About this property
A modern villa in a unique setting with stunning views. The real Greece.
This is a beautiful villa that combines comfort with elegance and makes the most of its location: set into the side of a hill with a path through its own wooded gardens running down to a pretty pebble beach below. The 3 and a half acre (14 hectare) plot is extremely rare because it was planted forty years ago with every local species of plant imaginable. There are olives galore, a lemon grove, orange, fig, pomegranate, grapes and the full range of wild herbs. Feel free to help yourself! In the spring the wildflowers are breathtaking, we even have some rare orchids. From the house at the top of this valley there is no better view in the Peloponnese. Even the sun sets in precisely the right spot. The bay is perfect for both children and strong swimmers and, apart from August, you may well have the whole beach to yourselves. The building of Villa Artemis is told entertainingly in the best-selling book 'Blue Skies and Black Olives' by the broadcaster John Humphrys and his son Christopher. Although we limit the villa to 14 people we have an arrangement with the excellent apartments in the next bay that can sleep another 20 people. Get in touch if you are a larger group!
Christopher, the owners' son, is British but lives in Greece. Although based in Athens, he often stays in the small cottage at the bottom of the property. He is happy to give advice on the local area, point out the best places to eat and generally make sure that your holiday is as enjoyable as possible. A fluent Greek speaker, he is always available on the phone to deal with any problems or questions.

The photos really don't do this property justice. It was beautiful. From the minute we arrived we loved every minute. Our family ranged from 16 year olds to 80 year olds and we all found the villa perfect. The air conditioned rooms are a welcome relief from the heat and the gorgeous pool was amazing to come back to each time after exploring the area. Would highly recommend and hopefully we will be back to visit very soon.

Polly thank you so much for your kind words. VA is a labour of love for me and it means a lot when people appreciate it. I do hope to see you again.
Very best,
Christopher
A breathtakingly beautiful location with superb spacious accommodation and welcoming, but not intrusive host. Be prepared to tackle an unmade road down to the property, but the destination is worth every bump! The air-conditioning was especially welcome.

Thank you Margery, it was a pleasure meeting all of you. I hope to see you again sometime!
A dream of a villa. We had an amazing time. The views are staggering. Out across the sea, for miles and miles, all framed by the Peloponnese and Methana. The house is perfect. Stylish without being precious, and very well-equipped and usable. The pool and outdoor dining area are wonderful and it's a joy to be able to trundle down the steps to the near-private beach below. The photos absolutely do not do it justice; and Christopher, the owner, couldn't have been nicer. Communicative, helpful charming - he allowed us to arrive early and leave late. The immediate area is fascinating and beautiful - Methana is extraordinary, and Galatas is a wonderful port town, while the amazing theatre at Epidavros is just a short drive away. I can't recommend the villa more highly. We had the most perfect holiday, with more than enough room for twelve of us. Thank you. We could have stayed for ever ...
Start and finish with the location - quite superb. Tranquil, a view over the sea and the Pelopennese that starts in the morning with a golden glow and finishes in the evening with the most astonishing sunsets. A well equipped, comfortable home, always a shady spot in baking July. A few minutes walk down to "our" beach with gorgeous swimming - and basically nobody else there. Stroll along to the Ammos beach bar for a quencher and basic - but good - food.Galatas, about 15 minutes drive - the most wonderful views across to Poros, take the water taxi over for a buzzing marina and a plethora of bars and restaurants.Chris was so helpful with any questions we had - he kindly arranged local food delivered into us one night. No hassle and delicious, very worth while doing. We went to Epidavros one day - a must-see miracle of ancient architecture and culture. But back at the house. A good book, a glass of wine, think your thoughts whilst looking at that glorious view. Villa Artemis - I think it's the complete package, thank you so much for having us.
The property was exactly what we hoped for. Clean, spacious, great location, fantastic views and much more. Christopher's directions from Athens airport were spot-on. His recommendations on where to dine and shop were very good. We quickly made friends with Tassos - a local store and restaurant owner. Had a fantastic final-night dinner at his beach-side bar.
We were 4x couples and did a lot of cycling and exploring in the surrounding area - plenty to see and do. However, it was very nice to return to this house every day.
The only little weird thing for for us was the hand-showers in all the bathrooms, but I guess it is the way it works over there.
Overall, I think it was very good value. Did I mention the views...

