"Once upon a time...." in Scicli, is our Grandma's house. Luigi, my husband and I, renovated it using typical and traditional materials, with an eye to environmental protection. Now "C'era una volta" is a comfortable holiday home, ideal for couples or families, equipped with all modern comforts. Furnished with care and love, it can comfortably accommodate up to 4 people. Arranged on three levels, it welcomes you in a living area with dining area and relax area, kitchenette, double bedroom, two bathrooms and a large panoramic roof top terrace.

Shop and facilities are easily reachable on foot. The house is located in a very quiet, safe and well-kept part in the center of ​​Scicli, behind the imposing Baroque church of San Bartolomeo. The sea is about a 5-minute drive away. The coast is mainly sandy, interrupted here and there by suggestive cliffs. "C'era una volta" can be the ideal starting point to go up to Mount Etna or Agrigento on a the daytrip and visit the Baroque of Val di Noto with tranquility.

We deeply love this region and we'll be on your side with tips on what to visit, what to eat and drink and what you should deifinitely enjoy once here on holiday.

Wonderful stay in Scicli

We had a wonderful weeks stay in Scicli. The house was perfect with everything we needed and Scicli itself was beautiful. Francesca was a fantastic host, friendly, helpful and incredibly knowledgable on Scicli and the surrounding area. We throughly enjoyed our week and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to others.

Scicli joy

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Piedegrotta. The lovely house was well located in a beautiful and atmospheric old neighbourhood and walking distance to the sights and tastes of Scicli. The house was well equipped, the bed comfortable, and the roof top terrace was an added joy. Francesca was a wonderful host. She welcomed us, gave us a great overview of the town's history, advised us on places to but food, enjoy a range of dining, and was responsive to our needs. She couldn't be nicer. A perfect little escape

My sister and I stayed in the Via Tivoli house for a week at the end of May and really felt that we had been blessed with finding the perfect little house for our needs. We like to stay in places which give a feel for the local life and we certainly achieved that. Francesca was exceedingly helpful both with information before we booked our holiday and then by buying some basic provisions (we were arriving on a Sunday) and meeting at the bus terminal in Modica. She gave us some interesting insights into local life and politics. As we were not a 'couple', we wanted separate sleeping areas and Francesca accommodated our needs by putting a second bed downstairs in place of the sofa. The weather was perfect - mid twenties centigrade and upwards which was a relief after months of relentless wetness at home in Wales, UK. We decided not to hire a car (in spite of being urged to do so by various tourist advisers!) and we really enjoyed using the buses and the train which, with a bit of careful planning got us everywhere we wanted to go. It also had the benefit of being more relaxing and meant that we rubbed shoulders with local people, trying out our embryonic Italian! The restaurants we were directed to by Francesca were great and we had some really good Sicilian food. Our stay also coincided with the festival of Madonna delle Millizie which gave us further enjoyable insight into local customs. The house is easy walking distance from the main square, the shops and all the touristy things you may want to see in Scicli. I would recommend a visit to Don Carmelo's restored cave dwelling which was inhabited by his grandfather. And of course there is lots of interest in the local and neighbouring areas for Inspector Montelbano fans!! I look forward to a return visit to Scicli at some point in the future.

What a wonderful stay we had in Scicli with our host Francesca making it extra special. The place had everything we needed for our 6-night stay. It was clean, comfortable and close to all markets and the historic center. We used the location to tour the other Baroque Cities, Ispica, and the beach village of Sampieri. Francesca suggested we use the local car rental, Jolly Motors, to rent a car for three days. I highly recommend their friendly service. They came and picked us up and brought us back to the apartment after we turned in the car. On the last night of our stay Francesca arranged for us to have a tour of the historic Santorio of Santa Maria Nova given by a group of local teens and the musical composer who restored the church’s rare, Orchestral Organ built in 1776. His musical performance demonstrated the organ’s massive range of orchestral sound. Great overall accomodation.

