About this property

Beautiful 16th-Century Colonial House in Central Antigua

Our family bought this colonial house in 1965 and has restored it over the last 50 years. The house, built in 1568, retains old world charm... The house is simply decorated in a Spanish/Guatemalan style.

La Casa del Sol is the former residence of the 16th century Governor of Guatemala. Built around a central courtyard garden, the house has the original cupola, dome ceiling and three-foot wide stone walls.

The house is located in the quiet northeast side of the colonial section of town. It is a short walk to central park and town center as well as restaurants and stores.

Master bedroom has a double bed, skylight and Colonial window. Second bedroom is equipped with 2 twin beds and fireplace. Third bedroom has a double bed and two single beds.

There are three bathrooms with hot showers. Small living room has satellite TV, and there is a large formal dining room. The house has wifi internet.

Self-catering with complete kitchen: gas stove, refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker, bottled water (included free of charge), dishes and cooking utensils. Eat breakfast outside under veranda in full sunlight.

Housekeeper and family live in separate house on premises available for cooking, laundry, housekeeping at additional cost. Nearby bakery for fresh sweet bread and hot hand made tortillas can be delivered daily. Practice your Spanish with friendly local housekeeping family.

Relax in a comfortable yet simple home. Tranquil, picturesque neighborhood, yet in center of colonial Antigua. No need for a car, everything within walking distance. Beautiful sunsets from rooftop terrace. Tropical plants and exotic bird watching from a sunny seat in the patio. Cozy fireplace for cool evenings. Restaurants of all categories nearby.

A museum!

This place is a gem, absolutely adorable. The moment you walk in is a time capsule, so many treasures, to much to look at, is a museum! All the details are bespoke, you can spend two days just looking at the furniture and the decor. It has his own couple little libraries with interesting reads and very informative if you have the time. Location is walkable to restaurants, park and stores, and the host had amazing communication skills, I recommend this place 100% Cultured people’s dream!

Casa del Sol

We had a fantastic week long stay in this beautiful restored Colonial, private residence right in the heart of Antique. A large courtyard with flowers and trees anchors the open space that we loved to hangout in and play games, eat and just enjoy a beer or book. The bedrooms, lounge area restrooms and kitchen all border the courtyard. Clean with modern facilities that don’t take away from the charm of the historic property. Jon was great to work with, fast, responsive and very knowledgeable. Maria was kind enough to agree to cook breakfast for our family of 6 “yum”!! A fantastic family trip!!!!

A perfect stay

This is a lovely, well-maintained time-capsule of of a house close to everything. Expect party music from the hotel next door on weekends but it's joyful, free, and stops at 10:30 pm. We all (family) enjoyed ourselves.

Absolutely perfect place to stay

This is one of those reviews I hesitate to write because I want to keep this place a secret so it won't be booked forever. Casa del Sol was perfect for me, my 14 year old daughter and her friend. We stayed for a week and wished to stay longer. It is beautiful, comfortable, and safe. I will be back!

Perfect place …

What can I say?… La Casa del Sol delivers what it advertises, it delivers what it says, it delivers what it promises and more … perfect location, available and kind House manager, enough spaces and rooms for everyone to enjoy and to have some private times and moments, a large central garden —-just beautiful and refreshing … many seating areas to study (especially if you are learning Spanish or to just read and relax), and, again, the location is perfect … closer to everything.. and if you get hungry, even closer to one of the more famous street food vendor in Antigua, just around the corner … it is a place to live and a place to make many memorable memories … it is indeed “La Casa del Sol ”… and the owner is perfect to work with…

Heaven

Casa del Sol was perfect. Spacious, comfortable, historic, beautiful, casual, relaxing, close to everything. We enjoyed the flowers blooming in the bright, sunny courtyard, the opportunity to relax, away from the Semana Santa crowds on the internal veranda, and explore all the pieces of history and artisenia displayed throughout the compound. With 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and high ceilings, our multi-generational family of 5 could spread out for privacy, or congregate for movie watching or outdoor dining. Maria was an excellent resource to have as a caretaker on the property. She kept a low profile but was always available to cook a meal, do some laundry, or give advice on where to go for this or that. I loved our stay and will return again for a longer one.

