views, and had all the amenities you need. It was everything we hoped it would be. The property owner was very nice and responsive too. We plan on returning for a future trip.

Thanks so much and glad you enjoyed it! You're welcome back anytime!
Just like all the other reviews say, this place is amazing. Very peaceful area (some road noise) but no traffic in front of property.
We loved looking over Coleman at night.
Property owner was amazing to work with. We had to make a few changes and she was easy to communicate with and accommodated us.
Will definitely revisit this property!

About the host
Hosted by Shelley Seale
I am a huge MCM aficionado, and live in a mid-century home myself. When I bought these houses, I realized a dream of not only having such amazing, authentic MCM homes, but also of being able to share their treasures with others. My goal is to create a peaceful retreat in this lovely, revitalizing town of Coleman, in a truly unique setting. I have personal ties to the town — my mother's side of the family hails from neighboring Brownwood, and my mom lived in Coleman for a few years as a child in the 50s. I chose the name "Stardust" because it was my grandparents' song.
Why they chose this property
If ever the term "time capsule" were to be used to describe a house, it would be appropriate of the two properties that make up Stardust Retreat. I purchased this property because of my love of all things mid-century, and because I have personal ties to the area (my grandparents and mother lived in Coleman when my mother was a child).
The Loft House was built in the late 1950s by the McDaniel family. The Loft House as it is today was once the garage and loft apartment of the original house, built by J.E. McDaniel as a place for him and his cronies to drink whiskey, smoke cigars, and discuss running the town. Sadly, the main house was eventually left vacant for so long it had to be torn down. The garage apartment, however, was structurally sound and completely renovated down to the studs in 2011.
Once renovated, the Loft House was completely brand-new on the inside, yet retaining its mid-century aesthetic and decor. It was also part of the Terrace Inn B&B, until I purchased it in 2019. Since that time, it was a vacation rental property available on Airbnb, and today is part of the Stardust Retreat.
What makes this property unique
If ever the term "time capsule" were to be used to describe a house, it would be appropriate of the two properties that make up Stardust Retreat. To stroll through the property is to step almost seamlessly into the 1950s, as if you were stepping inside a museum.