Willem thank you for your generous words. I am very glad you enjoyed your stay. And apologies for being a little late (!) in replying. To be honest I hadn't even thought about the showers - you are right, it's a Greek thing! But I will fix it...

so you want to go to "real greece" well here it is
A village of 60 people,a beach that,s empty except in rush hour when the shepherd, his sheep and a couple of locals come to take the evening air.The house is huge bright and easy to be in.[dora does a full clean every week.] A vertiginous path joins the house to the sea.People with gammy legs ,dicky hearts or of an idle persuasion will need to drive down via the village. There,s a short drive to the shop that sells everything and a short walk to a beach bar in the next bay.Am i describing heaven?Did i mention safe snorkelling, the pool at the house, swallows and, sunsets?.The journey from Athens is easy driving.[2.5hrs]dont be alarmed by the final track to the villa.its worth it. It,s our great pleasure to review[and so remember] this brilliant place.
Great holidays in a comfortable villa with a stunning view
We were a group of 12, made up of three families with teenage and grown-up kids, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed our 12-day stay at Villa Artemis. It is ideally located in a secluded area on a hill, with a path leading directly down to a pebbly beach (we got so used to having the beach to ourselves that we were almost shocked to find three other people there on the last day!). The sea is full of life, which is fun to watch while swimming — we even “befriended” a sea turtle that we greeted every morning (it didn’t seem to mind). The villa and the surrounding garden are spacious, with more than enough room for everyone to spread out and never feel cramped. The air conditioning in the bedrooms is a blessing, as it got quite hot on most days and didn’t cool down much at night. The kitchen is very well equipped — you can easily cook for a large group if you prefer, but there is also a wide choice of tavernas in Methana or Poros/Galatas, all within about a 20-minute drive. The view over the bay is absolutely stunning at any time of day, but especially so at dawn and sunset. And finally, a special thank you goes to the host, Christopher, who truly cares about making your stay as smooth as possible and is always happy to help with advice or come to the rescue if needed (we had a power cut on our first evening and couldn’t figure out whether it affected only the house or the whole neighborhood — it turned out to be the latter and was quickly resolved).
Villa Artimis is simply beautiful. Our family group of 7 adults and an 18 month year old all loved the holiday. We stayed 8 nights. We all swam in the lovely bay every day which is a few minutes walk down through the grounds. It has steps and is steep in places so no good for those with bad knees but it is not far. We hardly saw anyone else on the beach which is pebbles (my favourite) with loads of shade and with great swimming and fish to see (there are snorkels at the villa). We used the infinity pool every day too and loved the view from eating out area. The pictures do not do it justice. The outside dining area is well shaded and looks out to sea and yes the sun does set in the perfect place. The main room is stunning and the kitchen well equipped. The two main bedrooms upstairs have balconies looking out to the bay and all the beds were comfortable. The three upstairs double bedrooms have good wardrobe space and are all ensuite. The bunk bed room is small but beds full size. We didn’t use that room as our son and family used the basement floor. This is also well appointed with a large living area but being basement smaller windows and no great views. Bathroom good. Christofer was very helpful and he arranged for two lovely meals to be cooked for us to warm up by the gardener’s sister. Perfect. We went at a great time of year for sightseeing, swimming and flora and fauna.
An amazing house in the best location with views that you won’t believe. Christopher was quick to respond and very helpful with all aspects of our stay. We’ll definitely be back!
We five couples had a fantastic time at the Villa
The house is very spacious and well equipped with beautiful views
The infinity pool was wonderful and there is a great covered outside space for barbecuing, eating and relaxing
There is a good shop and beach bar quite close run by Tasos and a couple of supermarkets within easy reach
The area is very unspoilt and there are lots of lovely places to visit and restaurants in the vicinity
Chris was very informative and extremely helpful during our visit
We can highly recommend it
Fabulous property exceeded expectations in every way
Beautifully positioned in private grounds and with the most spectacular views over the sea from property, pool and gardens. The house was light, spacious and well provisioned - comfortable without being pretentious. It was well positioned to stay local and low key but with easy access to livelier places eg Poros. Access is via a steep and stony drive so bring a suitable car. The owner gave fabulous directions and information and couldn't do enough for us.
The setting of this house is fabulous. The views are wonderful and make you happy. The pool is a great relief during hot days. Near by is a beach with sunbeds and a taverna. Tassos store/cafe is a treasure. He made dinner for us every night. We would pick it up at 6:00 and take it back to the house. There is no ac which can be a problem. Also the driveway is not for the faint of heart. The thought of going up and down at night was off putting, thus having Tassos cook. Near by are wonderful sites to see, Poros, Naphilion. Hydra, Edidavros, Mycenaean ruins, Vathi, Galatas etc. Everyone we ment were lovely and very helpful. Great vacation