Perfect for our family

We stayed at this fantastic home for a week in June and had a wonderful experience in Antigua. It was a perfect fit for my husband, our 3 kids and my parents. It was great to have all of the outdoor space within the home. We loved having coffee in the morning looking out at the garden. It was also nice to have the space for the kids to run around and play in the courtyard. The kitchen was fully equipped and it was handy to have the option to have some meals at the house. The owners even thoughtfully left coffee and fruit which was so nice to have on hand the morning after we arrived. We couldn't ask for a more convenient location. It was easy to walk everywhere we wanted to go and if the kids got tired we could take an inexpensive tuk tuk or taxi ride home. We loved our time in Antigua and would definitely stay in this house again if we ever get the change to go back.

With Age Come Grace

I have been using VRBO since it's inception. This is by far the most beautiful and peaceful place I have had the pleasure to stay in. As Jon said in an email, she's an old lady and they are protective of her. Like an abuela, she is welcoming, opening her doors to an oasis of calm in the middle of Antigua. Like an abuela, she has her wisdom gained from a long life. It's found in the peace of the garden, the pleasure in being outside under the porch roof during the afternoon rain. I could go on and on (obviously). Marie, the caretaker, is lovely. She lets you have your space but is there when needed. The house is nestled on a quieter street in town but all is immediately accessible. I look forward to returning.

Amazing History Great Location

We stayed at Casa del Sol for over a week during the holidays while our family attended language school. The house and grounds are stunning, the pictures are good but don't do it justice. It was great to have room for our family to spread out among the bedrooms (which aren't located right on top of each other) and have space around the house, courtyard, and kitchen to read, study, game, and relax. Since we arrived on Christmas Eve, i contacted the host ahead of time to see if we could arrange for some necessities and groceries to be purchased prior to everything closing. Not only did the host and the house staff get everything set, but the soup that they prepared was so good we now make it at home! The location is good - its a short 4 block walk to the markets around La Merced and the Arch, but it is distant enough (and not on the main route in/out of town) that it is relatively quiet at night - Antigua is a pretty loud town, full of celebrations, so this is key if you sleep lightly. The staff was great at giving us tips on where the processions and parades would be during the holidays, and where to find good local bread and food. The historical notes around the house are awesome as well - only in Guatemala can you stay in a place that was built before Jamestown, VA was even established.

A wonderful stay in real Antigua

This was an amazing stay - the Casa del Sol provided every comfort, but also an opportunity to participate in the unique history that makes Antigua a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The house itself is lovely - built in the traditional Spanish style with wide covered "corredors" with seating areas opening onto a magnificent enclosed central garden, and each ample room - living, dining, a super inviting eat-in kitchen, and the two bedrooms (the master with a large walk-in changing room and bath) - all accessed from the corredors. The connection of outdoor beauty and inside comfort is typical of traditional Antigua houses, and this is one of them. It's located in one of the most historic - yet most peaceful - parts of Antigua, just a few blocks from the famous central plaza and the cathedral, and directly across a cobbled street from one of the most famous Spanish convents, Las Capuchinas. The house was first occupied in 1568, yet it fully inhabits our own time, with every modern convenience - flat screen TV, good internet. And the attention of the wonderful housekeeper, Maria, who makes staying there effortless. If you want a place that's superficially Antigua but feels like the Marriott, this isn't it - it's the real deal, and will definitely be one of the best parts of your stay in Antigua.

