Everything was wonderful and Dale was an amazing, accommodating host. He met us at the property and gave us a tour/overview and lots of helpful tips for our stay in Joshua Tree. Villa dei Fiore is a magical place and we hope to visit again in the future. We loved seeing the wildlife in the surrounding property and the cave and boulders were so fun to explore. Thanks Dale!

I rated all 5 stars even though we had to cancel our accommodations at the last minute due to illness. I spoke with Dale, and even though we couldn't obtain a refund, he was very understanding and we discussed future options. I'm really looking forward to staying here in the near future and really appreciate the time Dale took to speak with me.

Relaxing stay

My family had the best time at the Villa. My adult kids pretty much spent the entire week in the pool. We hiked the 49 palms hike, which was so pretty and saw so much wildlife in the area. Dale was an excellent host and we enjoyed hearing about his plans and the new Villa.

Beautiful, Unique Oasis in the dessert

The villa was beautiful, spacious and unique. I wished we could have stayed longer than 1 full day because we didn’t even get to lounging poolside. We did enjoy exploring the caves, the wonderful hot tub under the stars, and even meeting the resident roadrunner who greeted us at breakfast. Dale is a spry young man who has lived a full life and is full of stories! He’s built something amazing here.

The best place to stay in Joshua Tree

If you are looking for an idyllic setting on the border of the park, look no further. There is no place like this in terms of location. The backyard is a beautiful boulder field that leads right into park land if you are into hiking on boulders, which we are. Looking around at other properties, there is nothing else like this in terms of the beauty of the landscape. We saw mountain sheep climbing just behind the house and were visited by a kit fox at dusk. The view of the stars from the immaculately kept hot tub is amazing. It is so quiet. A one-of-a-kind getaway. The owner is great and responsive it you need anything. He can recommend hikes in the area away from crowds. If you do go into the main park, it is just a 20 minute drive to the west entrance. The photos are accurate and will give a good idea of what is available in the house. I recommend this place whole heartedly, and will definitely be back!

Incredible oasis!

What an incredible experience we had staying in this beautiful home! The love, care and hard-work that has gone into this villa will leave you speechless. Dale has created an oasis in the middle of harsh, dry terrain. Growing flowers you’d never expect to see in a desert! His story is fascinating and his brilliance evident in the home he’s spent decades creating. The swimming pool surrounded by huge boulders was enjoyed by all of us, especially in the heat wave Joshua tree was having. It was our anniversary while we were there and my husband picked the most beautiful bouquet of flowers for me. Dale is so generous and tells you to pick whatever you want. We also collected some fresh rosemary to make our favorite recipe - rosemary potatoes. Truly there are no words for the beauty that surrounds you. Thank you Dale, for meeting you and for sharing your home, garden and story with us.

the house is a glorious work of art

My husband and I stayed at Dale's home 5 nights. What a delightful, unforgettable experience. The house is, of course, exquisite. Yet every day our experience deepened as we became aware of various features and touches. We felt as if we were living within a work of art. The colors, the layout, the pictures, the details . . . the house has character, soul, and real beauty. Just being there is magical. Even the more mundane details were like those of a 5-star hotel: hooks where they are needed, great beds and bedding, comfortable furniture, clever and useful lighting. The valley immediately behind the house is part of Joshua Tree Park - and hiking through and among the rocks is fascinating. The Park was a treat: we experienced (and hiked it) over two days of sunshine and then drove through days later when it was covered with snow. There are organic restaurants and food shops nearby -- all convenient and fun. Everything was immaculate. Dale was available and immediately responsive whenever we needed him, and Lamar was so helpful as well. The spirit and beauty of the gardens and landscaping and of the entire area was visible through the numerous glass doors and windows. And all this was in the dead of winter! We can only imagine the joy of experiencing the home in various seasons. We are so grateful to Dale for making his beautiful home available. (For those interested, Celine on Fire is extraordinary. Be sure to download the illustrated version).

Just beyond expectations!