Bellissimo luogo ma rumoroso ; très beau lieu mais bruyant

Senza dubbio, il luogo e la città sono un paradiso per un ancoraggio siciliano. La città stessa offre uno scorcio di Sicilia barocca. La casa, situata nelle strette vie di un quartiere vicino al centro, permette di entrare in contatto e di chiacchierare con i vicini molto cordiali, una piccola comunità che vive all'aperto quando il sole non splende troppo. Siamo stati sfortunati, però, perché al nostro arrivo l'aria condizionata era rotta. La casa, con il suo tetto piatto, è diventata rapidamente un forno durante il giorno e ha sprigionato tutto il suo calore di notte. L'unica opzione per dormire era il ventilatore, che agitava un po' d'aria con le finestre aperte. Tuttavia, dopo che la strada si è addormentata intorno all'una di notte, sono stati i cani presenti nelle vicinanze a regalarci diversi concerti. Ma il clou dello spettacolo inizia alle 5.23, quasi tutte le mattine, con la musica elettro-pop che rimbomba nella casa cubica con le persiane verdi dall'altra parte della strada. Nei ritornelli è accompagnato da una donna urlante, che poi scopriamo essere la figlia gravemente disabile. Abbiamo catturato un video dell'evento che senza dubbio ci farà ridere tra qualche anno. Detto questo, la Sicilia è magnifica, l'appartamento superbo, la città di Scicli eccezionale, Francesca accogliente, che cerca di fare del suo meglio, ma torniamo esausti dopo brevi notti dall'1 alle 5.23 interrotte dai cani.

C'era una volta- märchenhaft schöner Urlaub

Wir sind mit vielen wundervollen Erinnerungen aus unserem Urlaub in Scicli zurückgekehrt. Diese Region mit den prachtvollen Städten, den tollen Sandstränden, der typischen Landschaft mit viel mediterranem Flair und all den sizilianischen Köstlichkeiten, hat uns eine Urlaubszeit mit einer perfekten Mischung aus Kultur, Genuss und einfach nur Entspannung ermöglicht. In ganz besonderer Erinnerung bleiben, wird uns unser "Zuhause" für diese zwei Wochen. C'era una volta - das Häuschen hätte keinen besseren Namen bekommen können. In einer kleinen Gasse gelegen, mitten unter all den freundlichen Nachbarn, so liebevoll ausgestattet aber doch so schlicht und ursprünglich restauriert. Unser absolutes Highlight waren unsere gemütlichen Stunden auf der Dachterrasse, mit Blick auf die umliegenden Berge mit Kirchen und einem Kloster, auf die Höhlenwohnungen und einfach nur über die Dächer dieses alten Stadtteils. Herrlich! Die Besitzer haben uns sehr herzlich empfangen und uns mit vielen Tipps versorgt. Danke Francesca und Luigi für eure so überaus freundschaftliche und hilfsbereite Art und die wunderbare Zeit bei euch!

Schöne Ferienwohnung in toller Kulisse

Die Wohnung war sehr sauber und für 4 Personen gut ausgestattet (Schirme, Strandstühle usw.) Auch die kleine Herausforderung „Parken“ war mit Francesca‘s Hilfe kein Problem. Auch bei allen anderen Dingen hilft sie gern und ist erreichbar. Wir haben uns sehr wohl und willkommen gefühlt. Die Wohnung liegt in einer Wohngegend, abseits der Tourismus-Ströme - das Zentrum ist aber fußläufig in nicht mal 5 Minuten zu erreichen. Wer gerne mit offenem Fenster schläft muss leider damit rechnen von Hundebellen aus der entfernten Nachbarschaft geweckt zu werden. Da es eine Klimaanlage gibt kann man die Fenster aber auch geschlossen halten und die wunderbare Dachterasse gleicht auch das wieder aus :)

Ein wunderbarer Ort mit viel Charme

Wir wurden von Francesca sehr herzlich empfangen und fühlten und sofort wohl. Sie gab uns viele wertvolle Tipps und wir konnten sie auch während dem Aufenthalt um Infos bitten. Der Hausteil ist eingebettet mitten im italienischen Leben am Stadtrand von der reizvollen Stadt Scicli. Die Wohnung ist liebevoll und praktisch eingerichtet. Die Räume sind mit viel Geschmack und Liebe zum Detail gestaltet. Die Terrasse ist ein Schmuckstück und wir genossen es dort zu essen oder einfach zu sein. Danke Francesca für die liebe Gastfreundschaft und die guten Gespräche. Wir kommen sehr gerne wieder.