Molly thank you for your review. I have spent quite a lot of money this year fixing the road, and hope to have it completely finished soon - Covid restrictions and a lack of guests being a problem. The A/C is something we decided on a long time ago, more for ecological reasons, but if the climate keeps warming we may have to change our minds :(
We had a fabulous holiday in a wonderful house. I think we may have been early visitors as the path down to the beach was well hidden but worth the scramble. The beach was beautiful although we spent a lot of time picking up washed up plastic - a real problem and so sad as we are the culprits.......
Much time was spent in the beach bar in the next bay - lovely, welcoming, quiet.
It's a truly special place with so much to see (epidavros is a must) and do. We went to a gorgeous restaurant a couple of times in Vathi - on the beach rather than in the harbour, blue and white with a pier into the sea - sorry can't remember the name -great food and so helpful. Had delicious food delivered to the door as well, so all in all what's not to like?
Thank you Christopher for a memorable stay.

Mel, I'm so sorry I've neglected to respond to reviews. I'm now putting that right. Thank you for your kind words. I spent lockdown at the villa and have completely rebuilt the path to the beach. The other good news is that maybe because of no shipping etc. the beaches are now very clean...
Very best,

For a family group of 6 adults and 4 young children Villa Artemis was outstanding. We had complete privacy and quiet; the pool was perfect; there was room for all us; and all the adults appreciate the many outside areas to sit and relax in.
In addition to the Villa being just what we wanted, the owner, Christopher, was more than normally communicative and helpful. Definitively a five star place and owner.

A lovely position with wide open views in an unspoilt area
We loved the position of the comfortable house. We never tired of the wide open views of the sea, the sky and the mountains, or of swimming in the warm, calm sea from the deserted beach below. We ate every meal outside. The area is very unspoilt, and the Methana Peninsula has a wild quality to it. As well as swimming we enjoyed visiting nearby ancient sites, walking, shopping in Galatas and Poros and eating fish in the local tavernas. The owner could not have been more helpful and the home-cooked Greek food, delivered to the door, was delicious.

lovely place!
we were 2 couples and 3 young adults.we had a grate week ! the house was big enough , the view is unbelievable, the sea shore is very near by (4 minuets walk) ,the swimming pool is beautiful, and the location is perfect- we enjoyed Poros 15 min drive, Methana - 20, Epidavros 30 and more.
all of us stayed in the big house we did not use the lower independent unit. (which is less attractive by means of view and ambiance).
disadvantages:
very week and unstable INTERNET service
few things in the house could use some maintenance .
Christopher was very available responsive and helpfull.

Stunning views and deserted beach
The most defining feature of this lovely house is the extraordinary views over Saronic Gulf. You can watch the sunset from the terrace or bedroom balconies, (glass of wine optional) and at night even spot the lights of the Epidavros ancient theatre across the bay. House very spacious - teens were put in the downstairs section.
The trip from the airport itself was straightforward apart from the last turn to Metamorfosi which is easy to miss in the dark, and the drive itself is pretty steep and rocky, fine once you're used to it, but make sure you rent cars with reasonable clearance - we made all the passengers get out at the top of the hill.
We loved the walk down to the beach through the gardens of olive and lemon trees and are sure that the climb back up did us good! Pool fab as it is cool after the climb back up from the beach and large enough to swim in. The beach itself has crystal clear water, fairly shallow right out to a reef where we all snorkelled, beyond which there was deeper sea so perfect for children and the more adventurous swimmers. Amazingly there was hardly anyone on the beach even in mid August - apart from the odd fisherman, so it felt like our own private beach.
The beach taverna - good for local beer, ice-cream and nibbles - is a short walk just the next bay around, apart from this you have to drive to shops and restaurants. Local shop is about a 10 minute drive away - was very friendly with great feta and the basics.
Galatas and pretty Poros are a short drive away with a good supermarket and excellent butcher and lots of tavernas. We also visited Vathi for fish tavernas and the fantastic views from the volcano (definitely worth the walk), Epidavros, Napflio, Mycenae, the island of Hydra (a must do) and even ancient Corinth on way back to airport, an easy diversion.

About the host
Hosted by Christopher Humphrys
I have been in Greece since 1992. I came with a suitcase in one hand and a cello in the other. Some years later I met my wonderful Greek wife and decided to stay. We have two children. This is a magical country and I hope that it can overcome the many hardships it faces.
Why they chose this property
If you want costa del.. don't apply. This is a part of Greece that even many of my Greek friends don't know well, despite it being only two hours from Athens. Methana is truly the Land That Time Forgot. A journey back to the past, whether in terms of flaura, fauna or food. It is just fabulous for the discerning Greekophile. Most of our guests in the past years have ended up being my friends. As it should be. This is a villa for people who already love Greece.