Our group ranged in age from 12 to 74, yet this property had something special for each one. I’ll start by bemoaning that our time in this magical oasis was way too short! We stayed only two nights, but definitely recommend longer, as long as you can stay. If you love peace, quiet, natural beauty, wildlife sightings, starry skies, a gorgeous pool, sparkling hot tub, easy hikes or more challenging boulder hopping, this is your place! All 7 of us were enchanted and fell in love with the property. The owner graciously provided a personal tour upon arrival to show us important features of the property, and interesting historical tidbits about his family’s homestead there. You can hike into the adjacent park, climb the boulders in the back yard to great caves, laze by the pool, and if you are lucky (and a bit quiet), you will see wildlife everywhere you look. We hiked a spectacular route the owner recommended, a 5 minute drive from the property. You walk into the park toward a huge outcrop of boulders, and as you gain elevation you can see the entire valley, surrounded by a ring of gorgeous mountains. The hike is easy to moderate, or you can make it much more challenging by actually climbing on the boulders. Our pre-teen kids and an adult climbed the boulders behind the house to the top, and they were so excited about their cave-filled rock-climb afterwards! This hike, literally right in the backyard, was the hi-light of the trip for all 3! The house is charming, very comfortable for seven of us. We used the comfy double sofa bed in living room, and the other three beds were all very comfortable. The kitchen has everything you could need. It is stocked with utensils and Spices galore. We barbecued both nights on the gas grill, as we sipped margaritas on the terrace just outside the kitchen. Every am, we enjoyed our coffee out there as the sun rose on the boulders. We used the hot tub at night, and it was just magical. We were all awed, seeing a sky we had forgotten exists. I could go on and on, but you really have to experience this property for yourself. If you want a 5-star experience, this is it. The beautiful private pool (not an unfiltered tin bucket!) and hot tub simply cannot be matched, both nestled in a circle of huge boulders. Hilton Hotels must be jealous! Our thanks to Dale, the owner, for an unforgettable weekend. Just GO, you won’t regret it!

I had an amazing stay! Such a unique property with large rocks right behind the poolside. You can rock climb on them easily to watch sunrise and sunset. The stargazing is magical! I had planned a trip to Joshua Tree to propose to my girlfriend and when I saw this place I knew it was the one. We can a trip to remember and were already talking about our return before we checked out. Dale is a lovely host who will meet you upon check in and show you around the place. What can I say? Dale's property was amazing and honestly one of my top 3 favorite renatls I've ever stayed in (and we travel a lot)! He was such a wonderful host and we loved learning about all of the rich history and meaning behind the home and its details. We felt so comfortable and relaxed here all week that it was especially difficult to pack up and leave when it was time to return home. From the incredible "backyard" boulder cilmbs to stargazing in the hot tub after a long day hiking in the park, this place was everything we needed and more. The pool is so thoughtfully designed that it was such a treat to see the sky's reflection pictured inside of it. We had a fire every night, slept comfortably, and enjoyed exploring the grounds. The location is great, the property is peaceful and private, and Dale is a charming bonus! :) He also gave us a walking tour of his newest home design that is currently being constructed. It took our breath away! I was so impressed by every thoughtful detail, and I truly feel lucky to have gotten to see it before the inside walls were even built. I'm already anxious to take the next tour when everything is complete! This will be another unique desert treasure thanks to Dale. We will absolutely be back! Thank you again for sharing your home and heart with us!

We had a wonderful, restorative, and peaceful stay at Villa Dei Fiore! We wanted to get out of LA before our son went back to school and this was the perfect respite. The home is private and abuts Joshua Tree National Park. We saw so many animals and the rocks and flora were amazing. The pool is magical and we spent most of our time there watching birds fly by and lizards crawl on the rocks, while escaping the heat. The grounds are covered with rosemary and cypress, and floating in the pool smelling those heat scented plants is such an amazing memory. The interior of the house is full of really cool books on just about every subject you can think of. The cooling system in the house is great and we felt really and comfortable despite the summer heat. The hot tub is clean and set up against a wonderful desert backdrop and there’s a grill and full kitchen for use.Dale is a wonderful host who takes great pride of ownership. I loved hearing about his family’s history at the property and he took us on a tour to show us how everything works. He did a great job of checking in to ensure we were comfortable without being intrusive. He was very accommodating to my 6 year old son. We had a wonderful time and hope to come back for another trip!

Relax and explore all on the same property!

