About this property
Be in Nature at this Gorgeous Riverfront Cabin
Wappinger Cottage is a Scandinavian-inspired home featuring landscaped gardens leading to the shimmering Wappinger Creek. Inside, contemporary furnishings accented by bold patterns and pops of color create a sophisticated and inviting space.
The house is designed to be cooled by cross ventilation. There are tower fans, but no AC. Pets allowed.
We are located at the end of a short private road and not visible from the rest of the quaint, established neighborhood. On approach you will be discover a mysterious black barn-like structure. Follow the path to the wrap-around deck to be greeted with walls of glass and a beautiful view of the trees and creek.
Flowing from the deck is a spacious open-plan living and dining space with a modern and efficient kitchen; two queen bedrooms with built-in closets- one with ensuite bathroom; a bunk room sleeping a further two guests; another bathroom with a tub; and a laundry room. The whole house has underfloor heating, which heats the polished concrete floors and radiates a cozy heat. In warm weather, large screened casement windows and sliding doors naturally ventilate the interior. High speed Wi-Fi, Apple TV, Nest thermostat and August key-free access bring modern technology to the countryside.
Despite the vernacular appearance of the house from the outside, the crisp white interior houses a collection of C20th classics: The John Pawson inspired oak dining table is paired with Hans Wegner’s Wishbone Chairs; an Eero Saarinen Womb Chair sits beside an LCW Chair in American walnut by Charles and Ray Eames; and Achille Castiglioni’s Arco Lamp overhangs a Nelson Platform Bench. Elsewhere you’ll find designs by Danish companies Menu and HAY and German designer Konstantin Grcic; Swedish and American rugs; and the owner’s collection of books, magazines and art.
We are on 1.5 acres garden of lawns, native grasses and wild flowers. The sprawling setting affords you privacy from neighbors and the cacophony of birds and the sound of the flowing creek will block out almost all manmade noises. In summer, the house is surrounded by a dense grove of trees. In winter, the view is of fields and distant hills. NYC feels like a world away!
As this is our weekend house, you'll have the entire property to yourself.
We keep an up-to-date Compendium in Wappinger Cottage which has all the information about the house and local area, including restaurants, supermarkets, activities, hospitals, pharmacies, vineyards, historic Houses and other local tourist attractions and towns to visit.
We are always available by phone or email if any issues arise.
The home is nestled in a serene neighborhood that invites peaceful walks through the forests and along the river. Poughkeepsie is nearby meaning tasty local restaurants and charming shops are always just a short drive away.
Uber and Lyft both operate in Poughkeepsie however pick up times will be much longer, so allow for that. There are also local taxi companies. We list our favorites in the compendium.
The Wappinger Creek is fed from the Thompson pond below Stissing Mountain almost 30 miles up stream and flows to the Hudson River. We love swimming in the river during summer and encourage you to do so too, but keep in mind that this is a natural waterway with no lifeguards. Entering is at your own risk.
Ample off-street parking is available for guests.
We use security cameras on this property to protect our home when we are not there. Four around the permitter of the house and one in the main living space. These are Disarmed for the duration of your stay at our house, however we may access them in emergency situations to ensure our guests and homes safety. eg: Guest locked out of property or smoke alarms activated. Please ask us if you have any questions.