- Sehr aufmerksame Gastgeberin (Francesca): viele Informationen über Scicli und die Umgebung, inklusive eines Besuches des ehemaligen Klosters Santa Maria della Croce; sogar Einladung zum Abendessen zu Hause bei ihrer Familie am ersten Abend: vielen Dank dafür! - Haus: renovierter Altbau, teils mit Natursteinwänden, in der Altstadt, mit einer sehr schönen Dachterrasse - Einbauküche ist vorhanden (Induktionskochfeld, Kühlschrank, kleiner separater Ofen; Waschmaschine) - Haus selbst ist sehr kühl bei einer Außentemperatur 12-15 Grad, sonnig / wolkig / windig) - Vorsicht: sämtlicher Stromverbrauch muß extra nach Verbrauch bezahlt werden - Heizstrahler, Klimaanlage (kann kühlen und heizen), Warmwasser (Boiler): auf diese Extrakosten wird in der Fewo-Direkt-Beschreibung NICHT hingewiesen!! - dies habe ich erst vor Ort erfahren. Da ich hinsichtlich des Stromverbrauches sehr vorsichtig war, wurde mir nichts in Rechnung gestellt. - kein WLAN vorhanden (bereits vor Abreise auf Nachfrage erfahren). - Mobilfunkempfang im ersten Stock und auf der Dachterrasse gut. - Fernseher im Erdgeschoß ist klein; Empfang von einigen italienischen Sendern, BBC World Service und zeitweise ZDF. - Matratze des Doppelbettes ist eher fest, aber gleichmäßig. - Zufahrt zu den Parkmöglichkeiten in der Nähe des Hauses sehr schmal - für einen Fiat 500 gerade ausreichend. Ein sehr kleiner Wendehammer (die Zufahrtstraße hört im Tal auf), ist vorhanden, aber meistens mit mindestens einem Auto zugeparkt.

Wunderschönes Ferienhaus in der Altstadt von Scicli!

Das Ferienhaus ist sehr gemütlich ausgestattet und versprüht jede Menge italienischen Charme. Die Dachterrasse war sowohl für ein Frühstück in der Sonne als auch für ein Wein am Abend das Highlight mit einem tollen Ausblick auf die Altstadt! Wir haben uns dort sehr wohl gefühlt und man hatte alles, was man braucht. Francesca gab uns gute Tipps für sehenswerte Orte in der Nähe und man konnte sie bei Problemen jeder Art jederzeit erreichen. Also alles in allem ein tolles Ferienhaus mit einer tollen Vermieterin :-) wir würden es jedem empfehlen.

Ottima accoglienza ma...

Accoglienza ottima, molta cordialità e disponibilità. La casa è carina ma - anche a causa della posizione nel mezzo di una gola - risulta piuttosto calda. Climatizzatori a disposizione ma mettete in conto spese piuttosto alte per il consumo elettrico (praticamente il massimo in Italia a kWh con incluse ANCHE le spese fisse...in 5 gg senza accendere nulla, nemmeno scaldabagno e piastre della cucina, se ne sono andati svariati € aggiuntivi - spiegatevi bene prima con i padroni) oppure rischierete di dormire piuttosto poco: purtroppo la notte a finestre aperte le luci esterne e i cani del vicinato non aiutano. Cucina con piastre elettriche un po' limitante. Posizione ottima a due passi dal barocco siciliano, e terrazza piacevole con vista sulla storia.

Authentische, vollständig und liebevoll ausgestattete Fewo

Wir haben selten eine gleichzeitig authentischere und liebevoller ausgestattete Fewo angemietet. Alles ist in einem sehr guten Zustand: von der Küchenzeile und den Koch- und Essensutensilien bis zu den Strandstühlen und dem Sonnenschirm. Die Wohnung befindet sich keine 5 Minuten von allen Läden und Restaurants in Scicli, mitten unter den Einheimischen. Man ist von der ersten Minute an in der sizilianischen Lebensart angekommen. Die Terrasse war für uns der ideale Platz, um den Tag abzuschließen. Scilci selbst ist eine lebhafte und liebenswerte Stadt mit vielfältigen Möglichkeiten zum Einkaufen, Besichtigen oder zum Essen gehen. Scicli ist ein sehr guter Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge in die Barockstädte in der Umgebung. Auch für einen Tagesbesuch nach Siracusa (mit der Bahn). Zum Strand in Sampieri sind es mit dem Auto ca. 20 Minuten. Francesca hat uns sehr freundlich empfangen, hat eine dicke Mappe mit Informationen zu Sehenswürdigkeiten, Restaurants etc. vorbereitet und steht jederzeit für Rückfragen oder Hilfe zur Verfügung. Wir hatten einen sehr schönen Urlaub in Francescas Haus!

