More about our area: The Loess Hills represent a remarkable geographical feature that emerged from the grinding of materials in river valleys due to glacial movements during the ice ages. This region is one of the few in the world boasting such extensive deposits of loess soil, a fine silt-like sediment created by the accumulation of dust carried by the wind. This soil is crucial for agriculture as it fosters fertility and serves as a record of historical climate conditions.
The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway stretches for 200 miles, connecting Sioux City, IA, to St. Joseph, MO. Along this route, travelers can enjoy a diverse landscape filled with wildlife, agricultural fields, wooded hills, expansive grasslands, and a variety of prairie plants.
Just 4.5 miles away, Lewis and Clark State Park is situated at Blue Lake, a short drive from Onawa. This park is perfect for boating enthusiasts and those interested in history, featuring the only life-sized replica of Lewis and Clark’s keelboat, Discovery.
Preparation Canyon State Park, located 18 miles away in Moorhead, IA, spans 4,068 acres and includes a lake ideal for kayaking and public fishing. The Loess Hills Scenic Overlook, found on the northern edge of the park, offers one of the most stunning views in the area, showcasing the beauty of forests, prairies, the Missouri River bottomlands, and the Nebraska plains, making it a fantastic spot for picnicking.
There are more than 12,000 acres of public hunting land in the vicinity, providing some of the finest opportunities for whitetail and turkey hunting found anywhere in the Midwest.
Make sure to bring some food and beverages for your visit, but don't worry—there will be some bottled water and condiments available for you. If you need anything else, there's a grocery store, as well as, a Dollar General nearby.

Beautiful property. Was perfect for staying while we were visiting family. Nice quiet location which was perfect for relaxing after busy days. Will 100% book again when we are in the area.
This property is a gem! The kitchen is fully stocked for cooking. The king sized bed on the main floor is “seriously comfortable.” The owners are extremely accommodating, checking in/out was easy. It was great to have so many amenities provided.
The house was perfect for our family of 4. We especially liked the back patio for our morning coffee and afternoon happy hour. All the amenities were just perfect.
Comfortable quiet bungalow with all amenities we needed.
Went to the Loess Hills Lavender Festival & was a relaxing place to stay. Onawa has cute shops to explore & close to drive around the Loess Hills. Host communicated promptly & satisfactorily with a question we had. Spacious kitchen & patio a plus.
We spent a day exploring the Loess Hills, Preparation Canyon State Park, Sophie’s Hollow. Brickhouse bar/restaurant was fabulous. We visited Sunshine Foods, Jordan’s Sportscards. Got a good nights rest and then Easter service at church and family dinner & birthday party! Great location. Nicely done and very comfortable home! Hope to stay again!
Wonderful cottage to stay. Very clean and comfortable. It fit our needs perfectly to explore Onawa. We also have dietary restrictions so having a kitchen was so helpful. The host answered any questions that we had before booking and stayed in touch throughout for anything that we needed. Check in and check out was seamless. The only very minor suggestion I would have would be to add some foldable luggage racks for the bedrooms. Not a big deal though so I never even mentioned it to the host. We hope to return again sometime in the future to continue our family history exploration. Would definitely stay here again.
