Our family of 4 came for 4 days to do some hiking and exploring in Shanendoah. The house is on the river, so peaceful and quiet. We LOVED the firepit. It was great for family time.
Terrific family time for our soon to be empty nest. Great house that allowed our three college aged kids their own space but also great family outings, Kayaking, hiking, visit to Luray and the transportation museum, fire pit/Smores and swimming behind the house. We enjoyed family breakfast and dinners everyday on the deck listening to the flow of the river. Great house for reconnecting after a busy year. The house is new and very clean, super comfortable beds. Would love to come back
Perfect for our family of 7, get away ages 42-12 and 2 small dogs. Could have easily and comfortably fit more. The home was very clean and had everything we needed to make meals in the kitchen. It offers a keurig AND separate drip coffee maker. The bedding was super comfortable. The only downfalls for us - might not be for others - were the steps leading up to the home and the water right in front of the cottage. The steps leading up to the home were tall and steep. Made it hard to climb for our elderly dog. Also it is rocky in this location which cannot be changed by the owners, but important to note you cannot swim here. These issues will not stop us from coming back. We were able to take our kayaks to a public landing a few miles up on Shenandoah River road and took a couple hours to ride the river back to the cottage. very peaceful. Saved money after tubing at Outfitters the day before. Will definitely be back.
Beautiful secluded property on the river. Layout is great for families to have quiet sleeping space away from the family space. All private bath rooms were great for our older kids. Kitchen was well stocked with cookware and the availability of spices was very nice. Paper towels and dish soap were on site and plenty for our 3 day stay. The forecast was for 5 inches of snow, and the owner ensured salt and a shovel were on site which was really nice. The deck and outside gas fireplace area were amazing and we booked again for the summer when we can enjoy the river. The house was very clean and very nicely decorated, new construction. The owners were very responsive to questions and ensured the hot tub was ready for use despite the cold. Great family get away for our older kids.
Check-in was great. The Castaway Cottage was just how it was listed. The back porch was the best part, it was big enough for the whole family to hang out. Unfortunately when we were there it was very hot and the ceiling fans on the porch did not work. Maintenance came to try and fix them but he could not. He even came back a second time to give us another remote control to try. It did not work either. He didn’t get it fixed but was very nice and was very prompt to come out and try and fix it. He even gave us ideas and directions to destinations we wanted to try out. The river was great, the cottage had plenty of canoes and inter tubes we could use. I wish there would have been a better way to enter the river. The cottage is new so maybe one day they can get a deck built you can enter into water from. We still found a way to get into the water. They had a hot tube but we did not use it. The lay out of the cabin was perfect with 4 bedrooms and each had their own bathroom. We loved the cottage and would definitely stay there again.
Our family (5 adults & 7 kids ages 4-10) stayed for 3 nights for a spring break getaway. If you’re looking for a quiet trip to enjoy nature but still close to other attractions this is a great option! The house was beautifully decorated. Love the view from the deck & how the fire pit sits down close to the water. The location had a large island on the other side of the river that we canoed the kids to & spent several hours fishing and exploring. The kitchen was fully stocked & great to have full bathrooms in each bedroom. Communication w owners was great & responsive.
The reason for 4 stars and not 5 was a couple things. Although this property has a hot tub, it is small and ran off a 120v receptacle. It was only 85 degrees our first day and took 48 hours to reach 100 degrees. The kids were fine, but if you’re wanting it for adults, it will be disappointing. In addition, we aren’t sure if chemicals are used to treat it. There were no chlorine tablets in the floating dispenser and didn’t feel or smell like it was regularly treated. After one use, the water was visibly not clean, there was a film on the inside of the tub and it smelled like mildew. The grill bottom was covered w burnt grease & its pan was filled full & caused several grease fires (we cleaned pan). The construction is new but many fixtures & handles were loose and kept falling off. There are also many small trees sticking up from ground all around where land was cleared that we all tripped over many times.
