Welcome to The Legendary, our beautifully restored mid century modern historic home just off the charming courthouse square in La Grange, TX.

The Legendary is named for its original owner Sheriff Jim Flournoy. Built in the 1950s for Sheriff Jim and his wife Gladys, this charming home is centrally located in downtown La Grange which kept the legendary lawman within walking (or horse riding!)distance to his office in the old jail and the county courthouse.

Situated on a quiet, oversized lot filled with heritage oaks and a large inviting back yard, this spacious home and small town retreat offers the peaceful, private feeling of being on the edge of town. Conveniently, it is also a short three blocks away from the charming downtown square where you can dine, shop local antiques and boutiques, visit the Texas heroes museum in the historic jail (lots more on Sheriff Jim there!) or stop by the beautiful Fayette County courthouse for a walk through history. Or simply grab a cup of coffee or glass of wine on the square and enjoy small town living. The house is also within walking distance of the KC Hall which offers events throughout the year. Also a few minutes walk away is the Colorado River. Several wineries are just a short drive away and a scenic 16 mile drive gets you out to Round Top for dining, dancing and antiquing to your heart’s delight!

This home has been recently and beautifully restored with the comforts of home but the feeling of a retreat in mind. With over 2300 square feet of living space, this home is roomy and tranquil. The great room is designed for relaxing and spending time with the ones you love. The three bedrooms are spacious and the two and a half bathrooms beautifully updated. The backyard is an oversized oasis with a large covered patio with a grill, fan and festive string lights for outdoor living. It is the perfect place to have your morning coffee and listen to the birds as you watch for the deer who frequently graze across the field beyond the backyard. In the evening, come back to gather around the fire pit or play some backyard corn hole while you bbq with your friends and family.

We have designed and decorated our home to honor the life and legacy of Sheriff Jim Flournoy who served as Fayette County Sheriff from 1946-1980. Also called “Big Jim”, La Grange residents who grew up with Big Jim in charge remember the towering 6’4” or 6’7” depending on who you asked as legends go, lawman always had a silverbelly cowboy hat on his head, handmade cowboy boots on his feet, and butterscotch in his pocket to offer them. He spent 60 years of his life in law enforcement holding the honor of being the longest serving Fayette County Sheriff. During his early law enforcement career, Sheriff Jim was responsible for jailing a notorious member of Bonnie and Clyde’s gang. Then in the 1970s and 80s, he gained Hollywood notoriety when Burt Reynolds played a character based on his likeness in a campy movie that told the story of the Chicken Ranch and Big Jim’s fight to keep a local legend alive and to teach city folks to mind their own business. Before becoming sheriff, Big Jim served as a Texas Ranger for two years during World War II and was inducted into the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame. He was a man of his time: a no nonsense cattleman, a larger than life lawman, and a La Grange legend.

The Living room has ample cozy seating in front of a new gas fireplace and a large Smart TV along with a table for games or puzzles and a reading nook. The dining room table has generous space for 6. The kitchen is built for entertaining with a double oven, warming drawer, 5 burner gas stove and large central island that seats two for a casual meal. Keurig single serve coffee maker is available along with a regular 12 cup coffee pot for brewing coffee for the whole crew.

The bedrooms are outfitted with smart TVs, brand new pillow top mattresses and cozy linens.

There is no smoking in our home and absolutely no drugs on the premises. Sheriff Jim wouldn’t have it!

You will to, so please treat it as you would your own. We have taken great care and expense to make this a lovely place for guests and hope you will return for a future stay as well! Please refrain from rearranging furniture, observe quiet hours from midnight to 6am to respect our wonderful neighbors, and lock the doors whenever you leave the house. Please note that there are exterior cameras for security purposes.