Pleasant apartment in a quaint section of Scicli. Walking distance to everything you need or desire. Francesca and Luigi welcomed us as family and became our friends. We enjoyed our stay in this baroque town rich in culture and warm people. We made friends with the butcher, the pastry chef and the supermarket owners. Recommend this property and town highly for people looking to live like locals.

Our fourth visit to C'era una Volta, and probably not the last! We just feel so at home in this beautiful traditional Sicilian house tucked away in one of the older parts of Scicli. with friendly neighbours and a view across to the caves. Everything is exactly as it says on the web site. The house is always immaculate. and homely. it's uniqueness sets it apart from other holiday homes. Other years we have always eaten out in the evening. however this year, my wife had a swollen knee so I did the shopping and cooked. It was simple fare, but the local supermarket - Deco - and the butcher just down towards Piazza Italia are really helpful, have wonderful fresh produce and really good prices. Everyone is so helpful, and someone even brought round some home made massage oil for Cath's knee. Once she was more mobile we went to Donnalucata by bus. We enjoyed lunch at Mezzaparola and a stroll along the sea front in the sunshine. We wanted to venture further afield than we could manage on the bus, and we booked a day trip, by taxi, with Elios in Piazza Italia. We chose to go to Piazza Armerina. We went along the coast toward Gela and then up to the Roman Villa, about a 2 hour drive. Amazing and well worth a visit. Afterward, the three of us went for lunch and then he took us on a scenic route back to Scicli. The driver was brilliant and by the end of the day, I think my poor Italian was a bit better and he had learnt some more English! We ate out on the last two nights, firstly at Quore Matto ( not impressed) and then at Baqqala which was very good. We also went to Millenium for coffee, cakes and Internet. There are a couple of small bars just past San Bartolomeo church which serve excellent coffee and pastries at an extremely cheap price. I revisited "a rutti ri Ron Carmelu" the museum depicting life in the caves, it is very good. It was sad to say good bye on the Saturday, and used EliosTaxis again to go to Catania. Francesca really makes the stay at Piedagrotta something special. We will be back, hopefully at an earlier time in the year, to see one the amazing festivals that take place.

Cera una volta is a delightful, well appointed property with all home comforts and a roof terrace.

Francesca is a very attentive and well organised hostess. Her friendly approach made our whole experience of Sicily particularly enjoyable. The house is comfortable and spotlessly clean, only a few minutes walk from the town centre, which has a good selection of eateries, shops, baroque churches and 'Montalbano' locations. Francesca's local map is marked with all the places to visit, the numbers 2, 4 & 6 are the locations of cafes, restaurants and food shops and is part of a comprehensive folder of leaflets about local towns and attractions, available in several languages. Her offer to buy in shopping in advance and to organise car hire if we needed it was also most welcome, particularly as we arrived so late in the evening. An ideal 'home from home' for any couple wanting to visit SE Sicily! We managed to visit the Greek Temples at Agrigento, the seaside towns of Donnalucata and Sampieri, as well as Modica, Noto and Ragusa for their chocolate and baroque highlights and even all the way to Villa Romana del Casale to see the 'bikini girls'. The best meal we had was at Ristorante Majore in Chiaramonte Gulfi, an amazing, unpretentious little restaurant with wonderful service, surroundings and even more importantly great food! The people of the area were all so friendly and helpful they made it a wonderfully memorable holiday. Many thanks to all of you!

A great place to stay and enjoy Sicilian life

We stayed at the house at the end of a very busy trip to Sicily, and it was a great place to slow down and just enjoy life in Scicli. The house was well equipped and very comfortable. It had a great 'sun deck' at the top of the house, which was a wonderful place to go and enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day.

Charming house in a beautiful town.

C'era una Volta is an immaculate charming house in the beautiful town of Scicli. It is in a great location and has a lovely roof terrace with fabulous views. The owner Francesca speaks perfect English and is the most friendly and helpful host you could wish to meet. She arranged transfers to and from the airport for us and gave us local information. The neighbours and people of Scicli are very friendly. We had a lovely 11 days and highly recommend.

What makes this property unique

Via Piedigrotta, from the name of the street, as well as Via Tivoli ( https://www.homeaway.co.uk/p1973355) are two welcoming and charming holiday rentals in the center very close one to the other.
Both of them have been recently renovated maintaining the original stony walls, the wooden roof and the panoramique terrace overlooking the surrounding natural and historical landscape.
We tried to pay the maximum attention to all comfs to ensure a pleasant stay.
