About this property
Country School House at Solidago Farm
Unique, cozy small farm experience!
A piece of historic charm in picturesque Chester county, first records dating back to c. 1869 and giving Ground Hog College its name. Previously 1 of 5 public schools serving the rural community, located on a quiet road with beautiful forests to explore and a working farm with fresh organic produce. You'll experience a romantic and cozy stay that is close to Longwood Gardens, Cheslyn nature preserve, and local wineries. The school house is directly attached to a full time residence for the Solidago farmers & 2 friendly dogs that you are most likely to meet upon arrival. This is a working residence complete with a lively yard full of free range chickens, ducks, and sheep. Everyone is friendly but please be mindful of the electric fence that keeps our livestock contained. Along the property is almost 50 acres of forested land with cleared paths for your enjoyment. The forest borders our 2 acre organic food production that you are also welcome to visit. You might hear us going to and fro as we are a working farm. This property was acquired by our family and the schoolhouse has been completely renovated in 2023. We are happy to welcome guests to enjoy our little piece of history. The area is full of activities that is guaranteed to suite everyone's interest. We are down the road from ChesLen preserve and Northbrook canoe company, both places you can spend the day on the water or immersed in nature or a moments drive from downtown West Chester, where you can grab a drink and do some shopping. We are surrounded by delicious food and only an hour from the city life of Philly, truly the perfect balance of city and rural life. Guest access You have full access to the school house which is complete with full kitchen, bathroom, sun room and cellar that contains a washer/drier. The patio out front has a bbq, tables and chairs. There is also a firepit for your enjoyment. The attached stone house, backyard, garage and barn are private. We ask that you avoid venturing behind the stone house as to keep our farmers yard private. Additional visitors to the schoolhouse are permitted with host approval. No smoking or vaping in the schoolhouse.

The property is very secluded and serene. Your view is rolling green hills and sheep grazing on pasture. The school house has been renovated beautifully and is super cozy. We enjoyed the crackling wood in fire pit each day. Enjoying some of the seasonal offerings from the farm was wonderful!! Thank you Solidago Farm hosts :)

We very much enjoyed our stay. The place was renovated beautifully and clean and fully stocked with kitchen utensils, toiletries, and even firewood. The farm stand was a great perk. We loved the fresh pickles and herbs.
This place is magical. I loved everything about it from the perfect location to the beautifully designed interior, to farm life around the property. It felt so homey right away and I can’t wait to go back already.
What a wonderful and peaceful place! Super easy check in/out, very private, clean and comfortable. Design and decor are spot on and you have everything needed to make breakfast or a full meal. Just a gem of a place to stay!
Amazing property in a historic building situated in a beautiful rural setting. Located within easy access to the various museums, gardens and historic sites in the Brandywine Valley. Thoughtful hosts. Would definitely recommend.
The entire cottage was adorable. Clean, very well appointed and very comfortable. Communication with the host was informative and timely. We would definitely book our next trip here again.
This property was amazing. By far one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Donna was super generous, thoughtful and proactive in making our stay pleasant. This is 100% the spot I will stay in when visiting West Chester.
This was our second stay at the Country School House at Solidago Farm. It is a unique property, quiet, cozy, and beautifully maintained. The kitchen and bathrooms were well supplied for all our needs. Our host, Donna, was extremely helpful and accessible. We hope to return in the future.
I loved my winter retreat at Solidago Farm. The space is wonderful - somehow managing to be cozy and spacious at the same time. Even though the outside temperatures were in the single digits, I was warm and secure. Everything was very clean and well-appointed, I used the kitchen every day to cook full meals. And being able to partake of the farm’s winter offerings: fresh eggs, squash, greens, and the most delicious kimchi was an unexpected bonus. Communication with the host was prompt and accommodating, although there wasn’t much I needed beyond more firewood. I look forward to returning in another season, so I can take advantage of the charming sunroom and walk the beautiful grounds!
We spent eight nights at the Country School House at Salidago Farm. Our stay was so relaxing. The School House was immaculate and well-equipped. We have already planned to return next year.
Charming lodgings in a beautiful country setting, complete with resident farm animals and fresh farm produce. The former schoolhouse is beautifully remodeled and thoughtfully equipped with every convenience. Highly recommended.
This property is amazing! Just as gorgeous as the pics! Just spent the weekend but sm coming bsck for a long stay and I’m really looking forward to it.
We chose this location due to its proximity to Longwood Gardens, while still remaining in the countryside. It exceeded our expectations and, despite it's solitude, was only a short drive to dining and vineyards. The hosts were accommodating and it was a pleasure chatting with them about the history of this cozy cottage. Overall, 10/10!
The school house is immaculately restored and furnished. Everything we needed! From the fire pit to breakfast recommendations to television and privacy shades, we could not have asked for more. We plan to return for our next Longwood visit.
I stayed for 6 weeks while visiting family in the area. It’s a beautifully renovated historic schoolhouse on a quaint farm in the beautiful hills of Chester County. It was so rekaxing having coffee on the patio listening to the chickens pecking nearby and hearing the occasional tinkle of the milk cow bell nearby. Not to mention the delicious farm fresh eggs I made for breakfast! The property has everything you could possibly need…,including a generator when a storm knocked out power for 2-3 days! I’ll definitely be back!
The location and accommodations are beautiful. Out in the country but minutes from Longwood Gardens, Brandywine River Museum, and Winterthur. There was a plumbing issue and the hosts did everything they could to resolve it, and were very forthcoming and accommodating. It was disappointing but based on the property and the professionalism of the hosts I would definitely stay in the future.
Over the last fifteen years my wife and I have stayed in dozens of short term rental offerings, from Maine to South Carolina. This was by far the best site we have ever experienced. The renovation of this 100 year plus school house was done by the owner at a level of appropriateness to the historical site and at a quality of workmanship that is extraordinary. The surrounding area was left natural and their many animals were fun to watch and they enjoyed their life there. World Class all the way!
If you are looking for a stay that is first class, well-appointed, relaxing, peaceful, and a bit out-of-the-ordinary, check out this place! The hosts have done such a great job on the remodel! This property is situated on a quiet country road but is only 6 miles from places to get food and shop. We loved hearing the chickens, ducks, pigs, and goats! Any hotel could not compare.
This was absolutely what we needed! A nice reset! Home away from home! The drive there was beautiful and once you get inside, it’s exactly as it is listed! The house was neat, clean, and artfully decorated. The home had everything we needed to make breakfast and dinner each day! A huge perk was having the farm-stand right outside the front door! Farm fresh eggs, bacon, gold potatoes, and candied jalapeños! Delish. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty’s of nature with the convenience of being able to hop in the car and drive 5-7 miles to stores to get what you need. We stayed in almost the entire time except to visit the Longwood Gardens and grab sushi which were excellent recommendations by the owners! The only disappointment was we couldn’t stay longer. Thank you again for the memories. We will be back in the fall to hike the trails and explore and give the farm animals more pets!
It's hard to know where to begin with this incredible place. It strikes the perfect balance between historic charm and modern comfort—rustic yet thoughtfully updated. Every detail was considered, and the result is a space that feels warm, cozy, and inviting. The location is ideal—just about 20 minutes from all the major sights, with some fantastic restaurants nearby. One of our favorite parts was watching the chickens, sheep, and cows across the street—it added a special, peaceful touch. We're big on cooking during our travels, and the kitchen here was top-notch. The stove, oven, and cookware exceeded expectations. We truly felt at home.