Oooozes Colonial Spanish Charm

Casa del Sol was the perfect lodging choice for our 8 day stay in Antigua in early December, 2023. This rental is exactly as advertised-plus some. Charming 16th century Colonial Spanish home. All rooms open out onto the portals and further into the beautifully landscaped cobblestone central courtyard, creating lovely expanded living space. Flowering plants abound, creating an inviting oasis in the heart of the city. Expertly decorated with both Spanish and local Mayan artwork and antiques. Easily and comfortably accommodates 6-7 guests. This residence is less than a 5-block walk to the City’s Central Plaza-the heart of Antigua. Easy walking distance to a wide variety of restaurants and bars, the historic churches, convents and plenty of ruins that reflect the city’s 18th & 19th centuries destruction by earthquakes, but also revealing the marvelous architectural structures laid bare by the forces of nature. Jon, one of the property’s owners and our primary contact before, during and after our rental, was great to work with and more than willing to answer questions regarding the home as well as Antigua & recommendations for dining out. I’ve stayed in VRBO properties around the globe for decades and have been a VRBO host myself in the past. This property is the real deal and exudes history and charm in a convenient Center-city Antigua location. Would stay here again in a heartbeat!!!

450 year old home with much history

We stayed for about 14 days at Casa del Sol. In asking around town many people remember David Jinkling who bought a ruin in 1965 and began restoring it for his young family. The house really has two histories, one of the Jinking who still own it and all the items they collected in the second half of the 20th century, and an early history which includes all the families that have occupied the house since its beginning. Their names are recorded on one of the walls. One feels as if they are living in a museum. A great place to stay if you are interested in old architecture and history. The house is relatively comfortable and has everything you would need for your stay. There is a pretty stone courtyard with lovely plantings. A very nice young family lives on the back of the property and the children keep to themselves unless you invite them into your area. They are very quiet. The house is directly across the street from ruin Capachine. Although not the quietest place in town, anywhere within the old part of Antigua will have a certain amount of noise and traffic. We would stay there again but we just bought a bed and breakfast here so now we have our own house to stay in.

Great for Families

My three daughters (a preschooler and two teenagers) and I spent an unforgettable month at Casa del Sol (July 2012). The location is convenient and safe—the house is directly across the street from Las Capuchinas and two doors up from the upscale El Convento Boutique Hotel—Las Capuchinas has a guard on duty during opening hours (9-5) and El Convento has a guard 24/7—so someone is always on the street watching out. My teenage daughters spent much of the month taking Spanish lessons at nearby Ixchel Spanish School and they walked on their own to and from their lessons each day. The house is also conveniently close to some fantastic restaurants, delis, and bakeries—La Cuevita de los Urquizu is just around the corner and serves traditional Guatemalan dishes. We simply took a big bowl from the house and had La Cuevita fill it with a couple of portions of a main dish and took it back home to supplement our own meal. You can also pick up a roasted chicken and fresh baguettes at the Epicure deli and bakery (across from El Carmen Ruins). Nearly each morning, I’d walk down to Dona Luisa Xicotencatl bakery and restaurant (opens at 7 am) to bring home some of their wonderful yogurt, banana bread, and other baked goods for breakfast (croissants, whole wheat bread, muffins, etc.). Having Maria and Victor and their two daughters living on the property made all the difference. It’s like a homestay in some respects, but you have the privacy of your own home. Maria truly helped us get acquainted with Antigua—I accompanied her to the mercado the first few days to buy fruits, vegetables, and meats and then learned to do all the shopping on my own. She also helped us tremendously when we needed to see the doctor and get medicine from the pharmacy. Maria always kept the house very clean—what a pleasure to come home from a long day out exploring to find the bathrooms and kitchen in order. Simply having another family nearby helped us feel safe and secure. When you are in the house, you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time—the architecture is beautiful with one room having a cupola and another a beautiful domed ceiling. The rooms and patios are decorated so nicely with wooden furniture, paintings, ceramics, etc. It’s almost like a museum that you’ve been able to sneak into and spend the night in! My 3 year-old loved playing most of the day in the large garden which she appropriately called “the park.

