Makere Cottage is nestled on Soldier Hill with gentle breezes and breath taking views over Cane Garden Bay, surrounding islands and the Caribbean Sea. Situated within a tropical garden at the end of a short gated drive with a private 20-foot swimming pool and large sun terrace, Makere Cottage represents the ideal retreat in which to relax and unwind.

The cottage is very spacious and ideal for a couple or single guest. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, views over the bay and plenty of closet space. The large living room is very comfortable with a 3 seater sofa bed, armchair, day bed and dining table and is linked to the master bedroom via an adjoining 10-foot wide covered deck. The kitchen has all modern requirements and connects to the large private bathroom. There are a washing machine and tumble dryer in the nearby pump room.

The private swimming pool is on the same level as the cottage offering a welcome escape from the Caribbean heat. A sun terrace providing a spacious area for both sunbathing and al fresco dining surrounds the pool.

The cottage has been built very much in the ‘Caribbean Style’ with wooden decks, blue shutter windows, white walls and terracotta-tiled floors creating a clean and simple environment. With its positioning up on the hill there is usually a lovely cooling breeze at all times of year.

Makere Cottage is one of two short term holiday rental villas on the property. Both are one bedroom and completely private and separate to one another. They are rented only to couples or single guests to ensure a quiet and peaceful environment on the property. The swimming pool is for the exclusive use of guests staying in Makere Cottage.

Makere House is on the upper level with Makere Cottage below. To reach Makere Cottage you park on the upper level entrance drive and then walk down some stairs (approx. 20 steps) to reach the Cottage and swimming pool.

You will need to hire a 4-wheel drive vehicle on arrival in Tortola. We can provide you with contact details for a local car rental company who will meet you at the airport or ferry terminal and, if arriving after hours, arrange for you to be collected and taken to Makere Cottage where you car will be waiting. We will provide you with directions and a Google Maps Pin with which to find the property.

Our property manager lives nearby and can provide emergency assistance if you need it. Their contact number will be provided with the joining instructions.

The cottage is in great condition and the views from the top during the day are amazing! Enjoyed morning coffee on the patio over-looking the bay. Tina was a great host too and very responsive. My only warning is to anybody renting a car and driving themselves, just know ahead of time, the roads to the cottage (and many other roads on Tortola) are by far the steepest I have ever driven on and not very wide in many parts as well. I was fine and found it to be enjoyable and part of the adventure, but for anybody who is a timid driver or afraid to drive on steep hills, plan to use taxis for your stay and do not rent a car.

The cottage was perfect - even better than we expected. The pictures are impressive but can’t adequately capture the astonishing beauty of the views and surrounding area. The location was convenient to beaches, restaurants, marinas, and a well-stocked grocery store. The pool was amazing and so refreshing at the end of hot days spent exploring the island. We also appreciated the option of AC in the bedroom at night, which was hot during the time of year we visited. We loved our time spent on Tortola and can’t say enough good things about Makere Cottage or our hosts. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home in paradise with us!

Makere Cottage

The cottage was perfect for our family. Spacious and clean one bedroom. Our kids lived in the pool and we couldn't get enough of the balcony view. Location was just far enough away from the ferry for day trips and to go to Cane Gardens for dinner easily and avoid the mid-day cruise crowds.

Relaxation Above Cane Garden Bay

We enjoyed our time at Makere Cottage! The cottage is perfect for a couple offering lots of outdoor spaces, great pool, and lovely vistas. We cooked and used the best outdoor gas grill almost every night. And we never got tired of the view - Cane Garden Bay, Long Bay, and St.John/St. Thomas in the distance. We wished we would have booked the cottage for a few more weeks.

The view and pool access were clearly worthy of top rating but there are some challenges with staying at Makere. The main one is simply cooking - the kitchen is honestly smaller than the photos make it look and the stove/oven is an ancient gas one with no temperature controls. Grilling was the only real option and with early sunsets and no outside light above grill this was a challenge for us. I will note that we were the last family staying there - this may be less of an issue for couples. Groceries are hard to get - fresher stuff in Road Town (which is very busy) but even there we ended up with some spoiled items despite watching dates closely. Many of the other challenges are part of island life but were a bit worse here than other stays - bugs (had to sleep under the provided mosquito net and one person still had many many bites), water conservation (including having to buy all drinking and cooking water - this was a first for us as prior places provided office cooler type service if not safe), septic issues meaning you had to collect toilet paper, etc. The info in the host book was fairly limited so do some planning before you get there (hosts were helpful when asked questions about where to do specific activities).

The views from this property were absolutely stunning. I think the balcony overlooking cane bay was our favorite spot. Coffee on the balcony was so soothing for the soul. We would return in a heartbeat.

Wonderful stay at Makere overlooking Cane Garden Bay

Beautiful location. Well-appointed cottage with all the amenities you need. Excellent for a couple looking for a relaxing time in Tortola. A short distance to restaurants, beaches and necessities. Exceptional views from the porch to admire Cane Garden Bay below, with St Thomas and St John off in the distance. Having an afternoon pool was a great addition. What a view!

My husband and I spent our 25th anniversary here and couldn't have enjoyed it more, other than staying longer! We traveled around the whole island, visiting amazing cove after amazing cove. The people are very friendly and I was amazed at how clean the beaches were and not many stray animals, which always makes me sad on vacation. Thank you for an amazing cottage and vacation!!

