History of Castle on the grounds of Stormont House: Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking a bend in the river the castle was much prized for its strategic location. The all-powerful O’Briens of Thomond laid claim to the place and took up residence there for a few centuries.
During the sieges of Limerick in 1690/91 it drew the attention of William of Orange and his lieutenant-general, Godert de Ginkel. The ‘grim Dutch gunner’ trained his ordnance on the castle destroying it. The ruins are just inside the gate of Stormont while behind the house is an area of old woodland.

We had a wonderful stay. The house was perfect for our family to be able to cook together, play games, and explore the grounds. The kitchen is well stocked and has an amazing formal dining room for meals. The grounds are beautiful to walk and the view from the home of the Shannon River are lovely. WiFi was strong and supported streaming and Zoom calls. The host was lovely and extremely responsive.

Thanks so much for the lovely review Ranae. I'm so glad you enjoyed the house and the grounds around the area. I hope you made special memories there during your stay.
The house was lovely, clean, well furnished (in a way that makes you feel like you’re visiting somewhere special), and spacious. We loved waking up in the morning to the spectacular views and returning home after sight seeing to a company friendly kitchen and comfortable living room. The hosts who passed off the keys were an added treat: gave us the inside scoop to get away from more touristy attractions to more local ones, and made us feel like we were friends.

We met up with our German based family in Castleconnell. We were 3 generations (13-80 years old) and each one of us truly hated to say goodbye to Stormont House and the quaint village. Upon our arrival, Frances met us. She is a genteel and gracious person. The house had fresh flowers and a well stocked and artistically arranged bowl of fruit which the 6 of us thoroughly enjoyed. The house is spacious and airy and inviting. We all had room to spread out. Our son-in-law is an avid fisherman and he enjoyed just walking out the door to the River Shannon and doing his meditative fishing. Cos helped him with rods and bait, etc. The views are mesmerizing and the hiking trails are many. We could walk from the house into town in 5 minutes. However, the house itself felt very secluded and private. We would love to come back next Easter which is our annual reunion time with our German family. A truly special time for our family!