Not great for my family

I regret to give this house a negative review but I feel it would have been helpful to know this before we stayed at the house. My family stayed at this house for 1 full week and it did not go well. - Pro: The house is a historical gem and a good location. - Con: The homes furnishings are like living in a museum, however the basics likes beds, blankets and sofas are old and worn down. The white pillow cases had stains and the sofa in the living room is old and not comfortable at all. Also the street outside is busy so the front bedroom has the sound of traffic all evening. - Pro: The caretakers Maria and Victor are nice. Anita the house manager is nice but has little knowledge of the details you may have made with the home owners. - Con: This is NOT a private house. The property is shared with the caretakers, their visitors, and the property manager walking through the central garden all day. The house is open concept to the garden so you have to be exposed to the people walking through if you are getting coffee, going to the bathroom or just moving from room to room. We had major issues with people walking through the property. They seem to have many visitors or movement in the morning between 7am and 9 am with people coming and going. Our major issue was when a gardener we did not know or know was coming came into the garden area and proceeded to change his clothing in front of my two small children and myself. We had no clue he was the gardener so this completely freaked me out and violated our scene of safety or security in the home. He fully exposed himself to my kids and when I talked to Maria she seemed to act like that is normal behavior but she did ask him to leave and come back in an hour. I got a response from one of the home owners but never from the homeowner I had made the reservation with, and this was only after emailing them the two previous days about all the visitors and disruptions to our stay. * Overall I feel this house it is not suited for families with kids under 12 or women traveling alone.

Beautiful getaway in the heart of Antigua

The home was just beyond outstanding. It is everything you see in these pictures and more. Gorgeous resplendant garden and incredibly historical home, it's amazing just how quiet it still is despite being where it is. The home is located on a street where there is only another boutique hotel and some ruins, but still very close to everything. Communicating with Jon was really easy and pleasant, and Maria the hostess is soooo sweet. We loved spending time with her. All in all, my family knew from that first day that we would want to return here year after year. We could not have been happier with the stay. I was absolutely obsessed with the garden and the terrace. Don't pass this place up.

Pleasant, spacious, and historical close to town and amenities

Built originally for the Governor of Guatemala in the early 1500/1600’s, this house was purchased by the current owners in 1967. We loved — the cool breeze anytime when sitting in the beautiful garden courtyard — large living area with kitchen, 3 bedrooms, 5 single beds, and a double bed — 10 minute walk to town center — Holy Week procession on Friday passed on the street a few yards/meters away (that was so convenient) — about 3-4 blocks from the famous arch de Catherine (shown in many Antigua pictures) — close to shops and markets. — on-site property manager who is very responsive (hire Maria to do your laundry and see the meticulous cleaning and folding) — Jon was easy to work with and responded quickly. A couple of items to be aware of — the bedroom with 3 beds closest to street can have some street noise in the morning. The shutter keeps it very dark, though. — Internet worked well the whole week. But, the service isn’t fast enough to support large streaming such as movies. — A/C and heating is not common in Antigua and isn’t available. But, it isn’t really necessary because the temperatures don’t vary much and the court yard has a steady, cool breeze. — for those who need a squishy soft bed, the beds are firm, but comfortable. In short, it’s a pleasant stay with lots of space, authentic Antigua feel, and close to many features. P.S. Ride a “Tuk Tuk” at least once for the experience. Hang on and remember to breathe :D

We are a family of three generations, spread over the USA who travel to Antigua as often as possible to enjoy the perfect climate and friendly local Guatemalan people and to relax in our simple, comfortable home.

Why they chose this property

Antigua has a perfect climate, historic and ancient interests, a friendly diverse population of artists, expats, native Mayan people and young travelers. Casa del Sol is located in the colonial core close to the central plaza but in a quiet street away from the busiest part of town.

What makes this property unique

Hearing 16th century churchbells chiming the hours through the night, watching flocks of parrots squawking overhead, feeling the warm tropical sun and watching the dramatic sunset over three volcanoes.