A wonderful stay in Tortola

Makere Cottage was a perfect place to stay. We stayed in Tortola for a month this time and we couldn’t have selected a more perfect home. The property overlooks Cane Garden Bay which is beautiful and its location offers easy access to Road Town, restaurants and beaches. It is very roomy with good size rooms and plenty of closet space. We loved the kitchen and outdoor barbecue and the pool, which you don’t always find in a rental, was perfect. There isn’t anything more we could have asked for.and I recommend it highly.

Amazing property!

The location of this villa was perfect, with amazing views and, as it turned out, closest to our favorite beach ( Brewers Bay) and close to the amenities of Cane Garden Bay where we dined most evenings. The Villa has such an amazing view we chose to cook at home one night and the kitchen is perfectly serviceable. The diving is steep and bumpy all over Tortola so we planned on breakfast at the villa every morning and the coffee maker was great! Coffee and pastry on the deck in the morning was a perfect way to start the day after a good night sleep in a very comfortable bed. The pool and patio were also wonderful and we took a dip with a glass of wine most evenings. It was perfect. Thanks much. We hope to return!

Unbelievable View

We loved our stay at Makere Cottage in the BVI. The view was so beautiful and the cottage was quite spacious. We spent at least a little time each night on the porch looking down on the tranquil setting of Cane Garden Bay. Brewer's Bay was just a short drive down the opposite side of the ridge and it's an even more peaceful and idyllic beach. I'd highly recommend Makere Cottage for the location, comfort, amenities, and the view!

Amazing Views!!!

We had an amazing stay at Makere Cottage. Everything we needed was right at our fingertips. The views were incredible and we loved the pool. Thank you to Tina for all of your recommendations. At Tina's recommendation we used Jerry's Rentals. They were so easy to deal with! We also took a day sail with Aristocats. Another wonderful experience! I would not hesitate to recommend Makere Cottage to a friend. We hope to return someday soon!

HEAVEN

Do not HESITATE to book this cottage!! The view is unbelievable - stunning for coffee in the mornings and cocktails at night. It feels so private and secluded. The private pool overlooking Cane Garden is a huge splurge. The cottage is equipped with everything that you would need and has an extremely comfortable king size bed. It is in the perfect location on the island to have easy access to everything. Tina (the owner) is wonderful to communicate with and has fabulous recommendations from restaurants to beaches to tours to even which car rental company to use. Every suggestion was perfect. We had a MAGICAL VACATION!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Perfect getaway

Our stay at Makere Cottage was wonderful. The cottage has everything we needed. Plenty of space, well-appointed kitchen, beautiful views, and our daily visitor Tola - the resident friendly and beautiful cat. We spent lazy days at the pool and hours sitting on the porch overlooking Cane Garden Bay. We loved opening all the double doors to allow for indoor/outdoor living. Took us a bit to master driving on the island and to the cottage itself, but once we did, we realized the location was perfect for us. Just a short drive down the hill to Cane Garden Bay and the west side of the island where we discovered beautiful beaches and an assortment of good restaurants. The cottage itself was very clean and we could not have asked for better accommodations. Highly recommend this fantastic rental.

Third time at Makere!

This was our third visit to Tortola and every time we have stayed at Makere, however this was our first time in the house with our 5 year old son. We've always stayed in the cottage but our friends took the cottage this time. So we had both properties which was awesome! As always it was a beautiful stay and charming as the cottage! The house was clean, comfortable beds and everything we needed to cook in the house. The view is one I can never get tired of! I will note that the house does not have air conditioning but since its higher up there's a constant breeze and we even got a little cold at night after the rains stopped. Can't wait to return to Makere!

Fantastic View and Villa

Makere Villa is perched high on a hill over Cane Garden Bay. The view is wonderful. Not only is the view of the bay with lots of boating activities the hills on three side provide a different and interesting sights each afternoone and evening. The villa was very comfortable, well appointed and had everything we needed for a week's stay. The owners were most helpful before and during our stay. They gave us lots of important information with directions to the villa, nearby sights, restaurants etc. They recommended Jerry's Jeep and Car Rental which worked great for us. They were also very helpful in helping us learn the lay of the island. The property manager was also very helpful when we had a question. The villa helped make our week in Paradise perfect.

We – Adam (54), Tina (55), William (24) and Alexandra (22) live in Hampshire, England. Adam was born on Soldier Hill in 1970 while his parents were living and working on Tortola. In 1999 he married Tina and together they decided to build a home on the same spot with the dream that family and friends could visit the island and enjoy holidays together. The result is Makere and we hope you have as much fun there as we do!

Why they chose this property

With its central location Makere Cottage is an ideal setting from which to explore the island. Tortola is best known for its secluded beaches with their gentle surf, golden sands and tall overhanging palm trees. The beaches of Cane Garden Bay and Brewers Bay are both a short 5-minute drive away down opposite sides of Solider Hill. They contrast each other perfectly. Cane Garden Bay offers lively bars and restaurants whilst Brewers Bay is peaceful and quiet with superb swimming and snorkelling. If you want to visit the capital Road Town to shop or take ferries to the many other islands, it too is only a 15-minute drive away.
