About the host
Hosted by Paula Okkola
Hello! I’m Paula, and I have been living on this beautiful island surrounded by clean waters and changing seasons for 35 years. My passions include enjoying the unique archipelago landscape with my two small dogs and being part of the Puumala community through various organizations. In my free time, I like picking mushrooms and baking . Besides this company, I also run the popular island restaurant Niinipuu, which focuses on local food and serves as a reception for our cottages in the summer. Hosting is my main business and a way of life for me. I truly enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds, being a good host and sharing my culture with guests. I feel it is a privilege for me to introduce my own lifestyle, Finland’s clean nature and our unique accommodations with my guests.
Why they chose this property
“Niinisaari” is an island in the middle of Lake Saimaa, where I live and where all of our cottages & villas are. Niinisaari is part of the municipality of Puumala, located in Southern Savonia. The island is connected to the mainland by a free ferry. You feel a sense of calm and focus when you know that lake Saimaa is never far away. The island is a very special place that influences my lifestyle. I love to preserve the local culture, the traditional buildings and landscapes, and the pure and vibrant archipelago nature ecosystem. There are 200 other locals living on the island who share these values and sense of community. The atmosphere is international all year round, as our small municipality is home to people from different countries, who are attracted by the peacefulness, nature and Lake Saimaa. Fun fact: Our small Puumala municipality has only about 2,000 residents, but more coastline than the whole of France.
