About this property
A Slope Side Apartment by Alyeska Resort. Private, Affordable
A Slope Side Apartment is an economical alternative to Hotels, condos and B&B's. This private apartment has all the comforts and amenities to make yourself at home in an Alaskan mountain setting. With a separate entrance on the first floor, this unit has one bedroom with a queen and single bed and the couch/futon pulls out to another double bed in the living room. There is a washer and dryer in the unit and soap is provided. It is in a perfect location to walk to the restaurants and shops nearby, yet the street is very quiet and away from any traffic. A biking/walking trail is located two minutes from your door.
A Slope Side Apartment is located in Girdwood, just 35 miles south of Anchorage (50 mins. from Anchorage International Airport). Travelling down on the very scenic Seward Highway, you will enjoy specatular scenery and arrive to the friendly feeling of this small town in the forest. This area is considered the northern most expanse of the Pacific temperate rain forest. The lush mountains in the summer receive more than 600 inches of snow in the winter. Hanging glaciers surround the valley, connecting to the massive ice feilds of Prince William Sound. Bears, moose, dall sheep, mountain goats, eagles and other wildife is often seen in the area and right in town. Girdwood's small community is 'Alaska' and well worth the drive out of Anchorage.

About the host
Your host
Ken & Thalia moved to Alaska in 1989 from the New England area. Ken has been running an eco-adventure guiding service called Wilkinson Expeditions. He's a trained photographer and naturalist and has guided private groups in Alaska and other locations since 1995.Thalia is an elementary school art teacher and runs a summer art camp for kids in Girdwood We both like gardening, there is a green house on location and together we built the wood fired sauna in the back yard.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with Alaska. We bought the house in Girdwood because of the outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities nearby. It is not far from Anchorage and the drive is one of the most scenic drives in the country. We see alot of wildlife in the area and back yard and the photo opportunities are endless. Girdwood is a small town surrounded by hundreds of square miles of National and State Forest. With less than 1500 people when we moved here, now approximately 2200, it is very friendly with a strong community spirit. We both like winter and skiing and this small town offers the Alyeska Ski Resort, many cross country trails and lots of snow.
