About this property
Super-Comfortable House on Super-Clean Sunset Lake
Our house sits on a half-acre lot located on a quiet street that rings 65-acre Sunset Lake. At 55 feet, this NO-WAKE lake is one of the deepest in Portage County, and the water quality is excellent. (Note that our Sunset Lake is not the lake with the same name located in the Chain of Lakes. However, from our house it's only a half-hour drive to the Chain of Lakes.)
The split-level, 1,900 sq-ft house is cozy and comfortable. A primary bedroom, smaller bedroom, and a bathroom are located on the top level. (One room on this level is not available to guests.) A sitting area with a couch and foosball table, and a bedroom and bath are located on the lowest level. (The fireplace on the lowest level is not available for use.) On the main level are the dining area, living room, kitchen, and laundry room with washer and dryer. The kitchen is fully equipped, including stove/oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, cooking pots and utensils, and dishware. Bath towels and bed linens are supplied. There is an attached 2-car garage, central heating and central air, WiFi, Smart TV, and local and long-distance phone service.
From the dining area, step onto the large deck ready for outdoor cooking (propane-tank grill) and eating (deck set of table and benches). The deck looks onto a yard with mature trees that slopes down to 100 feet of lakefront. (The yard can be reached by going down stairs from the deck, or by walking on either side of the house.) An aluminum dock at shore level is in place from approximately April through October -- no stairs to climb to get onto the dock. Swim off the dock. You can get into the water from the shore (although the bottom isn't sandy) to the right of the dock. The shoreline to the left of the dock is in its natural state, as mandated by Portage County. There's good fishing, including walleye, panfish, bluegill, and trout. A fire pit is in the back yard. (Note that, per State regulations, due to oak wilt and pests, firewood from a source farther than 20 miles from our house can't be brought in. You can buy firewood from our manager at a reasonable price.)
SUMMER:
Enjoy swimming (either off our dock, or at the sandy beach at the county park across the lake located a few minutes' drive or 15-minute walk from our house), fishing, canoeing, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, and small-boat sailing on this no-wake lake.
LATE SPRING, SUMMER, AND FALL:
RIDE BIKES -- on the low-traffic roads in the area.
HIKE -- on trails in the area, including the Ice Age Trail, located at the New Hope Iola Ski Hill (about 5 miles from our house).
You can also ride bikes and hike on the extensive Green Trail system in Stevens Point, located about 18 minutes from our house; and on the 29-mile Tomorrow River Trail (trailheads located within 10 miles of our house; state pass required for bicycles).
WINTER:
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING-- The Iola Winter Sports Club (open to non-members) is located about 5 miles from our house.
SNOWMOBILES-- About one-half mile from our house is a trunk trail that leads to a major snowmobile trail going all the way to Green Bay. (Note that you have to trailer your snowmobile for that half-mile.)
SNOWSHOEING-- on the nearby Ice Age Trail and in other close locations.
ICE-FISHING-- on Sunset Lake.
(Winter accessibility: The house is on a township road that is plowed regularly, and the sidewalk and driveway are cleaned after any substantial snow.)
Please note that NO HUNTING IS PERMITTED ON OUR PROPERTY.
Many annual events are held in the area throughout the year--such as the Iola Car Show in July, the Energy Fair in June, the Iola Winter Carnival in February, the Waupaca Festival of the Arts in August, and the Hidden Studios Art Tour in October. The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MERA) holds workshops in the area.
Central Waters Brewing Company, located in nearby Amherst, brews a variety of great beers. Great gelato and pizza can be had at The Millstone in nearby Iola (seasonal offerings; please check their website). A list of many other places to eat and drink is found in the guest info folder.
No smoking allowed indoors.
No pets allowed. (We had to change our policy, due to problems with pets not being kept on a leash.)