The house was a bit cramped for a family of five but we didn't book this place to be inside. It's an older house so don't expect modern day luxuries but the AC blows cold, the water pressure is great, the kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook meals and there are plenty of books to read if you're into that. Also, there's a great coffee spot (Mas o menos) right down the street which was a plus. Dale is accommodating and will give you a tour of the site during your check in. I know this isn't for everyone so just keep that in mind. The real star of the show is the back side of the property. There's a stand alone jacuzzi which is perfect for relaxing and staring at the sky. The pool is amazing and fenced in and backs up to the sprawling boulder area. My kids loved climbing the boulders and each day they would explore higher and higher. The high cave was their favorite spot. It was great to have that option for the days we didn't feel like making the trek into JTNP. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it.

We are located immediately on the park boundary. You can easily hike straight into the Joshua Tree National Park, Villa dei Fiori is an original homestead that has been renewed by a writer and film designer on 15 acres with a saltwater swimming pool surrounded by boulders and trees and seven terraces. I planted my gardens for others to appreciate. I was an art director for films, including "Battlestar Galactica, " "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", and designing the pirate ship for "The Goonies." I designed music videos for Olivia Newton, Travolta, and Cindy Lauper. Villa dei Fiori and gardens are a movie set, more exotic and secluded than other vacation rentals. I studied philosophy and history at University of Tulsa and received my master's degree in film at UCLA. I hitchhiked across America and Central America, journeys that inspired the characters in my book, chapters which can be viewed for free on "CelineOnFire.com." A drone video of Villa dei Fiori, gardens and wildlife may be seen on VRBO and www.celineonfire.comwildlife.
Working as a journalist for a black newspaper, "The Oklahoma Eagle," I covered Martin Luther King’s march from Selma to Montgomery. I organized concerts for jazz musicians, Baby Face Willette and Odetta, and opened The Bastille, a folk music and dance club. I produced and directed the film "Death of the Red Planet," in 35mm Cinemascope, quadraphonic sound, the first film created by lasers. , filmed in the laboratories of Cal-Tech. Praised by "American Cinematographer," and "Hollywood Reporter," the film was invited to the Cannes Film Festival and played in 600 theaters across America. My first film design was "Battlestar Galactica." I worked with Steven Spielberg ("The Goonies"), Terry Gilliam ("Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas",) Paul Verhoeven ("Hollowman".) I wrote the screenplay for "East of the Moon," and " Celine on Fire." My novel, "Celine on Fire," is set in 1950s Paris and behind the Iron Curtain.

Why they chose this property

I first came to Joshua Tree in 1968 when I visited my family who were homestead settlers from Oklahoma who moved to California in the 1930s. My grandmother's sisters homesteaded in Joshua Tree in the early 1950s on Whitefeather Road, above the civic center and hospital a short distance from the Joshua Tree National Monument. Revena and Gwendolyn were original settlers. I purchased the property in 1988 and restored the original homestead house by taking it down to the studs and removing interior walls to open up the living room and kitchen, and installed thirteen French doors that open onto six terraces with pergolas laden with fragrant climbing plants.
I began the garden thirty-five years ago planting a grove of Italian Stone pines, now 35 years old,. The terraces and surrounding sculpted berms of decomposed granite have been sculpted over the years. Bighorn sheep often come off the park into our valley of the moon where bobcats, kit foxes, and roadrunners roam.

What makes this property unique

You will will find solidute and tranquility immediately adjacent to the Joshua Tree National Park. Despite the government shut down, we are on the park boundary. You can easily hike straight into the Joshua Tree National Park, Consequently, we have abundant wildlife. Children and adults love the three-chamber cavern partially open to the sky with a fire pit for dinner parties close to house. We provide linens and pillows for extra guests. Barbecue is on Kitchen terrace with a giant Joshua Tree in the boulders. Villa dei Fiori's boundary is immediately on the Joshua Tree National Park. Our Valley of the Moon is perfect for bouldering and rock climbing and exploring the canyons of the park adjacent to Villa dei Fiori..
Large saltwater pool surrounded by boulders and oversized Jacuzzi spa for six. Many windows and 13 glass French doors open to garden and boulder views from every room, the scent of cypress and French lavender enveloping the house.
